Cunego looked very strong, so he should be ready to challenge Gilbert during the Ardennes. =)

No more Leakygas
Still, Unicredit is a good sponsor. Cunego looks to be rounding into form quite nicely.

Thanks again for your comments. Indeed, it looks like Cunego can handle the intense training schedule pretty well.
@ Tuco: I asked whether or not you want to keep Liquigas and the vast majority wasn't particularly keen on that But I agree with you, Unicredit is nice.
So, here's the last detailed conti report, then comes AGR.

April 13, 2012 – De Brabantse Pijl
The Brabantse Pijl is the last in a row of six Flamish one day races from late February to mid April. It's usually frequented by lots of strong puncheurs who use it as a preparation for the Ardennes, but punchy sprinters like Oscar Freire, who won the race three times in a row from '05-'07, have good chances here as well.
The course from Zaventem to the Alsemberg features 195 kilometers of almost infinite up and down. Especially in the second half of the race is full of very small, steep hills. The riders will need to be very attentive not to miss the decisive split or attack.

It's hard to tell whether a sprinter or a puncheur will decide the race in his favor. For both probable events, there are a couple of very decent riders here.
Peter Sagan + Damiano Cunego = Win. That is our calculation for today.
It took a long time until a break established itself. Either too many (mostly more than 15) or too strong (e.g. Wout Poels) riders tried their best. Eventually, Matthew Busche accompanied Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil), Egor Silin (Tabriz) and Bert de Backer (Skil) in the BOTD.
They delivered the pack a terrific fight but despite late attacks by Hoogerland and Busche, they were caught with eight kilometers to go. Shortly afterwards, Hoogerland's teammate Lieuwe Westra gave it a try with an attack as well but was soon caught.
Within the last kilometers, Belgian Champion Stijn Devolder was in front with Cunego and Sagan on his wheel. As he made his move, he quickly created a small gap. Cunego just didn't sprint although he was perfectly placed following the Skil rider. Strange behaviour, the Liquigas manager didn't look very happy either.
So Sagan had to challenge Devolder from several bike lengths behind. That turned out to be too much. Devolder saved only centimeters into the finish. Sagan could hold off Jurgen Roelandts, who had an amazing end speed but was simply badly placed.
With an explosive sprint, Stijn Devolder outsmarted the others.

Stijn Devolder had a very good spring. In addition to his win at Dwars Door Vlaanderen, he managed to gain several Top 10s in important races like Milano – San Remo or Paris – Nice. This race is a good sign for the Ardennes, probably his next goal.
Well. We wanted the win here. And it sure would have been possible if Damiano simply followed Stijn Devolder's wheel. The meters the Belgian made in that moments were the decisive ones. At least Peter Sagan again showed his strength and we look forward to the Ardennes optimistically.

Unlucky, Sagan was only just shoryt. And you really gotta get a Belgian national champs shirt for Devolder, I absolutely HATE those generic ones! Haha! |

Unlucky with Cunego and quite weird that he didn't want to sprint - But nice to see Sagan in great shape again. With a better start of the sprint, he would probably have won
I'm really looking forward to Amstel Gold Race

April 17, 2012 – Amstel Gold Race
We're finally here, the big Ardennes classics have arrived. After long weeks of preparation, the puncheurs face their first and probably biggest season highlight. The Amstel Gold Race is the first of the three big races.
32 listed ascents until the big final on the Cauberg – that's the challenge today. The race is 256 kilometers long which doesn't make it easier either.
1 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre - ISD | 2 | Philippe Gilbert | Omega Pharma - Lotto | 3 | Alexandre Vinokourov | Astana | 4 | Fränk Schleck | Leopard - Trek | 5 | Jerome Pineau | Quick·Step |
Liquigas is here with a very strong-looking dual leadership but Philippe Gilbert is the measure of all things, he'll be the one to beat!
Our sponsor goal is to achieve a Top 3, and that's what we aim for. Although we have some hopes for the win as well, we would be pleased with the podium, as Gilbert will be very hard to beat.
A mediocrely strong break including the likes of Ruslan Pidgorny (Vacansoleil) and Gorka Izagirre (Euskaltel) got away early and still led with 5 minutes at 60 kms to go. But soon, the marks of exhaustion became visible and the advance shrinked rapidly.
Quite surprisingly, Philippe Gilbert opened the battle of the favorites with a very early attack at the 40 kms sign. Not everyone followed, but the main group splitted and only the real contenders remained there. Unfortunatly, Damiano Cunego had a terrible day and had to leave Peter Sagan on his own.
During the next 20 kilometers, the favorite's group slowly decreased, one after another dropped as they overtook all the escapees. Philippe Gilbert was again in there, no rider was alone in front. Within the last 15 kms, the likes of Vinokourov, Rodriguez and Andy Schleck all tried to attack without success. A sprint from the front group, consisting of 12 riders, would decide the race.
In that sprint, Alexandre Vinokourov and Luis Leon Sanchez were in the front row but soon, Gilbert shot in between them like a rocket and left them in the dust. Only one rider could, more or less, follow him: Peter Sagan. But nothing could help against Gilbert today. He wins with an impressive performance. Sagan keeps the second spot, a great result, and fulfills the sponsor goal. More than three and a half minute behind the winner, Damiano Cunego leads the first chasing group over the line, finishing 13th.
Gilbert and Sagan both live up to the high expectations.

Philippe Gilbert came here with the goal of winning the Ardennais triple. 1/3 achieved in a dominant way!
Our sponsor goal was to achieve a Top 3 and Peter Sagan managed to do that, therefore, we're very happy. Gilbert was simply unbeatable today. Damiano Cunego had a very, very bad day and couldn't live up with the expectations, but if that was his one bad day, we can live with that. |

Great 2nd for Sagan! Maybe he even would have a chance to win, if Cunego have had a better day to support him.. anyway:

2nd place is a very good result. Nothing to do about Gilbert, that's normal.

Great race for Peter Sagan! 2nd behind Gilbert is not bad, certainly not when Cunego couldn't help him
