Pluchkin`s GT triple indeed impressive. Though must be said as well that in all 3 he didn`t meet Schleck!
You seem to avoid him anywhere. Hence hard to judge, who of those 2 is the best GT rider. |

Or he avoids us!
Hard to judge ofc, but i think it would depend on the course of the GT. On the pure mountaninous course or even with stage 20 TT about recovery more than TT stat alone, Schleck would dominate him without doubt. But with proper GT route of 100TT kms, where at least 50 of them would be in first week, i think it would be a nice battle.
When climbing is concerned, i think both Schleck and Spilak are superior. That is also the reason why we had to be reasonable and find ways to win GTs that suit him perfectly and those two less (which is seen by their absence).
Maybe future will tell, but i want to brag about him not being beaten in GT in Metinvest colours, so he better win that Vuelta.

Had to check it now:
Stage 1: Stuyven in the break, took KoM
Stage 2: Not in break, Stuyven keeps KoM
Stage 3: TTT, Stuyven keeps KoM
Stage 4: Stuyven in the break, but loses KoM to De Greef, who was in our team the last 2 years
Stage 5: Not in break, no KoM *outraged*
Stage 6: Stuyven in the break, not enough points taken for KoM
Stage 7: Not in break, no KoM *outraged*
Stage 8: Dall'Oste in the break, not enough points taken for KoM
Stage 9: Dall'Oste chasse patate, steals KoM
Stage 10: Dall'Oste in the break, keeps KoM
Stage 11: Dall'Oste in the break, keeps KoM
Stage 12: Dall'Oste in the break, keeps KoM
Stage 13: Not in break, Dall'Oste keeps KoM
Stage 14: Not in break, Dall'Oste keeps KoM
Stage 15: Dall'Oste in the break, keeps KoM
Stage 16: Dall'Oste in the break, keeps KoM
Stage 17: Dall'Oste in the break, keeps KoM
Stage 18: Dall'Oste attacks but doesn't get away, keeps KoM
Stage 19: Dall'Oste in the break, secures KoM
Stage 20: TT
Stage 21: Dall'Oste in the break, finishes in style
So yes, I have to admit the AI favoured me here, in 11 of 19 normal stages, we saw Dall'Oste attack. Add 3 from Stuyven and that's 14 out of 19 for my team. Then again, I did send a team for breakaway wins or KoM jersey, no GC leader and minimal support for my mediocre sprinter, so the AI did recognise my intentions with this team. Which is good, in my opinion.
Also, it's maybe best a PCT team does this, otherwise all these points would've gone to a WT team and it might have been more unfair that way?
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Double feeling about this final result. Of course it's pretty sour to lose second place in a GC with a difference of two seconds because of a fall in stage 1. But on the other hand I think Alarcon was awesome and deserves the success. So that definitely softens the pain.
Overall it was a decent Giro for us. Probably scored a bit less than expected, but at least Madrazo was strong most of the time and managed to avoid being one of the many riders picking up an injury. Winning the TTT was of course a highlight and a boost to team morale. And I'm also impressed with Kangert and Formolo doing well in GC despite the hard work they put in for their leader.
Congrats to Avin! Three GT's in a row is a huge achievement!
And last but not least; thanks for consistently putting out quality reports danny! That's also an achievement that shouldn't be underestimated.

