Thanks again. Kittel is definitely improving, but still a long way to go for a win.

Stage 6
Dinan - Lisieux
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_6.png

The longest stage of this year's Tour stretches over the 222 kilometres between Dinan and Lisieux. It's said to be another day for the sprinters, but it's nothing for the weaker guys like Kittel. Lots of up and downs during the day, and also the finish is uphill. A Gilbert day I'd say.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_6_1.jpg

Skil x2 in the breakaway today, in the shapes of Geniez and Huguet. Eight other brave escapees joined them, forming a group of ten. Geniez almost got all the KoM sprints, but missed out on the KoM jersey by just one point.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_6_2.jpg

The break splitted up the final categorized climb, and Geniez thanked Huguet for his support on the climbs by sacrifising himself to give his team mate a slim chance to fight for the stage win. Gaudin (Europcar) and Elmiger (AG2R) followed while the rest of the break were caught by the chasing peloton.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_6_3.jpg

It was all back together with about five kilometres to go though after very hard work by Romain Feillu's Vacansoleil team mates. Kittel got the perfect man to follow in Gilbert, but a bad position instead.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_6_4.jpg

Hushovd was the first of the sprinters to make his move, jumping on the far right side, drawing Rojas and Vaitkus with him, while Goss immediately took charge in the middle with Dumoulin on his wheel. Green jersey Feillu got blocked and came a bit behind, as did Kittel.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_6_5.png

He got some serious challenge from Feillu and Gilbert in the final metres, but they proved to have gone too late as Matthew Goss hit the line first. Dumoulin's right choice of wheel gave him second place just ahead of the incredibly fast Gilbert. Kittel responded much better than expected in the hard finale and took another Top 10, 9th.

No time gaps in the end and no change in the GC.

New signing

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/plindau.png

After the completing of talented Therkildsen last week, we've managed to get our hands on another Scandinavian prodigy. This time Philip Lindau, from the worlds best country. Pfft
He's not taken from the U23 division, but from the Elite-2. Lindau is a real life rider, and also the 2011 national champion of Sweden, a title he wasn't able to defend in the game. I added him as well as a few other young Swedes before I started the career, and Lindau must have gotten a good potential, since his stats has improved a lot since the season start. Philip is now a strong rider for the hills and also a decent climber. If his development continues like this, then he'll be a very useful domestique in the future.
We're looking forward to have him and the other youngsters in the team during 2012 and hope that they will all continue to improve as time passes. Also nice to have a Swede in the team, and I'd happily see him getting company from one or two of his compatriots in the future.

Stage 7
Le Mans - Châteauroux
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_7.png

We finish the first week of racing with, suprise, surprise, another flat stage. This is starting to get a bit boring, as the sprinters teams hasn't given a single breakaway the chance to fight it out for a stage win. Hopefully that'll change tomorrow when we hit the Massif Central. Feillu again today?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_7_1.jpg

Another quite large breakaway group on the move today, involving among others Hupond, Pozzato (Katusha), this Tour's most agressive rider Boom with his third or fourth break already and again very surprisingly Greipel (OmegaPharma), who apparently isn't here to participate in the sprints.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_7_2.jpg

Unfortunately the sprinters teams once again kept the gap at a reasonable distance, but as the gap sank to under a minute, Geraint Thomas grabbed the opportunity to attack and drop all early escapees but two, Malori (Lampre) and Hupond, slightly opening up the gap in the process.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_7_3.jpg

Also that move was shut down by HTC and Vacansoleil though. I've started to dislike those two for not giving the escapees any chance at all in this Tour. Good news was we managed to set up a train for Kittel today.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_7_4.jpg

We even managed to get to the front as we entered the final five kilometres, with Curvers showing his Dutch colours to the TV spectators while doing a brilliant work leading Van Hummel and Kittel.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_7_5.png

We got the position, but it still wasn't enough. Kittel couldn't match the acceleration as the top sprinters launched. Therefore another disappointing 8th place today, while watching a very impressive Feillu pick up his third victory in this Tour and expanding his points jersey lead even more.

Once again no gaps, and no overall changes - only the Top 10.

Kittel's doing well, he will get better as soon as Feillu will start to fail Wink

Lindau seems like a good signing if he raises his 66-68 stats into the 70+ quickly.. he's just 19 years, so there's plenty of room and time Smile

And - I know, I've mentioned it (several times) before - the finish-screens are still awesome!

