Giro d'Italia 2011 - Week 1
Brahama
I still can't believe it.
He was such a great guy and cyclist.

You were the best!!! May you rest in peace and ride with Casartelli, Kivilev and all the other riders in Heaven..

I hope that what happened to Weylandt is used by all the race organizations. As Wouter, Casartelli and other riders, F.Schleck, Horrillo who saved by a miracle their lifes... If they have to put a man with a yellow/red flag in each corner... just put one! A human being worth it!!

It was an accident, it could happened anywhere to anyone, no one is at fault for what happened.

I think like you...
Giro organisers don't have blame of this...

I don't think that Pablo Lastras think the same as you. It was an accident, may be WW did a bad move looking back, but it's possible to learn from what happened to make races safer.

Those who witnessed the fall have said that it happened in a pretty straight place, the hairpin was, apparently, some meters away from the place Weylandt crashed. I don't think anything could have been done to prevent this, sometimes shit just happens.

It was sadly Wouters fault probably, combined with bad luck.Looking back at 80km/h going into curve is not safe at all,but he had to do it million times before. As Kumazan wrote - shit happensSad

I woke this morning to check the results of yesterday's stage. I was shocked to see the news about Weylandt. It was so unexpected, I can imagine in the morning him receiving good luck messages from family, thinking it would just be an ordinary day. He had ridden many, many times before. He was a fantastic rider, my thoughts go out to his family and friends, and may he Rest In Peace

Yeah, having read that it made me think about how many times I've looked round on the bike even on descents (admittedly not that fast). It's pretty much all bad luck - pro cyclists must have done that thousands of times.

After such a sad night I am trying to get ovet with it, I can't really but I'm trying Sad

Leopard decided to continue Giro. In other news Nordhaug (SKY) is suffering from cold again ( surprise surprise ) and said GC is not on his mind now. He lost 6 minutes yesterday. He will target two finishes and will do his best for Lofkvist ( from his blog ) Carlos Sastre also lost about 1 minute yesterday unexpectedly.

Also there will be minte of silence before the start of the race but the peleton decided to race the stage.

Race the stage? That's rather surprising. I did expect Leopard to continue, but I also thought that the stage would be neutralised Carsartelli-style.

Yeah, I can't imagine them racing.

This morning, Swedish television says that they will do a processional, and let Leopard Trek cross the line first.

Wilier
Kurt Hovelynck (Donckers Koffie) quits cycling after Weylandt's crash. A couple of years ago Hovelynck also had a horrible crash which put him into a coma. Wouter Weylandt was there and called the ambulance, what may likely have saved his life.

Edit: don't know if this is correct thread, but since it's about WW I put it here.

Yeah, procession preceeded with one minute silence.
4 jersey wearers + Leopard cross the finish line together.
Some sort of tribute afterwards.

Thats what i'm hearing.

CW confirm it will be a neutralised stage:

I read on eurosport site that most riders of team leopard trek wanted to leave the race but Wouter's father asked them to continue...

EDIT : Tyler Farrar, one of Weylandt's best friends (they were used to train together in Gand) will leave the giro tonight, after today's race.

Team Europcar !!

RIP Wouter

The race has about 210km, so all teams will do the pace for ~10km.
In the end Leopard will do the pace and lead the peloton over the line.

The stage will of course be neutralised.
