La Pomme Marseille - Bye for now!
Pellizotti2
Thanks.

@ Avin - Dombo is a quite decent timetriallist also in real life, actually. Third in the Gila TT, among other things. Faster than riders like Craddock and De Maar on that occasion. But obviously not on the level he showed here!

UCI: World Championships: Road Race

The opening kilometers are raced at a very high speed, due to Great Britain and Germany chasing every moving object from the front of the field. Clearly they believe that the Cauberg wont trouble Cavendish and Greipel.

Around thirty kms into the race, a little group finally breaks free of the pack. Most notable name involved surely being Carlos Betancur from Colombia. Accompanying him are Juraj Sagan, Oleg Chuzhda, Assan Bazayev and Frantisek Rabon.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/wcrr_02.jpg
The day's primary breakaway group.

The peloton is meanwhile still controlled by GB and Germany. During the period following the intensive beginning, they share the pacemaking at the front - preventing the break from gaining more than eight minutes at any point. It eventually starts to rapidly decrease, as the final 100 km arrive.

After a long and boring race, things finally start to look exciting with 35 kilometers to the line. The furious pace set by mainly Germany cuts the peloton in half, leaving no more than 60 riders on the right side!

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/wcrr_03.jpg
The peloton breaks in two pieces!

Joaquim Rodriguez, Simon Gerrans, Matthew Goss, Thor Hushovd, Michael Albasini, Lars Boom, Maxim Iglinskiy and Taylor Phinney are all caught sleeping in the wrong place - causing them to miss the split!

The tempo cools down a bit a few ks later. This creates the opportunity we're here to look for - so Antomarchi sets off after the remainders of the breakaway near the top of the Bemelerberg.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/wcrr_04.jpg
Antomarchi tries to break away.

He catches up with the last man standing from the early break, Betancur, just as they reach the 17-kilometer final lap.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/wcrr_05.jpg
Betancur gets company from Antomarchi.

The German-controlled peloton follows, just over a minute later. A bit too much for Gilbert's liking, so he takes off together with Cancellara and, very surprisingly, Freire - who doesn't seem to trust his chances in a sprint.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/wcrr_06.jpg
The first big move!

The trio quickly realize that it's hard to create any gap when attacking on the flat. Therefore they slow down and drop back into the peloton - probably saving the energy for another attack later.

On the final climb up the Bemelerberg, Nick Nuyens puts in a little dig. He quickly passes by an empty Betancur and joins Antomarchi at the front. The peloton gears up another step though, and it's all back together with just the Cauberg remaining.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/wcrr_07.jpg
Nuyens and Antomarchi getting caught.

A clearly strong Nuyens is up on the pedals again, on a little incline just ahead of the descent down to Valkenburg. Cancellara and Langeveld tag on, together with our last card - Vichot. A really dangerous move.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/wcrr_08.jpg
Nuyens gives it one last go.

But once again - no serious gap emerges. Down in Valkenburg, it's all back together with just one climb left...

The sprint is kicked off immediately as they begin ascending. Degenkolb makes the first big push, moving past Nuyens into the lead on the far right hand side. Greipel tries to follow, but explodes after just a few hundred meters. Instead, it's Cavendish who surprisingly easily follows!

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/wcrr_09.jpg
Greipel can't match Degenkolb, but maybe Cavendishc can?

Nobody can match Degenkolb's killer acceleration - and a gap opens up as they pass over the top of the Cauberg. Amazingly enough, Cavendish is the only one who manages to stay with him! It's clearly between the two of them!

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/wcrr_10.jpg
Degenkolb vs. Cavendish

The Manx Missile was clearly holding back for the right moment. Inside the final k, he bursts out of Degenkolb's wheel to confortably retain the rainbow jersey! Talk about impressive performance!

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/wcrr_11.png
Cavendish retains the title!

Degenkolb is a clear second - well aware that he could've won this if he hadn't been forced to launch the sprint for Greipel so early. Still, insane result for the young man from Germany. He'll be back.

Gasparotto wins a close sprint for bronze a long way behind the first two. Farrar clashes a bit in fourth, after a weak season - while Freire perhaps could've been able to challenge if he hadn't attacked earlier.

Degenkolb always dominates that race in my careers, Cav must have had a brilliant form! Shock

Great style of racing the French showed, I guess that was the most you could do.

Ian Butler
That's a surprising result Shock

Pellizotti2
@ cio - Cav seemed to be on his absolute limit at the top of the climb. I actually thought Degenkolb would crack him, but it turned out to be a little too far for him in the end.

@ Ian - Actually, not really. Considering how hard the race was irl - yes. On the other hand, it's not really surprising - since it was set as flat. Wink

2.2: Tour du Gévaudan Languedoc-Roussillon

Back to trade teams again. Not at all surprisingly, the next stop on our schedule is in France. The upcoming two days will be spent competing in this rather difficult race. The overall will probably go to a strong climber - since stage two climbs up to Montée Laurent Jalabert near the end. Really tough.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/langue_01.png

Most of our riders will need a few more racedays to reach competitive level. Skujins will still definitely try to stay in contact for an eventual sprint on the lighter opening stage - whilst Koretzky and Perichon will go for the overall. I'm not really expecting much however. Mainly a prep race.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/langue_02.png

My eye immediately moves to Joe Dombrowski. Considering how the worlds TT went, he should be in superb shape. I expect him to try and create something on the Croix-Neuve.

