Spoiler @Aquarius - Thanks! Yeah top 10 is a minimum expectation, we barely missed out with a worse team and (hopefully) worse managing last year. though of course CT is much stronger now. It is good to have four terrains with good scorers, then also Jams picking up points hopefully.
@Booker - Thanks a lot mate! Yeah we sure do hope to be up there with the "big two" but there's a whole host of other teams who could be there. I guess it's just having multiple scorers vs a few big ones, as some of those top guys score way more than anybody else. 3rd would be a suitable place for my team, as anybody who saw last year's HQ would have seen

The time has come now that we can officially present to you our schedule for the season. The format for CT was, of course, changed slightly this year meaning the C2HC schedule is now mandatory in the vein of the PT races for PT teams. The decreased calendar elsewhere meant we actually had to go to C1 races. On the plus side, this has meant two more African classics as well as a home race for Jamalidin Novardianto. As you'll notice we also confirmed our fifth goal will be to win our home race of Gisborne GP rather than Bayern-Rundfahrt, in one of the least surprising options ever. So, without further ado:

Loved the detailed breakdown and analysis of the squad for 2017 season mate. Roux in particular could be a stand-out rider this CT season, a real danger man. Good luck when the racing gets started.

I see we've managed to avoid each other in the C1 races, although you did pick de Panne which was my backup to not getting the races I wanted. Kigali was another backup . See you in Cuba very soon!

Hours before the Xero team presentation, men and women in Octagon polo shirts usher skinny young men with muscly legs into an electrically colourful room, a few at a time. Some look bemused by the whole act, some are mucking around and some are already cheerfully chatting with our cameraman. The background is blue with streaks of red, white, light blue, green and red, just as with their jerseys. The props are there - the bikes, the bouncy balls, the deck of cards, the team caps. This isn't the madhouse it might look like, but it isn't your average team photoshoot either - Octagon have really done their best to show us the happy, playful side of their eponymous team. After their photoshoots, we sat down with them for some interviews.

