Great win! A for you and another for Timmer!
I suppose that in 11th stage the finish was slightly uphill wasn´t it? Otherwise I can´t imagine Vaitkus winning a mass sprint in a flat finish.

You should try to sign a good climber for next season!

@ all: Thanks for the comments.
@ cuxu: Yup, the finish was uphill, but very slightly.
@ fcancellara: I've planned to put up a list of riders without contracts for the next season, so that you readers can advice who I should sign. Do you think that sounds like a good idea?
14.07.2011: Tour de France
Stage 12
Cugnaux - Luz Ardiden
After thirteen day's of this Tour, we've finally reached the first serious mountain stage. The three topped monster will give us a first real sign of how the favourites' form are, and we will also see a lot of French riders in the breakaway today, seeing it's Bastille Day.
Bonnin in the break today as only Skil rider, together with a.o. Greg Van Avermaet (BMC), Vasil Kiryienka (Movistar) and last year's polkadot jersey winner Anthony Charteau (Europcar).
With around a hundred kilometres to go, Canadian champion and last year's overall 7th Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin) set off in pursuit of them, facing a tough task of closing the seven minute gap the break had built up.
Bonnin took control of the leading group immediately at the foot of the day's first climb, the Hourquette d'Ancizan, and never moved aside during the whole climb, collecting maximum KoM points on top while reducing the group on the way up.
At the foot of the Tourmalet, an interesting five man group broke away from the climb. It included fallen favourites Peter Velits (HTC), Fredrik Kessiakoff (Astana), Richie Porte (Saxobank) and Wouter Poels (Vacansoleil), plus GC 14th Vladimir Karpets.
Those five soon reached the front group, and dropped all of them in no time. Not far later, Hesjedal also started to dangle at the back of the group, and both Porte and Karpets had to dig deep just to follow.
A few kilometres further down the road was the peloton, controlled by Leopard and Radioshack. Not exactly any murderous pace though, and the leaders increased their advantage with every turn on the pedal.
At the front Kessiakoff continued his assault climb, getting rid of his last two companions, Velits and Poels just before the top of the Tourmalet. What an incredible climb by him!
Already on the earliest slopes of the Luz, Contador jumped. Jelle Vanendert (OmegaPharma) tried to follow him at first, but had to sit up after just a few metres, realising it wasn't possible.
Andy Schleck however, stayed cool and collective just behind his brother and Maxime Monfort, fully trusting that they would bring Contador back.
Andy's smartness payed off, as Frank brought Contador back just a kilometer or so later, also reducing the peloton to just four others: Andy, Contador, Igor Anton and Andreas Klöden.
They were way too late for the stage win though, as an almost forgotten Kessiakoff reached the finish with lots of time to celebrate an absolutely magnificent stage win after being solo all the way from the top of the Tourmalet.
In the sprint for second place, Klöden took charge, gapping everyone but Andy in the final kilometer. A notably frustrated Contador couldn't follow, feeling that the Tour is running out of his hands.
Klöden kept pushing on at a high speed all the way to the line, beating Andy to second place, and gaining time on everyone else. Anton also got a little gap on Contador in the end, finishing 4th, with Contador 5th and Frank Schleck 6th.
A bigger group of favourites finished just over a minute behind Klöden and Schleck, with Evans, Gesink, Kreuziger and Van den Broeck all losing huge amounts of time here.
Biggest loser of all today was Ivan Basso, who got dropped already on the Tourmalet because of bad positioning. He then fought his way back, but never reached the other favourites and lost a full three minutes on Andy Schleck today, and most likely also the chance to win this Tour.

A beautiful and exciting stage! I have loved, it is as if I saw the Tour again
Taken care with Klödi, he can give the surprise if he continues in the cousins put up to the ITT.
I very want to keep on seeing stages! hehe. Good luck mate.

