@OZ: It has been a great race for Martijn. Came in with no real expectation, but shining through out so far

The second week was initially billed as survival, but following my exploits over the first nine stages, I felt like I could come out of the race with more than just the experience of completing my first Grand Tour.
With the Mountains dominating the Second Week, I knew that I wouldn't be lasting too long in the Maglia Rosa. However, I was also sitting pretty at the top of the Points Classification, and up and coming routes favoured myself over Elia Viviani (OmegaPharma), who was my nearest rival. Could I seriously come away from my first Giro d'Italia with the Maglia Rosso? The hilly stage finish to Stage 13 was a particular target of mine.
As expected, I was spat out the back of the peleton the first moment that the Giro hit the mountains on Stage 10. I was riding well, but the pace of the Climbers was just too much to handle, and the narrow roads didn't help either. My time in Pink had lasted 5 days, and I was more than proud of the achievement.
I would finish the stage 12'27" down on Stage Winner Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), who comfortably took over the lead in the Maglia Rosa. Rohan rode well on the stage, and moved up to 8th on GC. I rode home with Davide Malacarne for company, and was hoping that today's efforts hadn't taken too much out of me.
It was agreed that Stage 11 would a gentler stage all-round for the team, and we would look to delivering Adrien at the finish. However, fate would make it a Giro to forget for the French Sprinter, as a crash and then a mechanical issue would rule him out.
Approaching the finish, I decided to have a go myself at the finish. I was in the Points Jersey, so I thought why not! Viviani looked like he was struggling in the run to the finish, and Giant weren't too keen on Kittel's chances either. Arashiro led me out perfectly, and not a single person came past me! I had my second Giro victory, and it was in a bunch sprint.
The ITT on Stage 12 would give me a time to recover, and I took my time over the 42km route. It was flat, and surprising I felt really good on the bike. After the efforts in the Mountains, plus the Sprint on Stage 11, I was convinced that I would struggle, but I felt fine. Dennis was flying though, and finished 7th on the ITT. Race Leader Nibali was the only GC rival to better his time, and he moved up to 5th Overall. Great riding from the Australian. I finished in 29th place, 3'18" behind stage winner Taylor Phinney (BMC).
The targeted Stage 13 didn't go to plan, as the ascent to the Cat.2 KoM Spront was harder than it looked on paper, plus when the GC favourite do battle on the climb, there was no chance I could react. My hope of taking a large number of points went with the attacks, and the Standings showed that Nibali was now my biggest rival to the Maglia Rosso. With the big Mountains still to come, could the Italian take that Jersey as well? Eduard Vorganov (Katusha) took the win from the break.
Tactics had to be put in place to try and limit the impact of the Mountains. Nibali was in top form, and he looked like he could win every stage where the road went upwards. On Stage 14, I attacked with Arashiro in tow. A group of 6 formed, and I was able to take maximum points at the Intermediate Sprint. As the mountains came, my race was over, and Nibali went on the win the stage, and put me 4 points behind him. This was going to be close.
The final stage before the rest day would be a gentle ride for me. Meintjes spent his day in the break, as it looked like Nibali could have also been a threat to his KoM Jersey. However, after a long day in the saddle, Louis did fantastically to all but confirm the victory with 6 stages remaining. Even better was Rohan's performance so far. He was consistently riding to Top 10 finishes in the Mountains, and going into the rest day, he sat 3rd on GC. Pete Kennaugh (Sky) timed his late attack to perfection and took the win.
Personally, I couldn't wait to get this final week started! I was 16 points down on Nibali, and the remaining stages 50:50 when it came to Flat and Mountainous.

Martijn is having a great Giro so far. Riding in the pink certainly puts him in the picture for a good team next season. Now he just has to win the points jersey.
Dennis and Meintjes are also doing great. Shame Europcar wants to get rid of them all. |

Martijn still in with a good chance here, hopefully some breakaways win and reduce Nibali's chance to get more points. Very strong performances from Rohan and Louis too, hopefully they can hold on to their jerseys til the end of the race

@mvh: Many new teams are after Martijn for next season, but nothing decided yet! The sponsors are unhappy with the number of French riders (or the lack of them) so there is only one logical solution from Europcar...
@sutty: Martijn was always going to struggle in the Mountains (MO 65 stats) so the drop down the standings was inevitable.
@Calamada: It has been a great Giro for he squad
@OZ: Meintjes looks all but confirmed as the KoM winner. A final attack on the Mountain stage could seal it though
*******
Just realised that I missed of Martijn on the General Classification breakdown. Add now

