Café Pedro 9: Nein, nein, nein!

I honestly don't see how it could make any difference in your writing. I use word because it is easy, isn't buggy and I can get things done as swiftly as it takes me to write them, not having to worry about the other issues. But I'm not in college, so I don't really know.

Yeah. Word can be a pain in the ass sometimes. I can`t stand formating and so having it done automatically by LaTex would be much nicer. Pfft

Should really learn it before my Master thesis then.

@baseballover: I agree that Word is easy to use. But is sucks when you have like 100 formulas, lots of footnotes, formating etc. And LaTex for example is in especially for scientic writing the best program to use.

It makes a major impact. LaTex is miles ahead, especially when you're using formulas etc. If LaTex is work, Word is kindergarden, so to speak.
Word gets the job done on easier tasks, though. But LaTex is a cut above it, especially scientific texts.

Well I'm not asking my word processor to do formulas, I'm asking it to write down what I type...

Try to write down complex formulas in Word, you'll see what I mean...

Just to be clear, it's not for making calculations, but to write down formulas etc, not to calculate formulas or whatever.

Well like I said, I'm only a Sophmore in high school. All I really use it for is writing essays for English and History, which I think it works fine for.

So, Andy Schleck: has he just been schlecking off on training or does he really schluck that much?

Completely meaningless post, just wanted to use those puns. Sorry, I'll show myself out.

By the way, that guitar I linked to on the previous(?) page; I'll be going for it!

Will start my bachelor thesis soon and consider to write it with programs like LaTex or Lyx instead of Word.

The difference to Word is mainly that it`s no "What you see is what you get" writing but instead "What you see is what you mean".
This at least is 100% correct for LaTex while Lyx is somewhere in the middle.

Does anyone has experience with one of those or knows another program, which is good for a bachelor thesis with lots of formulas and diagrams?

LaTeX is amazing and makes beautiful documents, and is not as difficult to learn as you'd think (unless you start using some of the more complex packages). Given Lyx is LaTeX but a lot more user friendly, I'd suggest going to that first from Word

Indeed, LaTeX creates some beautiful documents and once you'll get used to it you won't go back to Word.

I use MikTex when I'm writing something and even though it doesn't look very user friendly, it is not too hard to use.

And you'll learn LaTeX as you progress on writing your paper while you'll be searching on the Internet how to do this or that and you'll find that most things aren't too hard to do.

I just don't understand how writing becomes beautiful. Isn't the work itself supposed to be the beautiful part?

I don't know what you mean. That you formatted correctly? That the paper is white? That your printer didn't smear the ink? What do you want, pictures of flowers?

And my teacher would probably throw it away and tell me to give her a regular essay.

Cause apparently it has pretty pictures or something. I honestly don't get it. Can I have a comparison or something?

And I honestly don't get it why you are such a die hard Word fan.

Once you try to do a complex document in Word you'll have to put way more work into it that in a LaTeX one once you have learned how it works.