Stage 13
Pau - Lourdes
We're still in the Pyrenees, but with a much easier stage than yesterday's brutal one. Still one HC climb on the route today, but the top of the Aubisque comes with almost fifty kilometres to go, which should be reason enough for most GC contenders to attack today. An excellent opportunity for a breakaway.
For the first time during the whole Tour, the breakaway was a smaller group. Huguet in there together with four others: Stybar (Quickstep), Roelandts (OmegaPharma), Bak (HTC) and Nuyens (Saxobank).
No stage win for them today though, as they got caught and dropped by first Pierrick Fédrigo (FDJ) and...
...Przemyslaw Niemiec (Lampre) on the early slopes of the Aubisque. Those two then formed a leading duo, reaching the top of the Aubisque two minutes ahead of the peloton.
A bit surprisingly, we saw some attacks from the favourites just before the top of the Aubisque. Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) instigated the move and got company from Peter Velits (HTC) and GC fourth Cadel Evans (BMC).
Andy Schleck didn't enjoy having Evans ahead of him on the road and set off in pursuit up the Soulor, just after the top of the Aubisque together with Igor Anton (Euskaltel) and Michele Scarponi (Lampre).
At almost the same time Bradley Wiggins (Sky) misjudged a corner and fell off his bike, losing contact with the other favourites, never to make it back. He most likely lost all chances for an overall podium with this.
Wiggins wasn't the only one though. Alberto Contador (Saxobank) came up against one of the famous PCM non-crash injuries and left the Tour with a dislocated elbow, taking him out of the Vuelta as well.
As we came down on the flat, everything was back together thanks to an incredibly fast descent from the peloton led by Samuel Sánchez. They even gobbled up Fédrigo and Niemiec after closing their two minute advantage.
It stayed together all the way to the final three kilometres where Andreas Klöden (Radioshack) launched a very powerful attack, pulling Igor Anton (Euskaltel) and Ivan Basso (Liquigas) with him.
Basso didn't have the legs to follow the other two fully, and with a kilometer to go it looked like it would be a two-man battle for the stage win, as Klöden and Anton had a slight gap over the rest of the peloton.
Their advantage still wasn't enough though, and a late launch from Peter Velits allowed him to sneak past Ryder Hesjedal in the final metres to take the stage win. A notably disappointed Klöden finished third after being caught in the last hundred metres.

Famous? To be honest I've never seen them =P Anyway, Bertie is out
Kloden seems pretty strong, and so does Huguet in his KOM jersey, he's doing well

Nice advance Huguet has in the KoM... With a little more breakaways, I'm sure he can keep it 'til Paris!
And Contador's withdrawal will hopefuly bring excitement for the final week.

too bad for Contador, so Schleck has to watch Evans now. Hope you can hang on to the KOTM-jersey in tomorrow's difficult stage!

Bad luck for Wiggo and Contador. Klodi is very strong (it can be the surprise of the Tour) and your rider seems sensational with this jersey
Do you believe that he will have forces to maintain it up to Paris? I believe that yes. A greeting and much good luck!

I hope you can keep the KOM jersey in the hard stage tomorrow! Bad luck for Conta and Wiggins, but that is PCM...
Doesn't matter for you, let's say you have 1 competitor less for the KOM jersey
Good luck!

Yep, Huguet's is really battling to stay in it.

Famous might be an exaggeration, but it has happened more than one time to me. Riders just stopping and then abandoning. And Klöden definitely looks very strong. I'd start to get a bit worried if I were Andy.

Yeah, he's got a good lead, but I still doubt he'll manage to hang on in the Alps. Mountain top finish stage winners will get a lot of points, so I think one of the GC contenders might take it in the final week. And I fully agree with your point about Contador's abandon.

No. The team name is Skil - Shimano, not Skill - Shimano.

I also feel a little bit sorry for him. Evans hasn't looked on his best in the earlier mountain stages, so I'm starting to doubt whether he'll be a main contender or not. I definitely won't rule him out though.

Yup, he's strong at the moment. And yeah, bad luck for Wiggo.

I definitely think Klöden will be very dangerous in the last week's Alp stages. He's been looking brilliant so far, and as long as he keeps Andy at this distance, I'm quite sure he'll overtake him in the TT.
But I doubt that Huguet will stay in polkadot all the way to Paris. His mountain stat of 69 doesn't exactly play in his favour on the mountain stages, forcing him to fight hard for every point. As I said earlier, I think we'll see a GC rider taking polkadot in the Alps.

Yeah, bad luck for them but positive for us. And thanks.

If Kloden survives the mountains and doesn't lose much time, he might just win this Tour, because his TT skills are much better than Andy's.
