New Riders Suggestions [2023]
Ezeefreak
I would like to have some rider re-evaluated or adjusted: Marius Mayrhofer. This season doing good and winning his first world tour race (Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race). Also doing well so far at the Giro with some good results at more hilly stages. Funnily, i signed him last year but sacked him a bit later because his potential and stats are just kinda useless. I believe he is one of the bigger german talents and has some potential in mountains besides hills too. A bit potential in TT is also that i think he could be at least also decent in stage races.

I would like to have the following adjustments:

So make him less sprinty and versatile and more lead him into a real direction with climbing abilities at hills and mountains and some potnetial in not losing too much time at TT's . This would still make multiple paths possible and him a rider who is worth to be signed (for me at least xD ). I would be glad if my "wish" would be granted

These suggestions primarily target older or existing riders, but I've included two of the bigger Danish talents of the 2001 class. There are quite a lot, so I've got the stat suggestions first with a seperate table for some of the reasoning. The aim with the older riders has been to keep them below the minimum wage threshold.

Inevitably, I have to have made at least a few mistakes somewhere. The most obvious is in the Level 1 stats of young Frederik Wandahl. They should be as follows.

Now, on to the rest of the Danish class of 2023. First up is Victor Grue Enggaard, who doesn't look like a future world beater. His best result is 7th in the 2022-edition of the Scandinavian Race (1.2) and he currently rides for the Danish continental team Coloquick. I think he ought to grow into a low-tier TTT piece.

Another man without many impressive results in his palmarès is Nicholas Thorøe-Hansen. With the Danish continental team BHS-PL Belton Bornholm he has ridden just 4 UCI race days this year. Last year he managed 2nd in the Mountains and 3rd in the Points at the Tour of Rhodes (2.2) in addition to a Top 10 at the Rhodes GP (1.2). He ought to be capable of growing into a relatively poor rouleur-baroudeur.

Our first decent talent is Anders Foldager. He moved to Italy with continental team Biesse-Carrera and has won in Vendemiano (1.2U23), came 2nd in the Ruota d'Oro (1.2), and scored a podium at Per Semple Alfredo (1.1). In his U23 Cycling Zone interview he self-described as a puncheur with a strong sprint; his best results have come from bumpy parcours which end in somewhat select sprints. He has been signed by Jayco-AlUla for 2024 after riding for them as a stagiaire in 2022. He should present a choice of placing him somewhere on the spectrum from puncheur to sprinter.

Did somebody say Gent-Wevelgem? He only managed 8th in the U23 edition, which is nothing compared to his victory in the U23 Eschborn-Frankfurt, but it suggests that Joshua Gudnitz might have a future as a flandrienne. At least, that's how I have profiled him.

Robin Juel Skivild rides on the track as well as the road, representing Danish continental team Leopard Togt in the latter. His palmarès are limited to Mountain jerseys in the Valle d'Aosta (2.2U23) and Poitou-Charentes (2.1) with the addition of some decent results in pursuit events. I think a future as a stage race domestique is most suitable.

Another rider without much going for him currently is Kasper Viberg Søgaard. His best results have come in flat stages, including a stage win in the amateur Randers Bike Week, so his development should look at targetting those sorts of parcours.

Filippo Colombo: https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider...o-colombo1
I suggest an update to his current stats based on results this year (13th Danilith Nokere Koerse, 50th RVV, various other decent classics results) with a shift towards being a cobbles domestique with a decent sprint. I'd also propose changing him from lvl 1 to lvl 3 w/ potential 4.

Kevin Kuhn: https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider...kevin-kuhn
I'd just ask to bump his stats a little and advance him from lvl 3 to lvl 4.0. No great results or anything, but it would be helpful to have a rider worth signing as a potential climbing domestique rather than a dud.

Felix Stehli: https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider...tehli/2022
He had a pretty good season with a bunch of top 10's in hilly stages/small group sprints. I think he should get a stat boost and should go from lvl 1 to lvl 2.