Others to watch out for are home riders like Julien Simon and Steven Tronet. Although mainly focusing on the sprints - they're both very capable of handling stages that don't end at the top of a climb. Really dangerous candidates if the stages aren't ridden at a very high pace.

2.2: Tour du Gévaudan Languedoc-Roussillon: Stage 1

An out-of-form Perichon attacks immediately from the start, to try his luck in a breakaway. Shortly afterwards, he gets company from Pierre Drancourt, and a little while later also from Martijn Tusveld and Alexander Gottfried.

The combination of home soil bonus and strong daily form gives Perichon just about enough strength to gun down the other three for one of the two KoM sprints and both intermediate sprints. He then passes over the second and last KoM in second place - enough to don the polkadot jersey.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/langue_03.jpg
Perichon on his way to the KoM lead.

The adventure ends for the escapees well outside the final 10 ks, thanks to work done by Bontrager and Europcar. However, just as they start to slow down a bit to prepare for the sprint - Koretzky attacks, inside the last three!

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/langue_04.jpg
Koretzky digs in on a little incline near the finish!

He never really manages to extend the gap his initial acceleration gave him, so when passing under the kilometer flag - he's desperately trying to hold off a closing peloton, led by Bob Jungels.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/langue_05.jpg
Jungels closing the gap in the last kilometer.

Koretzky has nothing to respond with when the sprinters come storming back at him in the incredibly fast finish. He is caught just a hundred meters from the actual line - still not at the finish however...

For some reason, the race continues until 300 m past the line - with a confused Jasper Bovenhuis raising his arms - shocking everyone! Veilleux and Bacquet complete an unexpected podium, while Skujins is fifth.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/langue_06.jpg
Bovenhuis can't believe his eyes!

In the GC, Perichon positions himself in third - thanks to time bonuses. Together with Veilleux, he sits 8 seconds down on Bovenhuis. Skujins and Koretzky are also found inside the top 15, with the crucial stage up ahead.

2.2: Tour du Gévaudan Languedoc-Roussillon: Stage 2

With Perichon unable to defend his KoM jersey due to his high GC position, Skujins takes his place in the day's escape group. A successful move as it turns out - as he takes both early climbs and the provisional classification lead.

When the break reaches the day's final ascent; the Croix-Neuve, Skujins turns up the heat. This proves to be too much for all his companions, except Johan Mombaerts. The favourites meanwhile start to attack from behind.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/langue_07.jpg
Skujins shattering his escape group to pieces.

Mombaerts also blows up in the incredibly steep final part of the climb, leaving Skujins to solo over the top - securing the KoM jersey.

An elite group of four, led by Dombrowski, follows half a minute down. The big field, including both Perichon and Koretzky, goes over another thirty seconds later.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/langue_08.jpg
Dombrowski, Jungels, Durasek and Goos breaking free.

Skujins and Mombaerts are both caught and quickly dropped by the foursome down on the flat leading back towards Mende. The peloton meanwhile tries to shut down the gap, without any success.

It comes down to a sprint from the leading group. Jungels leads out with a kilometer and a half remaining, but still easily holds on all the way to the line. Dombrowski is a clear second, whilst Goos grabs the final time bonus.

i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l614/adamsellling/La%20Pomme%20Marseille/langue_09.png
Jungels triumphs, in front of Dombrowski.

Luckily for us, Veilleux leads the field back to contact with the front group in the final k. Therefore no time lost for Perichon, Koretzky or Skujins - who all finish inside the large front group.

Also inside the group was the yellow jersey of Bovenhuis - who therefore takes a very surprising overall victory - less than a second in front of Jungels. Perichon ends up in 5th and Skujins in 8th. Together with the KoM jersey, certainly enough to call this race a prosperity.

@ Freitas - He's actually a very promising youngster. Capable sprinter and prologue rider. Probably not a future star, but definitely a nice rider.

News: Bouygues Telecom joins as co-sponsor!

We signed the deal already a few months ago, but the official announcement comes now. Former main sponsor of the current Europcar team; Bouygues Telecom, is the new co-sponsor for La Pomme Marseille!

dataxisnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/BouyguesTel.jpg

The company's management got in contact with me earlier this year, after seeing our success in the Continental races. After a few weeks of negotiation, we agreed on a deal that allows them to sponsor us over at least the next two seasons. The extra money will certainly be helpful when we take on the ProContinental Tour in 2013.

That's all for now!

Cavendish winning is a surprise. Really like the screens and shame that Greipel wasn`t in similar form obviously. Wink

Nice co-sponsor for the next season. Will there be any shirt changes or do you keep the La Pomme jersey?

Nice to see a new co-sponsor join the Team Wink

Hope this will bring in some funds to strengthen the squad for next season Wink
