Quintana looking 60 years old and now also with kneepain of a 60 year old.

Unsurprisingly, Quintana is going to sit out of the Vuelta. He's also lodging appeal with CAS, standard claim "I didn't take any Tramadol, i don't know how it got into my bloodstream twice".

Worth keeping an eye on this case, as it's the first real test of the UCI's anti-tramadol rules (which sit outside of WADA regulations, who do not ban tramadol).
Partly to see if CAS does find the rules to be overreaching. Partly to see what specific defence Quintana brings, as Tramadol is not available to purchase over the country in France. Real risk here for Arkea's team doctor, or even the team itself given France's extreme anti-doping regulations.

Very interesting to see what comes of this. Not a doping issue I guess, but similar effect when it erases Quintana's 6th place, which was quite an achievement for him after some down years.

Carapaz confirmed at EF for 2023, not a big surprise but it’s funny the timing of the announcement, right at the start of La Vuelta.

Then Jumbo announces van Baarle (ridiculous team for the classics) and Kelderman (Crashobank perfect fit).

We also have a new hour record holder, but he's not even a professional cyclist. Congratulations to Daniel Bigham!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Samuel Mugisha, a 24 year old cyclist from Rwanda, cycling for ProTouch and winner of the Tour of Rwanda in 2018, has been reported missing in the United States after he was about to race the Maryland Cycling Classic there yesterday. He got to the airport, but didn't take the transfer to the hotel (instead used his own transport), but also didn't show up at the hotel and the race. His team and the organization of the race have now reported him missing. Very strange story.

Dark clouds are looming over Jumbo - Visma as the owner of the supermarket chain (who among other things sponsors the Dutch speed skating team and F1 champion Max Verstappen) is jailed for money laundering. Wonder how much the cycling team will be impacted as it seems to be Jumbo's crown jewel at the moment.

It's a shocking and interesting case. For now he has temporarily stepped back to focus on this issue. Would be a shame if he's pleaded guilty, mainly because of his involvement in cycling and racing (Max Verstappen, Rinus Veekay, but also Racing Team Nederland in the endurance championships, in which he himself drives as well). But if he's guilty he should of course be punished. In that case it'll be interesting to see whether Jumbo will continue sponsoring the cycling and racing team (Max and Rinus are save, because they've got plenty of sponsors and a contract).

Juraj Sagan will retire at the end of this season and the world championship was his last race. I always kind of feel sorry for him that he didn't have half the talent his brother has. His only victories were winning the national championships of Slovenia four times, nothing else. I do appreciate the loyalty between Peter and Juraj. They always cycled together in the same team, Peter always took him to his next team. I think he's been very important to Peter and his success.

all in all Juraj was a good and reliable domestique, spent thousands of kms at the front of the peloton.

Sad reminder that this weekend we will see the last ever races of Gilbert, Valverde and Nibali.

2022 really is the year that will make me feel old.

Mikel Nieve and Tanel Kangert will also be riding their final races this weekend. I remember Nieve’s win in a crazy, incredibly designed Giro stage in 2011, still riding for the original Euskaltel team. Wonderful memories. Kangert was a key domestique for Nibali’s Giros in 2013 and 2016, his pace ending Chaves’ pink dream. When Chaves was still a GT contender. Yep, I’m old.

And yet, the biggest loss is unquestionably Rebellin

If you're going to start a Womens cycling programme, might as well make your first signing possibly the most decorated female cyclist of the last, idk, 6 years?
Pauline Ferrand-Prevot officially (heavily rumoured for at least a week or two) joins Ineos. Lets see who else pops up and how this shakes up the womens peloton.

Also, Quintana vs UCI first day at CAS is today as well. We won't get any results for a while yet but just an fyi

One of the best female cyclist of the decade, it is a shame she did not get as much media attention as deserved (outside France, at least).

I am still wondering what team is crazy enough to bet on Quintana; not that is not a good cyclist, but the image he comes with is not the best at the moment.

I don't think this is a fight for Nairo on the basis of securing another leading contract to race, but more protecting his legacy as a GT winner. There's now an * against his results, and at this point in his career that will be more valuable than any possible PCT "legend" contract offer.

This type of last week make me think that the first two weeks will be a waiting game.

Rumours say that Miguel Angel Lopez is trying to break his contract with Astana. I wonder who is nuts enough to offer him a contract if this is true.

Shonak
Might be here in his right since Astana had issues to pay salaries I think?