I'll just reiterate my suggestion from last season and request a stat bump to make him a rider worth signing rather than a dud in the DB. I think he'd be fun to have as a Sprint/PRL guy. Suggested/Track-SPR:

One more Irish suggestion- Aaron Wade. He just won the White Jersey at the Rás. He seemed to be mainly a lead-out man.

He races in Spain normally:

Michal Paluta has transitioned towards cyclocross and mountain-biking rather than developing into the sprinter that was initially predicted. He has ,amaged sp,e relatively impressive results: 1st in the Poland NCRR 2019, Top 10 at Villafranca de Ordizia 2021 (1.1) and in a stage of the Tour of Britain 2021 (2.Pro). Given he'd never be more than a leadout man nobody is going to pick up a 28 year old Level 3 talent. I propose transitioning his skillset towards a cobble-climbing domestique and bumping him up a level.

The only other free agent from the 1995 class still going is Tobias Pawlak. He doesn't have many significant achievements to his name, but managed 5th at In the Steps of Romans 2022 (2.2) and 6th in the Tour of Szeklerland 2021 (2.2). I've mostly just looked at bumping him up to a Level 4 rider, combining elements of the Hills and Track-TT trainings to create a puncheur-domestique.

I don't see anything interesting happening with the 1996 riders so we move on to Artur Sowinski. He has done well for himself with 7th in the Memorial Henryka Lasaka 2021 (1.2) and 4th overall in the Tour of Malopolska 2022 (2.2). Looks to me like he's panned out into a low-level climber, but not quite to the extent that he currently exists in the database.

I don't know about anybody else but I think it would be great to see Alan Banaszek being led out by his cousins Adrian Banaszek and Norbert Banaszek. Adrian is the older of the two; he came 5th in Puchar Mon 2021 (1.2), 4th in the Tour of Szelkerland 2021 (2.2), 5th in the Memorial A. Trochanowskiego 2022 (1.2), and has had some decent results in prologues. Norbert is more talented. He won the sprint classification in the Baltic Chain Tour 2021 (2.2) and the Poland NCRR 2022, this year his best result has been 5th in the GP Adria Mobil (1.2).

I'm not sure if Marceli Boguslawski was just added to the database last season his myriad of excellent performances in prologues and sprints at the .1 and .2 level suggest he is deserving of a bit of an upgrade. His overall victories in 2022 include Dookola Mazowsza (2.2), GP Polski Via Odra (1.2) and GP Nasielsk-Serock (1.2). He fits into the hill-sprinter archetype with the added bonus of an excellent ability on the TT-bike, if only in short stretches.

The twins Tomasz and Marcin Budzinski seem somewhat hard done by. Tomasz won the Memorial Henryka Lasaka 2022 (1.2), came 5th the year before, and was the runner up in the 2022 Solidarnosc Champions (2.2). Thus far this year Marcin has come 2nd in the Tour of Malopolska (2.2) and 5th in the Istrian Spring Trophy (2.2). A small upgrade should make them viable as mountain domestiques.

Jakub Murias hasn't exactly produced a trove of excellent results; his best effort was 2nd at the 2021 GP Slovakia. He has shown he can handle some hills while also have enough in the tank to manage a decent sprint. Certainly better than the completely useless state he is currently in. His new form, when maxed, might be able to provide a leadout even on slightly undulating stages.

He has also managed to podium on two stages of Belgrade Banjaluka 2022 (2.1) and with the hills removed came 3rd overall in 2023 (2.2). Szymon Krawczyk is no longer riding but Piotr Pekala is. He's managed one Top 5 and five Top 10s in .2 races over the past four years. Unlike Krawczyk, Pekala's specialty seems to be climbs. He lacks significant results in TTs of decent length, but because Poland seems to be lacking true stage race domestiques that's the mold he's being assessed for.

