Tour de France '07 - History as it should've been
valverde321
Geez, these reports are very good!
I love the layout a lot, and your screens are great! The results are very accurate. Ahh back in to the days when a handful of guys could win a sprint stage....

Like others have said, I cant wait for the mountains!

@Ian Butler: No, not sports Smile
@valverde321: Thanks! I'm a bit of a hopeless nostalgic. Everything seemed to be better before Pfft At least one can't deny that the peloton has never LOOKED as good as in 2007. A lot of brilliant jerseys. A broad front of exciting favourites as well, who all felt like worthy contenders.

Btw, I can't wait for the mountains myself. Curious about how it will pan out.

What would a TdF be without a McEwen comeback victory?

Yeah, any reports on the internet? From your career as a journalist, I mean.

Stage 4 [IMG-r]https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/profil4.gif[/IMG-r]
Villers-Cotterêts - Joigny

193 km
Wednesday 11 July

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/tittel4.png

Today was another classic early Tour de France stage, run in the countryside to the east of Paris through the rolling hills of the Champagne region. A breakaway would certainly go away and battle with the chasing peloton, with the odds firmly on the peloton's side.[IMG-r]https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/boonen.jpg[/IMG-r]

Tom Boonen (Quickstep - Innergetic) was back in green last night, and today he had a chance of switching the green jersey with a yellow one. Having moved up into 3rd via bonus seconds, he was 14 seconds behind race leader Fabian Cancellara (Team CSC) this morning. With a stage win today, he would claim the Maillot Jaune.

The stage began in a high tempo yet again. A ten-man breakaway got clear for quite a few kilometres, but the peloton wasn't happy. For King of the Mountains leader Rubén Pérez, that was the best thing that could happen. The first two climbs of the day was won by Ag2r's Elmiger of the early breakaway, and when he was reeled in again, Pérez' polkadot jersey seemed safe for another day. The breakaway that was eventually let go was much smaller, containing Patxi Vila (Lampre) and Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis).

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-3.png
The two men on the move today. Chavanel did the lion's share of the work, while Vila was mostly just hanging on.

Today's profile was considerably more lumpy than anything we've had so far, despite containing only four 4th category climbs. The CSC-led peloton struggled to keep control of the two strong men out front. Chavanel was quite a dangerman, as he was 9th overall this morning, only 24 seconds behind the yellow jersey. The Frenchman also proved to be the strongest of the two escapees.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-6.png
Chavanel rides away from Patxi Vila.

After leaving Vila for dead, Chavanel continued to power on by himself. The gap never came down much, and as the Cofidis team leader was approaching the finish in Joigny, it hovered around three minutes. The Frenchman was heading for a magnificent stage victory, and was also riding into yellow!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-2.png
CSC is watching the yellow jersey vanish from Cancellara's shoulders.

Despite catching Patxi Vila (Lampre), and Crédit Agricole helping out with the chase in the final 20 kilometres, the peloton never managed to dig into Chavanel's lead. He crossed the finishing line in Joigny to bag a hugely popular victory!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-12.png
A perfect day for Sylvain Chavanel and the Cofidis team!

What a way to win your first stage at the Tour de France! Chavanel was ecstatic as he crossed the line, and who can blame him?

Erik Zabel (Milram) led the peloton home three minutes later. A resigned Fabian Cancellara had to wave goodbye to his yellow jersey, which he has kept for four days.

The 28-year-old Frenchman is the new man in yellow!

Spoiler
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-1.png
Martin Elmiger (Ag2r) securing the mountain points ahead of Staf Scheirlinckx (Cofidis) early in the stage.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-4.png
Patxi Vila (Lampre) doing a rare pull on the front in the breakaway.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-5.png
Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis) eventually found himself all alone with the open road ahead of him. The Frenchman was probably fine with that.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-7.png
Team CSC didn't have it today. They probably didn't put too much effort into the chase though, with one eye on the mountains to come.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-8.png
Tom Boonen (Quickstep - Innergetic) beats Robbie McEwen (Predictor - Lotto) for 3rd place in an intermediate sprint.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-9.png
Patxi Vila (Lampre) couldn't keep up with Chavanel, and was caught by the peloton.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-10.png
Thor Hushovd's Crédit Agricole team helped out with the chase. The Norwegian doesn't think the team jersey is green enough, and would like to change it for something greener.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-11.png
The French crowd willing Chavanel on as he reaches Joigny.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/4-14.png
Erik Zabel (Milram) leading the peloton home, with Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole) taking 3rd place.

Fabian Cancellara (Team CSC) has now lost his yellow jersey, which he has kept since London.

Alright, I'll just keep on enjoying your reports on TDF 2007, as it should've been Grin

The new reporting style looks amazing, Squire!

The only thing that I would work on are the stage profiles. They are a bit unclear. Other than that great reports, and, as always, amazing pictures and angles.

Realistic, as Chavanel usually attacks a lot on flat stages.

He is Smile even sitting 18 overall. Will be interesting to see how high he can get. Also looking forward to see how Rasmussen will do in the mountains or the overall.

Thanks!
I know about the profiles. The idea was to just give an impression of how the stage looked like, and you can still see the sprints and climbs. But I agree that it doesn't look very good. Perhaps I shouldn't resize them, and have a bigger profile come up when you click on them. Is there any way to force a picture to 250 pixels with BBcode?

In other news, the hilliest stage so far is coming up soon Cool

Great win for Chavanel, but one stage too early of his real life combativity award Pfft Looking forward for the hillier terrain Smile

I don't think so.. what you could do is upload the picture in small size and normal size, then use the url code so that when you click on the small one you're redirected to the normal profile.
