@janne_837
Thanks, great you're back.. I'm waiting for Dauphiné
February 27th: Giro di Sardegna
Stage 5: Sant’ Antioco - Cagliari, 139.0 kms
After yesterday’s failure on our goal, we’ll simply race the last stage. We aim to put a man in the break, and that’s all.
Today’s early break had 6 riders. Matías Médici between them.
The last survivor was reeled in with 7 km to go.
If you look in the stage profile, there’s a sprint check 5 km before the finish. Only one sprinter decided to go for it - Alessandro Petacchi. And with the acceleration we know he has, he opened a small gap to the peloton.
With the sprint starting, Petacchi was still alone in front.
The pack even reached him inside the last km, but all he had to do was get up the saddle for a few meters and celebrate an easy win.
Today winner is Stage Results

A good race for us? I don’t think so. Even though we knew that our single goal of getting the KOM jersey was very difficult, the situation as the race happened was very good for us, but we still couldn’t manage to secure the jersey. As we knew it would be difficult, though, we had very few expectations, so in the end that didn’t count a lot.
In this race we again saw winners that weren’t favorites. As for the favorites, bad performances. Cunego? 12th, + 7’35”. Nibali? 35th, + 11’47”! Rodriguez did ok, but only for a podium. I think I would prefer Gadret to have won. In fact those seconds Scarponi ‘magically’ got on the last km of stage 2 changed overall winner.
The riders will now go South-East to the region of Malaysia for the Tour of Langkawi. It should be an interesting race with 5 out of 7 stages being hilly. Unfortunately, we again won’t have a really good team =( With so much interesting stages, though, we should expect an exciting race. That’s all for now, tune back later!

I have to agree with you both, the fact is that as the race happened, situation became very comfortable for us.
And we've missed a lot of points that we should have gotten: 2 on stage 2, 4 on stage 3, 8 on stage 4's first check, we could have gotten something on the second check if Médici hadn't lost contact(he wasn't struggling - just bad dot micromanage through crazy slopes).. and then lost it all to a rider who started the stage with no points.
Indeed, it is a success, but in some points I was so confident we could do it(like big break with good gap on stage 4, that was crucial) that I wrote that a bit.. disappointed.
Oh, and I thought we would see a Seara/Vivo rider on the game podium for the first time, that also got me disappointed =P
A good month for us? It’s difficult to say. We don’t know yet if the next months will be much better, if the average of results will be better. I personally think it was a decent month. We took part in 4 races, getting 2 Top Tens in GCs. Our best results so far is a 2nd place, gotten by Daniel Rogelin. No other podium position. After that, our best result is 7th. A lot of it, in fact.
We couldn’t reach our first sponsor goal, but it’s okay as it was too much difficult. Pagliarini and Walker performed decent in the first two races. Magno Prado Nazaret did a good Giro della Calabria with a Top 10 after sprint bonus seconds. Médici also did good on the only ITT we faced. And Daniel Rogelin with outstanding performances for a rider of his level. Only thing was Médici missing the KoM jersey. Summing up, we had a good month.