The Biggest Week of my Career
And so we arrive at the final week of the Giro d'Italia. I currently sit 29th on GC, over 40 minutes down on the Race Leader Nibali (Astana), who needed a disaster on the last 6 stages not to win back-to-back Pink Jerseys.
My battle in the final week would be the Maglia Rosso. I sat 16 points behind Nibali in the Points Classification, and with 50/50 split of Flat and Mountain stages in the last week, it could easily swing either way. All I knew though, it was going to be a tough fight. The placement of the intermediate sprint on Stage 18 favoured Nibali.
Two flat stages came before the big mountain stages and the Mountain TT. Given my form in the sprints, I put all my chips on taking a majority of the points in the dash for the line on Stage 16. I won the intermediate sprint comfortably, taking 6 points behind the break, and cut Nibali's lead to 10 points. However, what I didn't count on would be the bigger sprinters in the race. In the mass sprint at the end, I was swamped and finished outside the points. Not a disaster, but a big blow to my Maglia Rosso hopes.
Stage 17 was another flat stage, but it was time for Plan B. One or two points at the Intermediate Sprints, whilst scrapping for points on the line wouldn't be enough with the Mountains next. I attacked, and went for the 20 points at the Intermediate. I had a 10 point lead over Nibali now, but it wasn't a lead that was safe.
The main stage that worried me what the Mountainous Stage 18. The two big climbs could easily rule me out of any points at the Intermediate Sprint, and the finish was made for Nibali to attack and win the stage. Luckily a large break of 11 riders ruled out any points at the Intermediate Sprints for both myself and Nibali. At one point it looked like the break would also take the stage win, and leave me in pole position, but Nibali had other ideas. He attacks on the final climb, taking back 6 minutes on the break, and sprinted for the win. He was back to 10 points ahead...
I needed to attack in the Mountains, and as I joined a break of 7 riders on Stage 19, I worked hard to take back my advantage. 20 points at the Intermediate Sprint swung it back in my favour, but the Mountainous finish meant that was it for my points collection.
However, unlike yesterday, the break would succeed. Louis found himself in the break, wanting to secure the KoM jersey, and as it dawned on the break that they would take the win, he attacked on the descent to the finish. Outsprinting Vorganov (Katusha) in the short rise to the finish, he took at great win. Nibali could only finish in 6th, so the Points Difference going into the final stage to Milan would be 4 points.
The Mountain TT on Stage 20 offered no Points, so it would all come down to the final Stage. The ITT was comfortable, and my strong finish meant that I would end my first Grand Tour in 40th place on GC. That, when coupled with the fight for the Maglia Rosso, made it a very successful Giro d'Italia for me. The press predicted a Top 40 finish, and I duly delivered it.
Rohan would receive a bitter blown on the final TT. On Stage 19, he finally suffered his 'bad day' in the saddle, and his Podium rivals punished him for it, just had he had done with them only 1 stage earlier. He performed fantastically on the Mountain TT, finishing the stage in 5th, but he would ultimately miss out on the podium by 28 seconds. I really felt for him.
The run into Milan on Stage 21 would be a procession for many riders. Nibali had ridden away with the Maglia Rosa, Louis comfortably won the Maglia Azzurra, whilst Rohan's disappointment about missing the podium was slightly lifted by winning the Maglia Bianca. All that was left was the Maglia Rosso. I wanted to complete the triple win for Europcar.
Arashiro led me out for the Intermediate Sprint, where 6 points for available after a break of 5 attacked off the front. I took the 6 points, and moved 2 points ahead of Nibali. As long as he didn't finish 14th or higher on the stage, I would come away with the Jersey. Nibali would cross the line in 16th... My heart was in my mouth waiting for the confirmed results. The feeling as I stepped on the podium was amazing!

What an excellent result! It was always going to be close but that is an incredible effort to win a Giro points classification with a rider who is neither a sprinter or a GC contender. Bad luck for Rohan near the end, but that was just about the perfect race for Europcar, so congratulations!

Congrats! Great stuff you fought till the very end like this. As OZrocker wrote, hats off for your result in Points classification. It's just a pity you missed overall podium by 28 seconds... But I think this was great Giro for the team. |

@OZ: Thanks It was a battle, and Martijn just come out on top Rohan struggled on a stage where he had no chance of taking any time back. 4th is still a great result, and he won the White Jersey.
@HuDCC & calamada: Thanks to you both All-round it was a great Giro for the team. Shame that it will be the last year that Martijn will ride with them
@sutty: There is a pride throughout the team, and a good advert for the riders who will be moving on next year

I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened the newspaper and saw the headline: Astana ProTeam to fold at the end of 2015. The Team had just won the Giro d'Italia with Vincenzo Nibali, taking the Team Classification with it. Both victories were done in a very commanding fashion. What had gone wrong?
Reading further into the article, as well as reading other bits online, it seemed that the team chequered past, and its relationship with doping, had reared its ugly head again. First it was revealed that Ruslan Tleubayev had tested positive for EPO during the final week of the Giro, with his B-sample also gave a positive result. The UCI issued the Kazakh rider with a 2-year ban from the 28th May 2015.
This blow to the team was soon followed by the news that irregularities were found in the Biological Passport of Vladislav Gorbunov, dating back to the beginning of the season. He was suspended immediately by the Astana management, pending investigation by the UCI. This turned out to be the straw that broke the camel's back, and enough was enough for the Management. At the end of 2015, they would be no more.
There was no news on who would replace Astana in the WorldTour, but rumours had already already been circulating; from a new Portuguese team starting up in 2016 to the return of a Big Name from the past.

I hate dopers and Astana in general to be honest. The speculation begins whether that means Nibali was on drugs as well.

@all: I didn't want to bring doping into the story, but how else do you get rid of Astana... I'm not their biggest fan either, so that is why they were ended. I'm sure you will all love the team that will replace them...