Finn Fisher-Black is my pick to replace George Bennett as New Zealand's premier stage racer. A nice transition from one Nelsonian to another. In 2021, Finn won the Istrian Spring Trophy (2.2) and came 4th in the Belgium Tour (2.Pro). His neo-pro year was hampered when he broke his leg in a crash in the Boucles de la Mayenne. His individual results as a sophomore have been hampered by the number of strong climbers higher than him in the internal hierarchy but his return to form was shown when he won a stage in the Giro di Sicilia (2.1), securing 4th in the General Classification and 1st in the Youth.

The other big name coming from (little) down under is Reuben Thompson. He has been promoted to Groupama-FDJ's World Tour squad after two very impressive years in their U23 ranks. He's managed numerous podiums and Top 5s in .2 and .2U23 races with the highlights being 5th in the 2022 Baby Giro (2.2) and winning the 2021 Valle d'Aosta (2.2U23). He lacks Finn's time against the clock and hasn't performed quite as well against the professional peloton but Reuben is undeniably a good climbing talent.

Logan Currie came 4th when he represented NZ at the 2022 World Championship ITT-U23. His man strength appears to be against the clock but he is able to avoid giving up too much time on inclines. He's performed decently in a variety of European .2 races, scoring a Top 5 and two Top 10s. Trying to avoid giving him the capability to fit into the Kämna/Dunbar role; a TTer who can survives the climbs not an out-and-out stage racer.

For the most part Josh Kench seems like a lesser version of Currie, except he came 2nd in the 2022 Lillehammer GP (1.2). This suggests that he fits into a niche that is extraordinarily difficult to fill with fresh MG talents: the puncheur-TTer.

Kristian Aasvold was originally part of the DB and given in 2021 he scored 5th at the Arctic Race of Norway (2.Pro) and 6th at the Tour of Norway (2.Pro) it seems bizarre that he was culled when Ole Forfang, who hasn't raced since 2019, was not. His current team describes him as a puncheur who favors stage races and performs strongly when a succession of short climbs thins the group to a reduced sprint. I've worked off of his previous iteration although the promised talent for the cobblestones never emerged.

Sæmundur Gudmundsson had a career lasting from 2017-2020. He twice represented Iceland in the European Junior RR but did not finish on either occasion. He didn't race in 2019 but participated in the domestic circuit in 2020. Given his best result of 6th came in the criterium he has been designated as a sprint leadout.

Eipor Eiriksson is still riding, although his only result this year has been a DNF in a .12 race in the Netherlands. He was the 7th best junior on the road in 2017 but improved enough to pick up two podiums in the 2020 domestic circuit. He has represented Iceland in 2 U23 and 1 Jr European competitions, failing to make the time cut in the RRs and finishing last in the ITTs. In the 2021 U6 Cycling Tour (NE) in Sweden he performed well (relatively) against the clock but lost significant time in the road stages. Perhaps something of a prologue specialist?

The best has been saved for last: Kristinn Jonsson. He hasn't been able to upset Kristofer Gunnlaugsson in the domestic circuit just yet but things change once they leave the country. Where they have both attended the U6 Cycling Tour (NE) the younger lad is mostly able to keep with the peloton where the older one can not. Jonsson participated in the 2021 U23 World Championship RR. He has spent spring of 2023 riding in Sweden as the domestic circuit usually comes in the summer months. Younger (presumably) brother Davíð Jónsson (2004) might yet prove to be an even greater talent but the hole left by the decline of Ingvar Omarsson needs to be filled.

Zana's stats in the DB are far from what he's shown in recent times in the MG and I think that he should recieve an update. Should it be as big as the one I am suggesting, I am not entirely sure, but with his current results he should be an attractive rider. He rode a decent Giro with a stage win and some great offensive showings. Won CZ Tour and most recently has won Tour de Slovenie.

Had a strong display towards the backend of last season with multiple top 5s in 1 day races as well as an 11th place in Lombardia, could compromise the main stats a bit with some more energy stats I suppose.

Also I'd argue against adding Tiberi to the DB due to IRL reasons but I can understand if people will otherwise, my compromise would be to add a different Italian rider with his potential etc.

