Probably a smart move to not go all out for the GC with such little support left. Too many stronger climbers on the mountain stages but the hills seem to suit Arcier just fine

Stage 7 | Campobasso › Chieti, 189 km
There was an eerie atmosphere in the team bus ahead of the 7th stage. With only 4 of us left the place felt desolated and depressing. The only bright spot my red points jersey which we wanted to defend at all costs (although Francesco his Italian NC jersey was a beaut as well), and today’s stage would be perfect for that.
With zero sections of flat road today’s hilly course suited me perfect especially with the final steep section into Chieti which would create an explosive final among the puncheurs.
Another result of losing 5 teammates (more specifically Thomas Dekker) meant that with my 25 years I was the oldest rider within our team. My role as example meaning I had keep from scratching the itch I rode around with all day to attack on one of the early climbs before the final.
Luckly the men at Sky where more than willing to keep me quite by keeping up a tight pace all day. Helped by the rain this led to us crossing the final hill before Chieti with a drastically reduced peloton of only 31 riders. My biggest rivals for the win Purito, Moser and Majka.
The young Majka proving he hadn’t learned anything from our race in the Algarve earlier this season, by attacking on the waving section just after the top. The Pole was quickly caught back thanks to Astana’s Kangert and our own Bob Jungels. The young Luxembourgian upping the pace enough to launch us onto the final climb.
Taking the lead I kept the pace high enough to cut of everyone their breath, but still making sure I didn’t blow myself up. That darned Purito still had oxygen to spare as he dashed away from the pack, without a second of doubt I reacted with Moser in my wheel. For a moment we danced up the narrow steep wall side by side, but it was the Italian who cracked first with Purito once again pulling away but I followed surprisingly easy. With about 150m left I placed my deciding attack overtaking Purito right in the final corner, making him and the rest of my pack eat my dust as I comfortably rode to my second stage win!

Stage 8 | Teramo › Terni, 201 km
With 3 stage wins in the first week our Giro had been a great success so far. Even with the loss of 5 teammates there was reason enough for us to start the 8th stage relaxed. Me in particular trying to save my legs for tomorrow’s stage which would be a mini Strade Bianchi. As the media liked to call it.
Everyone knew that today would be a day for the sprinters, but that didn’t keep the final from being hectic. Leading to half a dozen of crashes in the descent towards Terni in the final 10km. Major victims were Chris Horner and Wilco Kelderman, both climbers able to continue, but losing major time in the process.
Even though I was firmly placed in the points jersey it still didn’t make me a sprinter. I managed to pick up 2 points in the final as I lost a small portion of my lead on Porte as the Australian finished ahead of me. Nobody proved to be a match for Viviani though, who took another win ahead of Guarnieri and Meersman. Making one wonder what Cavendish and Kittel were doing here?

Stage 9 | Orvieto › Monte Sante Marie, 165 km
With a 165km long route through hilly Tuscany with plenty of gravel sections today’s stage could bring some changes to the general classification. In our case there wasn’t much we could do with a sick Roussey hanging at the back of the peloton for most of the day. Nonetheless without surprises today was a good opportunity for a stage win.
Thankfully the men at Sky went with their standard procedure and controlled the stage from the start, allowing Damuseau, Pinizzotto, Cousin and Lagutin to get early screen time as they broke away their adventure lasting for most of the day.
It was with 30km left in the stage when the young Pole Majka opened the final with a surprise acceleration in the downhill towards Buenconvento with Porte and Hoogerland immediately following.
The attack was quickly neutralized by a strong Bob Jungels, his efforts quickly left meaningless when Majka once again stood on the pedals the same Porte and Hoogerland following, but this time joined by Aru, Rabottini, Kastell and Pozzovivo.
Once again it was Jungels who quickly caught up to the group, minus Pozzovivo who went after the early escapees by himself. The high pace we stormed across the gravel with did provide for victims as it were Poels and Rodriguez who struggled to keep up with the pack and slowly dropped out off now to 24 riders reduced peloton.
As we raced through the town of Buenconvento it was Moser who launched his attack out of the reduced peloton. With a clearly fading Jungels there was nobody willing to respond to the Italian his attack (including myself in the hope of countering someone else.) Moser was allowed to set up a solo chase towards the early breakaway. Forcing our hand by placing Bongiorno at the head of the peloton.
With 10km to go the situation in the race had turned into;
<Moser> 16” <Escapees + Pozzovivo> 1’21” <Group Favourites> 1’12” <Group Poels> 1’08” <Group Rodriguez>
With 5km left we finally had the escapees in sight which was my cue to launch my first and final acceleration of the day, luckily enough letting the group behind me as nobody had the power to respond.
I quickly took over certain victims from the early break, as I passed the bow for the final 2km I could see Pozzovivo ahead of me and Moser in turn ahead of him. The situation seemed within hand, but the bird had already escaped the cage as Moser was about to pass the flamme rouge to solo his way to the stage win.
I was still able to overtake Pozzovivo as I gave my all towards my third 2nd place of this Giro. I knew I would not take the flowers, but my efforts made me finish over a minute ahead of Porte and his companions. Meaning I would enjoy the rest-day while wearing pink!

Looking good for Nicholas. It's great to take time on his rivals before the big mountains. |

Wow, what a great effort! The rest day should do the team some good too with all the withdrawals surely having taken a toll on Jungels and Arcier already. Good luck!

Wow!Missed a lot.
First taking the maglia rosa
Then winning a stage on it
Then losing it.
Then winning another stage.
Then re-taking the maglia rosa
As well as a comfortable lead on the points ranking
What a race for Arcier