'Call Pluchkin!' somebody shouts from behind him. The diminutive Venezuelan in front of us smiles whilst the others around him laugh.
'Yeah, we keep in touch every so often after I left Metinvest. I was there for only a year but in the Tour and Giro you get to know people pretty well. He's a bit steely but a nice guy and congratulated me when I signed here. We had another chat this year when he signed for Nemiroff - I asked him to send me a bottle!' Jonathan Salinas explains.
'I really enjoyed my first year at Xero. It did get tough,' he admits, 'but it always was in my first year of leading. I've still got 5 more years maybe at this level but already i feel in a good environment and matured. The mountain squad now with Igor and George also relieves some of the pressure on me.' Salinas was the team's top scorer last year, ranking 21st in the CT, and delivered two of the team's best individual rides in his 2nd in the Tour of Bulgaria and heroic ride to the team's only win last season in the Middle East. But there were also low points. 'It's never nice failing like I did in Southland, for example.' he says wistfully. The Venezuelan arrived at his team's joint biggest race of the year with the huge task of winning, but couldn't crack the top 10 in a huge dissapointment.
But this year he's 27, had a year of leading and has the accompaniment of friendly rival last year turned co-leader/buddy Igor Antón and Kiwi George Bennett in the mountains. By the MGUCI ratings he'd be second in line but all three insist that they're a triple threat, with Bennett leading in some races potentially.
On the arrival of even stronger climbers in CT: 'It's very scary but also an honour to race against Eastman, Suaza, Penasa and all those very strong guys... we'll be underdogs but will just attack and play off of each other and try deliver results others may not expect.'
On the new kit: 'I'm not usually too fussed by it but it does feel and look quite nice... Marv seems to be happy so it's good sign [laughs].
- Dylan Kennett -
After Rio 2016 Dylan Kennett was a sought-after name by the local media but also by a representative of the Xero Racing p/b Octagon team, who asked him to, right after his track exploits, to do some testing on the road. Despite not being allowed to pre-sign at this late stage the team encouraged him to put his name forward for free agency. The team expected more competition, and maybe Kennett is a little dissapointed they didn't get it.
'Yeah more teams wanting me would've given me more wage [laughs]. Nah but in all seriousness, I'm glad I'm here now with little fuss. It's a good feeling to have a contract already for a full season with the pros. I can't wait.' he says, smiling broadly.
He's quite tall compared to his climbing peers in the team but is still below 6ft at 178cm and almost a head shorter than new teammate Stijn Vandenbergh. But he's built for sprinting and prologues which he hopes to translate to the road. 'That's the easy part!' he laughs, 'it's more about the long road races, but I've been doing some with track my whole life and since August have been doing a lot - I've been getting maybe too tired for the start of the season but I feel ready for the road. 100%. Bring it on!'
On his future on the track: 'I know it's always there for me but right now I'm focused on the road, at least when I'm with the team. I won't be able to train and do all the races for the track but I'll keep it up and meet up with the squad sometimes. But it is on the side for now with a full-time road contract.
On climbing: 'Mountains? Hell no! I'll leave that to George and co. I'd barely make the time cut. Hills yes, I can power over small ones I guess. But that's in juniors I can just make it. So pros I'll be dropped there too!'
- Egidijus Juodvalkis -
He could have been in a Baltic boy band but he chose cycling - that's how his teammates describe Lithuanian road race champion Egidijus Juodvalkis. The climber has spent a few years as a journeyman now but looks forward to another season at a new team just as much as any.
'I think Xero is a great place to be for any climber really - I'm not a leader here but it's great to be right hand man to those guys and ride for Igor again - I was happy that we could both agree contract at the same team.' he says, smiling. He seems to have made fast friends at the team and settled in - he's in amongst the ball throwing and playful tackling of the photoshoot.
Although not the most talked about signing of the window by any measurement at Xero Egidijus is certainly a much-needed lieutenant in the mountains for the three leaders, as the team previously had only really pace-pushers. He is a bit daunted by the new levels of competition but hopes to thrive, more than he did last year even.
'I think that the squad and I are still competitive in these riders and I know I'll be giving it everything for them. That is my job and although maybe I will go for my own chances it's all about putting the team first and that's something I will be doing every day this year and hopefully next year too for once. Just have to not get sacked or sold this time!'
On Igor Antòn: 'I think even though he's getting older he still has all the fight in him and maybe it's good to be on a team with two more leaders. I like to ride with him so it's good to be here. You'll have to ask him!'
On being the Lithuanian Champion: 'It's obviously a big big big honour to represent my country and it was a very special moment winning the race and pulling on the jersey. But I love my Xero one even more! It will be amazing wearing it this year, I hope I do it good.' |

Xero's new premier man for the hills came in this year after a successful season as part of promoting Strava's hilly squad in the PCT. He had a somewhat disappointing year in terms of results but in the end did valuable work, crashed a wee bit and learned a lot of skills in terms of promoting... if you catch our drift.
'I can't wait to lead a team again - I've loved my time at Strava and before this but I felt I have a few years left at the top of my game and a move to CT felt right no matter how cool the PT would have been as well.' he says, smiling. 'I think I have a great squad with me here this season and I look forward to battling new young guys like Chaves and cycling legends like Cunego. I'm very excited for the season ahead.'
The Frenchman has the ticker up there with the best and is looking forward to the longer races. In the CT there isn't as many of them, which could limit his advantage in that area. But Roux has plenty of other skills, not least his fighting spirit and attacking punch which Xero sporting director Jackson Hughes has described as 'perfect for the team.'
'I think that I could do quite well in the continental tour and I'm working with great guys in the hills this year. My goal for the season is to maybe get a win, obviously the Gisborne race is very important as a win goal for the team. Tour de San Luis is a big one but it's probably Tom [Diggle] leading that one - so really just consistent scoring and having a go at every race.'
On leading with Tom Diggle: 'Yes obviously I mean it seems that I am probably our main leader but it's a race by race thing - I think with his time trial abilities he'll probably be our leader in stage races like San Luis and his home tour in Britain. I look forward to a double attack with him.'
On his favourite food during a race: 'In a classic you can't beat a muesli bar or maybe some sweets like coated almonds - I think the Kiwis call them lollies? Stage races the same but usually I like pasta between stages - most do!'
- Marvain Tognama Kossohorou -
Xero's "ultra-domestique" is right in the thick of the fun at the team photoshoot. 'Let me show you my trick,' he smiles broadly whilst shuffling a pack of cards. This leads rather amazingly onto my point about him being a joker in the pack - he is an invaluable domestique in the hilly, mountain, sprint and team time trial squads for Xero. He's not the only cyclist in the world for the Central African Republic but he's the only one currently contracted with the pros and managed to take out the double at last year's national championships, earning him the National Champion title and a very kick-ass jersey.
'It's an honour to represent my country and I know it means a lot to the people back home that I do it well - we aren't in a great place really with the civil war, it's very scary and I know I don't mean much in the grand scheme of things but there are fans and so it's very special to me that I do well for them,' he says. 'This jersey here looks very nice like our main kit but it means so much beyond that and so I'm very proud to wear it.'
'Last season I had some troubles with crashes and injuries but I did get in some breakaways and most importantly work for the team. I hope it's more of breakaways and helping that crashing this time around! The boys are looking ready and I hope we can promote - I think we can do better than last time but I don't know how much better - but we all will do our best to promote!'
On the new arrivals: 'I think guys like George and Anthony are very good for the team and should get us more points - I should be working hard for them so I'm happy to help them out!'
On Central African cycling: 'there are a few guys I want to come to Xero! [laughs] I think that some of them are good enough but we don't have space right now - extra reason to promote so my mates can join up! we have some talented guys but not as many opportunities for us yet.' |

