irony that the splits put Ganna behind by 3"...impressive but not really clever

Van Aert absolutely smashed the opposition. Wonder if the effects of having better support in these races (Benoot, Laporte afterwards) will change his fortunes.

Great opening race for the Belgians. NC Van Aert showing who´s boss and ´smart´ racing by the ag2r boys GVA and Naesen, with a very strong/unlucky Campenaerts in fifth. Too bad Wellens and Vanmarcke were out. Colbrelli looks ready for the classics season again as well, strong comeback when Benoot ´opened´ the finale for real.

The new Jumbo-Visma looked incredibly strong, while Quick Step was no where to be seen.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Crazy finish in Kuurne. I really thought the breakaway had it once it got into the final few km. Jumbo did a good job disrupting the chase for a while. But enough teams kept their powder dry for the final leadout to just time it right and overtake them.

Arkea with 3rd, 4th and 7th, bold strategy for UCI points which luckily paid off.

They've been performing really well indeed. Shame for Lotto Pfft What I noticed on PCS was Vauquelin being in the Benoot attack/group in KBK. Interesting, as he's still very young (2001) and recently finished 2nd in the queen stage in Oman on a difficult climb. Seems like he's able to climb, punch and with a top-50 in both Omloop and KBK he can't be the worst on the cobbles either. Definitely a name to keep an eye on.

Just found this: https://firstcycl...mranking=1

It's the current ranking, with the first 18 teams ensuring a WT status for the next three seasons if I understand correctly. I do think Alpecin will want to remain PRT though, so there's a very close battle for that 19th spot. Arkea already in the top-15 and with Quintana they should have someone to score big in the GT's as well, so they are well on their way to becoming a WT team indeed. (Don't know when the latest update of the ranking was though, but I expect it gets regular/instant updates)

I admit that I rarely followed those early-season classics, but I'm definitely surprised by how many of those races so far were won by mid-range/late attacks. There was a bunch sprint in K-B-K, but otherwise there were solo wins - out of a smaller group or "truly" solo - or a small group getting through like today.
Why is this? Has it become so hard to control the race? Or is this a usual pattern in those races?

Trentin obviously not an unexpected winner at all in Le Samyn, but it must suck for Belgium to lose the race to the two foreigners in the group ^^

Not sure what you mean here, only Kuurne has a reputation of being a sprinters race. Both Omloop and Samyn are tough races that very rarely finish in a sprint with a big group.

I can't speak for the whole of Belgium, but I'm quite happy with Trentin as a winner. He's always there in the cobbled races and really deserved to win sth for a while now Smile

Well, over the week-end I watched the races in France and caught the rest on replay. I really love how Brandon McNulty rides this start of the season and that showed itself at Faun-Ardèche Classic. Awesome long attack rewarded in the best way possible.

I loved even more Juan Ayuso at La Drome Classic the next day. Although that is bitter-sweet since I think Vingegaard showed his greater experience there and Ayuso ended spent before the final km and couldn't challenge the win. Nonetheless I loved his style, but then again I already did that before this season. That was also on display yesterday at Trofeo Laigueglia, but there UAE Team's prowess reared its head, they had 3 riders on the podium.

Last, I enjoyed Matteo Trentin's win at Le Samyn, but that brought forth the sad memory of him losing the World Championship in 2019. In my opinion he would have deserved that one.

Very impressive ride by Asgreen right now. I totally misjudged him I guess. I know this is gravel, but I didn't think he had the climbing ability to excel in a race like Strade.

Asgreen was strong today, won't say it was a surprise to me though. Did pick him for Velogames.

Pogačar showed true class, legendary ride. Not to mention Alejandro comeback for 2nd, the 41 years old still dangerous again and again.

It’s a shame Olav Kooij doesn’t have a proper lead out at the races he is taking part, the kid has an insane top speed for his age. He’ll become world class for sure.

Yeah, but the real shame is he's not riding any classics.

So many dropouts at Paris-Nice due to influenza, bronchitis or sinusitis. Never seen something like this, effects from two years of social distancing/mask wearing reducing immune system levels? All riders tested negative for Covid.

Ollfardh
Not sure if it's more than before Covid, this was always a period where riders got sick.

Can't remember when the last time I saw two Americans on the same podium in a European race before this year, and now it's happened twice in a few weeks.

Great win from Alaphilippe’s doppelgänger at Paris-Nice today.