First of all, shout out to sgdanny for turning this quite one-dimensional race into a fun race to read/follow!
Nat. | Name | Fl | Mo | Hi | TT | St | Rs | Rc | Co | Sp | Ac | Fi | Do | Pr | GC | | Kolesnikov, Sergei | 78 | 77 | 72 | 72 | 76 | 74 | 76 | 61 | 70 | 77 | 74 | 63 | 72 | 14th | | Kunshin, Aleksej | 70 | 77 | 73 | 71 | 75 | 75 | 76 | 56 | 68 | 71 | 64 | 62 | 71 | 25th | | Ignatenko, Petr | 69 | 77 | 73 | 71 | 74 | 70 | 74 | 52 | 53 | 63 | 55 | 63 | 71 | 35th | | Novikov, Nikita | 69 | 76 | 72 | 70 | 74 | 71 | 71 | 56 | 62 | 70 | 69 | 67 | 70 | 43th | | Belkov, Maxim | 67 | 76 | 71 | 72 | 71 | 75 | 74 | 68 | 57 | 62 | 58 | 69 | 72 | 70th | | Malori, Adrian | 78 | 61 | 68 | 79 | 74 | 73 | 72 | 58 | 63 | 68 | 70 | 64 | 79 | 115th | | Sulimov, Alexander | 71 | 64 | 70 | 65 | 75 | 70 | 66 | 77 | 63 | 71 | 77 | 75 | 65 | 116th | | Vorobev, Anton | 75 | 63 | 65 | 79 | 73 | 71 | 67 | 50 | 58 | 72 | 81 | 56 | 78 | DNF |
On Tinkoff's point of view: very disappointing; we send a perfect stage hunter/breakaway/KoM team but I think because of the weak startlist Kolesnikov became a GC leader, even after his crashes the AI wasn't in our favor.
So no stage win, only one point total in the KoM and we also weren't able to defend our Team Ranking Title of last year's Giro. Hopefully the Vuelta has a stronger field, because our set up is quite similar to the Giro squad...
And last congratulations Avin, looking at the small gap in the end to Alarcon and Madrazo; Pluchkin clearly saved his legs for the Vuelta.

Your riders (some of them atleast) overperformed in the GC though. Kolesnikov 13 spots above Novak with similar stats, but a better TT. So what was lost in terms of KOM battle, was gained in terms of GC.
We also lost a lot of those stage results we hoped to get from Campero and Novak, whom should both be perfectly suited for attacking in the mountains.

Can we look forward to post-Giro rankings update, or these will come only after ardennes classics?

Congrats Avin, and thanks for the great reports sg danny.
7th and 13th is an amazing result, particularly with the youth jersey. Looking forward to the Tour where I am 90% sure Wellens is riding again.

To be fairly honest, I lost quite a lot of interest when Cattaneo (without explanation) pretty much exited the race. I'd hoped he'd recover just a little bit, so he could go for a stage win or two, but instead he crashed.
A small miracle that Cattaneo made it all the way to the finish, although it was to absolutely no use.
Good showing in the last few stages, but it can in no way make up for the huge disappointment that this race has been for Orange.
Congrats to the winners, though. And thanks to danny for the reports. |

Still missing a few ranking point files for the full month. Hence here the Giro Ranking Update for now!
Metinvest needed a big race and they actually got it even though they surely would have prefered a few more stage results. But Pluchkin having the race lead for several days and except a late loss, got it back to take the main GC points, they are the clear winner point wise!
Behind them also no surprise to see the podium teams Red Bull and Gazelle. First also got some nice stage results from Alarcon. For all 3 teams it is a nice move up from the "relegation zone" at this time of the year.
Stage success by Bpost and Aker in the breakaways move them up nicely in the points as well as they follow eBuddy`s Henao Montoya/Brambilla duo, while Evonik did decently with Van Stayen as main sprinter. And with Aegon yet another promoted team in the upper half of the Giro ranking table thanks to a top10 and two stage wins as well.
Both wildcard teams are in the mix as well without getting the biggest points but the win of the KoM ranking for Lierse gives them some nice (non counting) points.
Meanwhile below Pokerstars and Jayco`z with horrible performances while also PT podium candidates I-Gen and Vesuvio had a low scoring event. Some teams gained less than expected and move towards the relegation zone.
1 | | Metinvest-Dacia | 1284 | 2 | | Red Bull - Huawei | 978 | 3 | | Gazelle | 825 | 4 | | eBuddy | 813 | 5 | | Bpost - Vlaanderen | 711 | 6 | | Aker - MOT | 641 | 7 | | Evonik - ELKO | 640 | 8 | | Aegon - Lavazza | 546 | 9 | | Team Puma - SAP | 535 | 10 | | Pendleton's | 461 | 11 | | Grieg - Eftel | 433 | 12 | | Becherovka - Petrof | 398 | 13 | | Tinkoff Sport Academy | 341 | 14 | | Movistar - US Postal | 317 | 15 | | Bouygues Telecom | 271 | 16 | | RBC Pro Cycling | 225 | 17 | | Kenya Airways - Dimension Data | 223 | 18 | | Orange - KLM Cycling | 192 | 19 | | Vesuvio - Accumalux | 179 | 20 | | Team I-Gen - Festina | 141 | 21 | | Jayco'z Cycling Project | 93 | 22 | | Pokerstars.com | 83 |
Rider wise Pluchkin took 87% of his team`s scoring which is easily the most of all. Similar percentage for Alarcon and Red Bull while Madrazo with ~71% had some more team mates with decent scoring. Still the podium riders take the top spots.
Van Stayen as best non GC rider just a bit below showing that Evonik did well to send him here. Only other non GC rider in the top10 is Guarnieri with important scoring for Grieg Eftel.