Better luck next time, but still a great top 10 Wink

Stage 8
Aigurande - Super-Besse
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_8.png

We finally hit the first of the decisive stages in this year's Tour, as we enter the Massif Central. Two main climbs on the route, with the last of them being the final climb up to the ski resort of Super-Besse. It's not very hard, but definitely enough to give us a first look at who's in shape and who's not.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_8_1.jpg

The day's big early breakaway group splitted up the penultimate climb of Col de Saint Croix Robert, with Europcar's Gautier going solo near the top of it, chased by Thomas Bonnin, and then a smaller group with a not well feeling Geniez.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_8_2.jpg

Leopard and Radioshack were in control in the peloton, but they weren't chasing superhard and it began to look like the breakaway could make it all the way, as they reached the top almost five minutes later.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_8_3.jpg

We then jump to the final climb and the first serious attack in this race. No one else than Contador used the flatter part in the middle of the climb to put in a really strong acceleration, covered by Gilbert and Rodriguez.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_8_4.jpg

A confident Andy Schleck stayed calm and then made the junction as the road started going upwards again. Still no sign of the elder Schleck, Wiggins, Sánchez and Kreuziger.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_8_5.png

Nothing the favourites did could stop Gautier from grabbing a magnificent home Tour stage win though, as he held off Bonnin in the finale and reached the line solo. We haven't seen the last of this guy I think.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_8_6.jpg

Bonnin didn't have the legs to close the gap Gautier created himself on the penultimate climb and kept losing time all the way to the line. He still saved his second place from a very fast closing Gilbert and Rodriguez, while Schleck and Contador finished just behind them.

The bad weather and wet roads caused a lot of accidents during the day, and bad luck hit among others Frank Schleck and points jersey holder Romain Feillu today. Schleck escaped with some scratches and a big time loss, while Feillu was badly injured and had to abandon the race. What a shame for him and Vacansoleil.

Great 2nd for Bonnin. Too bad Geniez had a bad daily form, I think together they could have beaten Gautier. Great attacking so far in the Tour with more as 1 rider in every long break. I think the win will come Wink

Thanks all. Unfortunately Geniez has lost a bit of form, and is now around 90 while the others are all 95+. Hopefully he can recover a bit later in the race.

Stage 9
Issoire - Saint-Flour

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_9.png
The ninth day of the Tour provides the hardest stage so far in the race. No less than six categorized climbs, and many others without a category. A good day for those aiming for the KoM jersey to join the breakaway and possibly fight it out for another stage win. Smaller gaps are also expected between the big favourites in the steep uphill finish.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_9_1.jpg

No bigger breakaway group today, more like many groups that never seemed to come together to one. The main reason for that was that the escapees didn't cooperate at all, and launched one attack after another. The most active one was KoM leader and yesterday's stage winner Cyril Gautier.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_9_3.jpg

After lots and lots of attacks a small leading group finally established up the Pas du Peyrol climb. Gautier of course in there, together with Huguet, Gerrans and Malacarne.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_9_4.jpg

Their lead were controlled all the time though, and as we reached the second half of the stage, Leopard and OmegaPharma sent up some riders to reduce the advantage.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_9_5.jpg

Huguet gave his all in one last try on the penultimate little climb, dropping his three companions. Unfortunately the now very small pack weren't far behind at all.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_9_6.jpg

Huguet was swapped up just a few minutes later, just as points leader Philippe Gilbert made the first move. No immediate response, but a speed-up in the group from Radioshack.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_9_7.jpg

Gilbert's first attack was closed down, so he tried again in the descent, this time joined by Kreuziger, Sanchez, Wiggins, Van den Broeck, Gesink and Evans. Neither Andy Schleck nor Contador seemed interested.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_9_8.jpg

Cadel Evans made his way to the front as we started the final uphill sprint. His tremendous strength saw him creating a slight gap to the others, and a notably frustrated Andy Schleck got blocked behind some others, unable to move forward.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_9_9.jpg

Evans timed his sprint to perfection and had plenty of time to celebrate his career's second Tour stage win. He's looking very, very good, so Andy Schleck will have to pay more attention once we hit the serious mountains.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/tdf_9_10.jpg

The others had nothing to respond with when Evans made his move, and Philippe Gilbert led the other favourites over the line twenty seconds behind Evans. Andy Schleck finished with very high speed, and I think he'd have been able to follow Evans if he wouldn't have got blocked.

Nine riders finished outside the time limit today, including world champion Mark Cavendish (HTC) and his big rival André Greipel (OmegaPharma) !