We take a break from our rider interviews to present our third (well, fourth but not really, sort of, whatever) and final National Champion's jersey for 2017, again from the very talented the_hoyle! It is to be worn by our new signing Egidijus Juodvalkis after his breakaway victory in the Lithuanian National Championships last October.

A big month for us to kick off the year in style with our hill, stage race and sprint squads making their first outings. We also have our first and least important (don't tell the boys that though they're super psyched about it) goal in the Vuelta al Tachira, which we still have to get. 5/5 is the aim, flat races is certainly not the game. Why do they even have roads that are flat. So inconvenient. |

Tachira goal should be achieved "easily". San Cristobal is more difficult, but with a good day for Roux you could also do it. And in Great Ocean, looking at other year's results it can be either a sprint or a late attack, so you should have both sides covered. Good luck!

@Aquarius - Not sure on the easiness of Tachira, should get there but anything can happen there. Roux should do well in Cristobal but from our experience last year positioning was key rather than acceleration so could be a bit random. Hoping for the goods though. And yeah, hoping Clarke or Vandenbergh can do well in either situation

To call January a month of ups and downs for us would be an understatement. We experienced one of the highest highs and lowest lows of our team's short history, and despite on the whole being a dissapointing month it's certainly been an interesting start to the year. Clasico San Cristobal

Really a shockingly poor race for us. The time gaps could have changed things but really the crash stopped what could have been a very high scoring race for us. What we got was under 4PpRD and I'm the kind of guy who doesn't like to focus on that stuff but it's pretty appalling for one of our biggest races of the year. Failing the goal hurts too. Whilst there may have been a strong sprint field present Clarke somehow managed to make every split, leaving behind many a favourite, then only coming 10th in the sprint. Pretty dissapointing.Loanee Watch
Our loaned-out riders this year are Jordan Schleck and Nils Schomber, both of whom race for Statoil Pro Cycling. January saw debuts for both and both were designated bottle handlers for the Norwegian team. Jordan Schleck raced in the Great Ocean Road Classic and finished not last, which is pretty good. Our young German raced in the very different Vuelta al Tachira, and had a tough time overall (like the rest of his team) but managed to get into a nice breakaway on the first day.

Like you said, an up and down month for you. San Cristobal = High, Tachira = Low, Great Ocean = Medium. So your team covered all the bases
Really bad luck for Bennett in Tachira, for me he was a sure podium contender without the crash. Hopefully he bounces back in his next outing, which would be Trentino?

A month that started so well before your luck turned with Bennet's crash.  Hopefully it picks back up again as you come into Febuary and the rest of the season.

As has been mentioned, a very mixed bag. I think that is a fair assessment for most teams not named Repsol-Honda. I certainly have faith that your lads will turn it around, starting hopefully in February! Trentino will be an interesting (and awesome) encounter of the top climbers, Bennett can bounce back in a big way there.