Very happy with the points we scored here, even with Guldhammer not in the big GC points. A great GT from Dyrnes really made the difference, but also Holst Enger's bright start to the race, before his crash bonanza started.
Massive race for Metinvest, which was kind of expected, but still great to see Pluchkin deliver for them when he needs to.
Thank you for the update, roturn! |

Thanks for the update roturn, in the end superb point haul for us. Pluchkin yet to fail in his career with us, so hold on Aleksandr and similar Vuelta please.
Btw great Giro for eBuddy, BPost and Aker even without top top GC guys. Evonik also great, but it looked even better in first half, later they faded.

Not the best 1st Grand Tour for RBC but when combined with California it should not look to bad at all for us

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. Was in training camp and wanted to keep the unread threads for a longer catchup.
_____
Guess I can be satisfied with the Giro for my team. Mainly due to the perfect week one which was absolutely fantastic for Evonik. A couple of stage wins and especially the stage win of Dzamastagic was pleasing and was a nice reward for overpaying him as a lvl3 talent as one of my first signings.
Van Stayen was expectedly strong, I'd say his results pretty matched my expectations (which also says a lot about my expectations :P ). I can't blame Van Stayen about the weaker last two weeks as it was mostly down to the lack of support and thus, not catching the breaks. It propably was a big mistake to send Bogdanovics or Lindau instead of a climber as that would have helped us a lot more in the last week.
Losing the point jersey is of course disappointing but we can again only blame the support in the last week that threw away lot of points :/
I'm not happy about the selections of breaks to participate. While i like that Stoltz ( who was in i think 3 breaks ) attacked, it was not so clever to send someone as specialized on flat roads as him on the heaviest mountain stages into the break. I would have prefered to see one of the puncheurs on the hilly stages in a break or possibly even someone like Stoltz or Dzamastagic on the later flat stages to avoid the task of controlling the break when the team was down to 4 men.
A look at the other teams:
- Great to see Pluchkin win. @Avin : you said he was unpopular. Not sure if that's the case as i can only speak from myself but i think it was more of a case that many just wanted to see a thrilling race and not a landslide win as many (me included) expected beforehand. Congrats for the win and good luck in Pluchkin's quest 4 history in the vuelta!
- Alarcon was the most exciting rider to watch imo. Fantastic racing and I'm glad he edged out Madrazo for the runner-up spot as i think he deserved it more
- Bpost and Aker the big winners for me. Quite a few more points than expected.
- Lierse was crazily aggressive. I hope my team will perform similar active in the other two GTs where we lack a sprinter and where we are dependant on stage success if we want to score more than Pokerstars and Jayc'OZ this race.
______
Thanks for the race reports danny. It was a joy to read them and i always counted down the hours to 20:00 daily time!
Also thanks Roturn for the points update.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

That's not enough points Angel...600 was the minimum. Your wage is going to plummet.
Glad the rest of the team scored some nice additional points, otherwise this Giro would've been a big disappointment.