In Malaysia, we’ll have our next race, Le Tour de Langkawi. It’s our 3rd race from our 4 last in Asia. But differently from Qatar and Oman, Le Tour de Langkawi offers a lot of climbing, so we can expect an exciting race. Since the first edition in 1996, the race has had 14 editions, with only one rider being able to win it once, Paolo Lanfranchi. In the last 2 years, an Androni-Giocattoli won it, José Serpa being the last.
As mentioned, we’ll have 7 far from easy stages. After the first two flat stages as a warm up, the riders will face 5 difficult hilly stages, 3 of them finish uphill. Add that to a 20 seconds bonus for the winners and we can have the battle for GC opened up until the last stage.
The GC Contenders
Probably the biggest card in Malaysia is Giovanni Visconti. Our deck in this race is very big, though, as usual in minor races. Jan Bakelandts is another bet, and brings with him a very strong team for Omega Pharma. We also have Ángel Vicioso, but his Andalucía squad has only 6 riders (max 8) so maybe that could make the difference. Astana brings a good leader in David Navarro, but no good team mates. The list goes over and over, including BMC’s Mauro Santambrogio, Johann Tschopp (Bouygues Télécom), Francesco Masciarelli (Acqua & Sapone) and David García Dapena (Xacobeo).
The Sprinters
Unsurprisingly, we have a low number of sprinters. ISD CT’s Alexandre Usov is one of them. Russell Downing, from Sky Cycling Team, is another. Skil - Shimano bring a good sprinter in Robert Wagner, but I don’t think he’ll have much left after all the hills in the 2 flat stages. Sacha Modolo, Manuel Belletti and Denis Flahaut can finish the small list.
Rio es Carnival/Seara/Vivo
Team Goals:
- KOM Jersey (Nazaret, other)
We again got a weak team. This time, though, we bring our 2nd best rider in hill, Magno Prado Nazaret (HIL 68). He’s got a horrible fitness, though (around 65), so maybe other rider will to try to apply for our goal. Without counting the stage finishes, only counting KOM sprints, 96 points is the maximum you can get. We’ll try to collect some of those and let’s see what happens.
@janne_837
Thanks! We'll have to count with a lucky rides to get the jersey =)
March 1st: Le Tour of Langkawi
Stage 1: Alor Setar - Kepala Batas, 230.0 kms
The biggest stage of the race is classified as a flat stage, but probably too difficult for pure sprinters with that hilly final. There are 2 KOM checks in it, and we intend to get it. It shouldn’t be a difficult stage up to the checks so we have a bigger chance to get them (btw March 1st is my birthday irl so I hope the riders consider that and make a little bigger effort )
Now this took a time to form the breakaway. After 100 km raced and a lot of failed attempts, 5 riders managed to break clear from the peloton. 2 from Seara/Vivo. Initially, they were separed in 2 groups, the first having 2 riders and the second 3 riders, including both Seara/Vivo.
Spoiler
BotD: E1 - Pierre Rolland, Albert Timmer; E2 - Krisztian Lovassy, Tiago Fiorilli, Magno Prado Nazaret.
We though that setting a high pace for a few moments and we would bridge the small gap of about 30”. We were wrong. The gap only grew, getting to 2 minutes after a while.
Shortly before we arrived on the first KoM sprint, Martin Hebik joined our group. We had a 3 minutes advantage to the peloton at the moment. Not only he joined us, but he attacked us on the last descent before the first mountain sprint.
Even though we raised the speed and even tried to attack, we never saw him anymore. So there goes all the points we could take. Fortunately it’s not much comparing to the other stages.
Between the 2 KoM sprints, the peloton got us 3.
The last survivors were caught with 10 km left. Masssprint!
Under the red kite, Modolo is leading.
And he takes it! Yukiya Arashiro 2nd, Jimmy Engoulvent 3rd.

Not a good stage as we weren't able to get any KOM points. We'll just keep trying and hope for better luck in next days.
March 2nd: Le Tour of Langkawi
Stage 2: Butter Worth - Siliawan, 174.0 kms
Our second stage is also classified as a flat, but flat sections is probably what you won’t see. After a lot of hills, the riders will enter a final circuit where they will face for two times a 1 km long hill with an average about 10%, including the final sprint. As they pass the hill for the first time there’ll be a mountain check giving 6 points. We won’t go for KOM sprints today as there are too few of them. We’ll try to go for the break just for the chance of a good stage result.
A break of 9 riders was formed today. As they reached the hill for the first time, the pack had almost caught them, and that happened shortly after.
When the sprint was about to start, Giuseppe Palumbo was giving a great lead out to Ángel Vicioso(they are not team mates). They had a small gap to the others.
Palumbo was a horrible sprinter though and by the time they reached the hill, the others had already passed Vicioso. He was very fresh for the hill, though.
500 m to go: Vicioso leading, Visconti second, Vogondy third, yellow jersey Modolo fourth.
Vogondy passes Visconti for second, but no one is able to take the win from Ángel Vicioso, who raises his arms in the air in celebration!

March 3rd: Le Tour de Langkawi
Stage 3: Siliawan - Banting, 160.6 kms
Today is the first hilly-classified stage. Like in other stages, the riders will face some interesting hills. The main climb of the day is 17 km long. A selected peloton is expected to arrive, where then they will enter a small circuit and climb the same hill two times, with the finish awaiting them after the second climb. The riders will pass on 2 mountain checks, the first worth 16 points and teh second, 6 points.
After 40 km raced, 5 riders managed to break from the peloton, including two from Seara/Vivo: Arseno and Fiorilli.
Spoiler
BotD: Luca Pierfelici, Oleksandr Sheydyk, Tiago Fiorilli, Jay Thomson, Alex Arseno.
With more 30 km, Pierfelici and Thomson attacked. Fiorilli went with them. When the biggest climb of the day started, they had a 1’36” gap to the second group, who had 1’49” to the peloton.
We didn’t expect Fiorilli to keep with them until the KOM sprint, and, as waited, he had to leave them towards the middle of the climb.
The peloton filled of blue helmets and jerseys in front had already caught the other two, and were two minutes down on Fiorilli. We were trying to keep them away and still save 10 points.
Gap between Fiorilli - Peloton was decreasing slowly, and at that moment it really looked like Fiorilli would save 3rd on the KOM check. Then, Javier Moreno attacked. Possoni and Vanendert followed him.
Quickly Moreno reached and dropped Fiorilli. Possoni and Vanendert also did that a bit later.
On the peloton, 1 km from the summit, Vicioso attacked. Lefèvre, García Dapena and Daniel Moreno went with him.
The earlier attackers caught the other 2 escapees, and they started descending together.
A peloton driven by Colnago - CSF and Bbox Télécom caught Vicioso & co. and Fiorilli on the descent. Gap to the leaders was still 2’20” though.
When the front group started climbing again, Moreno and the other two attackers dropped the last 2 break survivors.
They finished the hill for the first time with a 1’22” advantage to the peloton, that was now shortened to only 45 riders.
When climbing the hill for the second time, the peloton was about to catch the 3 leaders when Daniel Navarro launched a powerful attack. Jérôme Coppel and Cyril Gautier countered the move. Would this be the winning move?
No. The peloton came in really fast, and heading to the last 2 kilometers, was in the lead again.
In the start of the sprint Navarro was leading - does he still have something after trying to go solo?
Yes, he does! And he wins it quite easily! He is the new yellow jersey!

