Crash is F1 happens due to 2 reasons; your fault, or other person fault.

How can you relate the two when this crash was neither?

Cant help to think luck in the accident for Porte that Froome was involved in it.. (and TvG and Quintana and Valverde somehow benefitted from it aswell).

And this sums up what happened perfectly, if any other rider had crashed nothing would've changed, what makes Froome special?

The UCI just make things up as they go

No, this is very different. Froome gets Mollemas time, but his own place, so if they were riding for medals he would have ended up with nothing. If the marathon would last for more days the unlucky guy would probably have gotten the time of the winner. Cycling is also another sport, because of the focus of being gentlemen, and noone would want the tour being decided on a single stage because of a spectator falling in front of the race.

This was of course a very difficult case for the jury; as all of the top GC guys did lose some time, so impossible to make it fair. They then look at the most obvious thing; that Froome and Porte would have followed Mollema to the line and thus gets the same time. At this point the best 3 loses a bit more time than the followers; but that gap is not big, and it would be impossible to make a fair new gap for all three to the others. I definitely think ASO has done the right thing today, even if harsh for many - who wants Froome as far behind as possible. If Froome had caused the crash himself he should blame himself, but when something else is to blame, Chris Froome shouldn't get punished. I am wondering what the forum would have said if Froome was the one getting away quickly with Mollema running far behind; if the same would have been written.

Thank you for a well written post, you really nailed it.

I was a bit below 1k. When I rode up MVt they told me to walk the last kilometer.. it was pretty packed. Thex even forbid me to go further ro rhe top, so all people had to come down again.

Motos and cars are way too mAny here. The way motos behave is a risk to people and the riders. They don't care about security. Frankly they just pushed through and didn't look back.

What did this decision do for rider safety? Not attacking you at all, it's a genuine question as to the reasoning behind that statement

Hypothetically, let's say a Quintana/Yates/Porte/Mollema/Aru-fan caused Froome to crash and the organizers didn't do anything... I don't think it would be the last time we would see incidents like that. I also think the decision was the best that could be made today - especially for rider safety!

Wasn't able to watched the stage live so I decided to record it. Just watched it.

Absolutely mad stage.

By the looks of it Mollema got the worst deal out of the jury ruling. Froome and Porte ST i have no problems with.

Quintana ST as in the yates group is ridicolous.

I agree on this mate, and with further thought perhaps (at least to silent Froome-haters) Chris should be handed a small time penalty for running without a bike. It could have been accepted, and thinking on the wheel handling that caused Porte time in the Giro last year one would think it could be almost similar for braking the rules.
That is if it's clearly said that you can't run forward in the race without a bike. Froome got confused and got panic, but if he would have mounted a motorbike in the mess, he would have surely been penalized.
So perhaps 30 sec, or what ??
That would have saved Adam to from not being willing to dress in yellow. Very sporty of him, but that's Orica lads in general I think.

You have to allow for judgement to be used in the application of rules. Otherwise, by the letter of the law any rider that lets go of his bike for any reason gets disqualified as they have completed part of the course without the bike. Get knocked off your bike? Sorry, but you flew through the air for 2.6 metres of the course without your bike therefore you're out. Better luck next time.

You also have to prevent any actions of fans from having an effect on the race, as far as possible, otherwise bike races will be won by whoever has the most powerful army. Quintana attacks and drops Froome? No problem, a Froome fan 1km ahead can just knock Nairo off his bike and prevent Nairo winning.

I have no idea why Froome decided to run up the mountain. Panic seems the most likely explanation as you can't always predict what commissaires are going to do. Then again, if I were Froome I probably wouldn't want to stand quietly next to a bunch of disrespectful idiots and present an easy target for 6+ minutes. It conferred no racing advantage, so it would be idiotic to penalise him for it.

The purpose of rules and organisers is to make it a fair contest of cycling ability, as opposed to a contest of who has the most stupid fans or a random lottery. The decision here seems like the closest they can come to this, so it is fine.

I've asked for this multiple times in the past wish they would give us the ignore option

have they taken the time at some distance from the finish or just gave Froome and Porte same time as Mollema? It would be stupid if the latter since what is the point if all 3 would still loose time bc of that fan.

All rules should be applied evenly.

That was the case what disturbes me. Froome is great rider and amazing person..somehow group that booing him at podium will be bigger and bigger every year. Why?
Big part for that going for Brailford. Classic dick team manager. Example..
Just finished Wegelius book. Wegelius sell he's services for italian team at the worlds (because these days pro's ride worlds free, without any bonuses). Not great thing to do.
Britain cycling federation give him lifetime ban from British team (even dopers did not get lifetime bans back then). They also fired few Wegelius friends from organisation.
Top of all..they give advice that wegelius should call to Bradsford and say that he is sry. about that all.
Charles got lifetime ban..why this sadist wanted that call also? (he did get that call).

I love these threads some days, highly entertaining reading!

Couple of quick things:
1) Can someone show me the UCI rule that bans running without a bike?
2) I'm slightly confused why people are pissed? Or rather, are people pissed at Froome or the UCI?