Yes next year should be much better, another rider to remember is Gleb Syritsa; winning Trofeo Arvedi beating Giovanni Lonardi and Nicolas David Gomez is quite something!

I would like to suggest Maksym Bilyi from Ukraine, however I have no access to a working Excel currently to try and make stats for him that make sense.

https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider...ksym-bilyi

He's the new national Ukrainian champion, seemingly having won from a break, solo. His earlier results show he's decently competent at hilly terrain, so I would suggest adding him as a rider quite similar to Gladysh perhaps. Also the only Prolgue he seemingly did was rather okay, so perhaps trade Gladysh's sprinting skill for some TT/PRL?

Another rider I'd like to suggest is Kyrylo Tsarenko (https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider...renko/2022)

He's won the Tour of Bulgaria last year, and this year he's done well in some Italian hilly race. 2021 U23 NC ITT in Ukraine, but no recent TT results. I'd suggest adding him as a rider similar to Rikunov/Papanov/Zouzou, maybe with less MO and higher HI.

There are also 2 talents from 2002 - Serhii Sydor and Andrii Ponomar. There is no need to add them now, I'll keep an eye on their performances Smile

He has amassed 12 wins primarily in bunch sprints from what I can tell in Italian national races and youth races since 2021. He's currently riding for Colpack - Ballan. By the time he maxes the likes of Bonifazio etc will be on declines so there should be room in the DB, I reckon this is a bit over his actual ability and might need to be toned down just a little bit, but I will let the clever heads focus on that one.

Warre Vangheluwe is a cobbled-sprinter from Quickstep's development team that has a monster sprint on him, beating Tim Merlier to the punch in Gullegem - Koerse this year. Furthermore he has two third place finishes in Omloop u23.

He is a good roleur with also a good TT. He is also able to do well at shorter hills. But lacks sprint and climbin (also downhill because he just doesnt ride for so long). I think that suits his rl profile pretty well and if someone is able to max lvl him before decline he should be a really good TT in the end with some possibilities at classics.
With this stats and skillset he should be already useful from the start and not become op at the "end". Would be nice to see him in the game.

What are the odds Wout van Aert gets a (big) update if he becomes a free agent? I really want to give him a chance to shine, but if not I prefer to just keep him as a prologue specialist.

I would assume that they're very small when it is a rider released by a team that isn't disbanding and I also dont think that we have done reworks of released riders for a few years now.

Below is current/proposed/cobbles training:

Johnathan Bogli: https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider...than-bogli
Went unsigned last season because his stats were not worth investing in. Here's what I suggested last season and I think a slight bump to his stats and potential would make him worthwhile. Proposed/Pot 5, Climberv1:

Had some pretty good results this season in hilly stages/1 day races. Proposing a stat increase/maxing out (went unsigned last season).

Valentin Darbellay: https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider...-darbellay
Won the Triptyque Ardennais with a couple of stage podiums. Also with several other top 10 results in stage races/1 day races. I think he'd make a good stage race domestique/breakaway guy.

Antoine Aebi: https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider...toine-aebi
Won a couple of 1-day races and has some other decent results throughout the past couple years. I think he'd make a good hilly race/breakaway guy.

Jan Sommer: https://www.procyclingstats.com/rider...jan-sommer
Won the PRL of the Istrian Spring Trophy, beating out some pretty decent riders. I'd add him as a young TT/PRL talent.

Nothing new from my side, but I'd like to support Bushwacker's case here. Some of the Swiss riders added last year definitely need a bump, or they can be removed altogether, as they're just useless with their current skillset.
Unfortunately, there isn't any Swiss born in 2001 who should be added as a big talent, guess we'll have to wait for those starting with 2002 - but starting from there seem to be quite some good prospects Smile

Derek Gee has showcased a lot of great racing this year, with a lot of willingness to chase stages as well as performing well in cobbled races as well, but turning him into a stage hunter with his current state of the DB I think would be something to consider.