Just when I thought we could get 10 points in the KOM check those guys attacked from the peloton and pass us. Not only our riders aren't good but now we also count with bad luck =P

True, ha xD
@baia
Yeah, "If you can achieve something without a struggle it's not going to be satisfying" - Greg LeMond - okay I'm not struggling to get the KOM jersey but it's being hard to do it
March 4th: Le Tour de Langkawi
Stage 4: Port Dickson - Bahut Pahat, 149.3 kms
The 4th stage of the race offers the second uphill finish off the race, probably the toughest of all 3. After a quite easy beginning, the riders will face some serious climbings, including a 7-km long towards the end of the stage that is very steep, getting up to 13%. The riders will get some air while descending to finally climb up to the city of Bahut Pahat.
A big break was formed today. 13 riders successfully escaped from the peloton in the early part of the stage. Two riders of Seara/Vivo managed to enter it, Tiago Fiorilli and Alex Arseno. Fiorilli, our KOM leader, was feeling awesome today (+5) and had the best fitness in the team (92). Maybe today could be his day? 22 points possible to get.
In the foot of the first KOM climb, they had a 5 minute advantage to the pack. When entering the last km before the KOM sprint, Fiorilli tried to take the lead of the group.
And he gets it, 6 points for him!
In the peloton, Astana is doing most of the work. Maybe their leader Navarro is feeling great today after yesterday’s victory?
Back to the front, the climb begin for the escapees. We knew that there were about 4 guys better than Fiorilli in hill stat, but we would be satisfied if able to get about 8 points.
About 3 minutes later came the pack. The advantage was good for a 7-km climb, but Astana had sent all their work horses to the front… things weren’t looking so good now.
In the break, Levarlet, Cioni and Santambrogio got rid of the others. It was still looking good for us, if we get 4th in the KOM check we would still get 8 points.
The peloton was coming fast, though, and with 3 kilometers left of climbing gap was down to 1’41”.
Fiorilli still tried to not be caught, but the inevitable contact occurred with 1.7 km left. Gap to leaders was now almost 2 minutes.
A peloton of 26 riders caught the remaining escapees in the descent.
The first kilometers of climbing were a bit easy, with 2 slight descents. After 4 to go, though, things would get only up and steep.
When we reached the 5 km mark, Daniel Navarro was in the front making the pace with Jufré protecting him from the wind. Yellow jersey Vicioso was glued on his wheel.
They continue to ride marking each other.
And there’s move that had to happen, with 2.8 kilometers left, Navarro is out of the saddle and powering away from the group! “Vicioso is done nothing about it, he saw the speed and the acceleration of Navarro!”
Jérôme Coppel is able to follow Navarro, and they opened a good gap in no time!
In the sprint for the victory, Navarro dropped Coppel several times.
In the end, they both get with the same time, but that doesn’t matter to Navarro! When he raises his hands to celebrate his 2nd consecutive stage win, he is almost 2 minutes in front of Vicioso!
Ángel Vicioso comes home 8th, 1’48” behind stage winner Navarro. That’s probably the last we’ll see of him in yellow in Malaysia.

Up to now Navarro is confirming why he was a favorite, winning 2 out of 2 hilly stages. Up to now he probably didn't miss a good team mate with him. He has more than a minute gap to the 2nd in GC and with his current form and his performances it doesn't look like it will be a trouble for him to defend the yellow jersey. Now, about our interest, we again count with bad luck. We should have got more out of today, Fiorilli waws +5! At least his fitness is increasing. If the peloton today didn't up the pace going to the second KOM climb, we would probably get 8 more points. We could be with something about 18 points, but we are only with 10. We're not out of the competition, it's just a lot difficult now.
