Love Yechezkel as my former talent. Looks like he may have a chance to ride free sometimes, so excited to see how he does.
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy

I'm curious to see how the Sicard-Penasa combination will work out in PCT. I wish you all the best! Smile

Because of my cap issues I couldn't bring in Kozhatayev or Kiskonen, which is really a shame. Maybe next season we can have better talks!

No training?

It's not a bad team, but it might take some luck and good planning to avoid relegation.

Unfortunately, there wasn't enough money in the budget to justify spending it on training Sad

Well, no one knows for sure how this season will pan out - this team is not world beater, but can use various combinations between Penasa, Sicard, Barta and Pavlic in stage races + have some hilly riders that can also mix and match. The Sprint and cobble sections leave more to be desired TBH. Even if I get relagated, it won't be the end of the world Smile

Quite a lot of cleaning up to do next season. I do agree that Sicard is a good signing this season, but I think you could have gotten almost the same from Kozhatayev.

Some teams seems to do a lot of changes each season, but not necessarily with a plan in mind before the transfers. I do kinda get that feeling when I look at the outcome.

I could see you be in for a rough season tbh - but I hope I'm wrong. I just struggle to see any aspect in which your team excel. Penasa as the standout rider could have worked if you had 6-7 riders at the level of Sicard, but it seems as if the leaders of your team are the level below that. I suspect you have A LOT of racedays un-used, which is usually not the best sign. I have the same issue btw Wink

Month 1 recap

With the January portion now complete for us, let's make a recap the events from the races we've entered:

Tour Down Under

Tour Down Under was a race where we've sent two of our top hilly riders in Velasco and Robov, but neither did anything worth of note. Instead, the youngsters we took on loan deals shined. The opening stage saw Renus Uhiriwe taking the KoM lead - a lead that he held for the majority of the race and ended up 3rd in this ranking, which gave him a solid points haul to start the season. Husein Selimovic had also entered into a breakaway group on the following stage, which saw him 2nd in the U25 standings for a while. Aleks Bechkov also took part in a break in Stage 5. Overall though it wasn't a good race for us, but at least the youngsters took part in the breakaways.

Grade: C-

Hong Kong Challenge

An early season race this team has took part in every edition and in which we've performed well. In this small 3-day race we've entered veteran rider Romain Sicard and as an insurance policy we've sent William Barta in his first race back with the team. Stage 1 saw both riders along with Burkina Faso NC Bachirou Nikiema finish with the leading group as everyone is aware that the next stage - a TT, is a make or break stage. Nikiema isn't that good on TT so it was natural to fall down. Our top TT specialists - Pokälä and Kittel, finished in the Top 25. Barta and Sicard did decently enough for a potential GC Top 10 shot after the final stage. In the end, the French veteran showed that he still has something left in the tank by finishing 2nd on the final stage and in a final sprint no less. This allowed Sicard to jump to 7th, while Barta, who finished some 11 seconds later, kept his Top 10 position. In a race where our performance has been consistent for the most part, we see it as a win and will surely boost the morale.

Grade: A

Great Ocean Classic

On the other end of the spectrum however is the Great Ocean Classic. This team is not built for sprints and it shows - we got exposed. Our best finishing rider - Renus Uhiriwe all the way down in 37th. At least he and Matis Louvel (40th place) got some ranking points in a race where we were poorly prepared, but that's hardly warming us.

Grade: F

Team considering shutting down?

With the final of the 2023 MGUCI season in sight the pro-rel picture becomes very clear. For the Genii Hyundai N team it almost mean a near certain relagation and possibly finishing dead last in the division. Now, even darker clouds loom over the team as IESE, parent company of the team is considering taking a break from the MGUCI as the recent performances have apparently didn't please major shareholders within the organization.

Ivaneurope was not yet reached out for comment on the situation, but GM Petar Panayotov shed some light over the speculations that the team could be shutting down in the short-term "As far as we are aware, nothing has been finalized yet and we're await the decision of ivaneurope since he's the CEO and has the final say. At the present moment we've all agreed that our fate in the PCT division has been sealed a long time ago."

Clive Ebejer, who is vice-president of cycling operations has been asked on whether poor results are the reason behind considering disbanding the team and starting from scratch, had this to say - "Of course that he's been upset about the lack of consistency in the result and the fact that some riders had underachieved. For every manager here winning is important and I can't blame him that he may resort to extreme measures. But by disbanding and starting over from a 'blank canvas' he'd be at a greater disadvantage and I sincerely hope ivaneurope will find a reasonable solution".

So far none of the riders has commented on the situation

Team Update - a final decision will be made after Lugano?

There have been talks about the Genii - Hyundai N Cycling potentially ceasing to exist as IESE consider to end their involvement in the MGUCI. Ivaneurope, IESE's CEO was not present at the Tour of Britain, nor was GM Petar Panayotov, but Clive Ebejer was in his role of vice-president of cycling operations and rider development to oversee the development of Jaakko Siilankorva and two of the loanees in Husein Selimovic and Aljaz Jarc. He shed some light on the situation.

"At the present time there hasn't been a word from IESE's board of directors on the situation, but there is some anxiety from both the riders and the internal staff that their jobs will be gone. The morale presently is as low as it could get, but we've heard that an update will be made after Lugano GP"

The news regarding an announcement or update at the Lugano GP seems odd as the team has been confirming plans after the conclusion of the season - Tour of Japan and Euskal Bizikleta are the last remaining races of the season and an announcement that the team could potentially disband could tank the morale even further even if the team's ranking doesn't change.

Selimovic encourages IESE boss to 'Not give up'

Husein Selimovic has been the revelation of the season for the team in his loan year at the team and he has been performing very well throughout the entire season. At Tour of Britain where he finished 7th in the U25 standings, scoring 1 ranking point he was interviewed by the Bosnian media. When asked about the future of his current team (though he'd return to Cedevita after his loan spell ends) he said the following:

"I'm perhaps not the person to influence his decision, but from the bottom of my heart I'd tell to my boss (ivaneurope) to not give up. Failures will only make us stronger and the final result here in Britain is more or less a team effort and should serve him as a motivation to keep going."

Hopefully the last rather more optimistic statements indicate your team will still be around next season! Would be a shame to lose you.

Echo that. Appreciate your long term commitment, even if the team hasn't always lived up to expectations.

What you need is a sponsor who wants to stick around more than a season despite some possible disappointments!

It's been awesome so see Selimovic on the attack all season and be so successful in his debut season. I know Pogacar also appreciates the time he spent with your team at the start of his career. It would be nice if the team could stay intact Smile

Looks like you had the perfect riders to send to Britain, great job you did there! And I do hope this result provides you enough motivation and energy to tackle another rebuild this year - fingers crossed your decisions will be a bit luckier than some of this year's!

Imladrik
Can only echo the others. Probably hard to keep the motivation after disappointing results, but I hope the rebuild can be a new one.

The team's fate has been decided?

Ivaneurope, president and CEO of IESE, was in Switzerland as planned to address rumours regarding the future of his Genii - Hyundai N team after the conclusion of the season. With two events in Japan and the Basque Country to remain, many believed that these races will be the team's last in the MGUCI. Ivaneurope was swarmed by journalists trying to get answers, but were prevented by security who later confirmed that a press conference is going to be scheduled.

And indeed, after the conclusion of the Lugano GP where the team performed decently, the arranged press conference went ahead. Here's what the IESE boss had to say:

"I know that many of you had read the rumours and want to ask your questions. I'd be perfectly clear - the rumours about the demise of this team are overexaggerated. Yes, the team morale wasn't high as both riders and staff felt that the results didn't match the ambitions set at the start. It is totally understandable and I'd be lying if I hadn't consider throwing the towel myself.

I've been in contact with the marketing departments of both Genii Capital and Hyundai Motor Company Europe and they've said that regardless of my decision they'll continue supporting if the team decided to come back later down the line if we choose to exit. Now that I've confirmed our presence in the MGUCI, they've confirmed their commitment. We've also received confirmation by Helly Hansen and DataMap that they will continue their partnership deal. Unfortunately, the deals with Ionos and BWT expire at the end of the season and aren't going to be renewed."

That was just an excerpt from what he said to journalists. There haven't been any news on how the team would be named however with rumours that the team might incorporate Helly Hansen in the team's name. Additionally, several brands have been linked with the team to fill the void left by Ionos and BWT such as Sixt (German car rental company), Betano (Greek betting company, though it is believed that its Bulgarian branch would be sponsor), OKX (crypto company) and even Paramount+ were linked should the team doesn't renew its deal with RTL Group. IESE neither confirmed nor deny the rumours.
