it was in 1952, 1976, 1977, 1978 but since 1979 it is HC
Spoiler at least according to wikipedia
There were no HC climbs back then. The HC catergorization was first used in 1979, iirc.

That is what mainly was annoying me. It should have been only a hc atop the sarenne for the Huez+Sarenne combination or Huez 1st category the first time with Sarenne as 2nd cat
Huez is a HC alright, while Sarenne is a 3rd cat at best.

"Glandor", that almost sound like "glandeur" (lazy ass) with Luis Fernandez accent.
Glandon means big glans in Spanish.

No, but it's hard enough anyway. 13km @8.2% is always a HC, unless you're Zomegnan, who would say it's barely a 3rd cat.
Now how is Sarenne a 2nd cat?
The theoretical classification depends on a number of points :
Points = (Average slope percentage)² x length (in km)
34 points or less : non classified
35 to 79 points : 4th category
80 to 179 points : 3rd category
180 to 249 points : 2nd category
250 to 599 points : 1st category
600 points or more : hors catégorie.
Then the number of mountain passes prior to the ascent or the strategical position on the course (aka stage finish) might provided a higher classification.
13,8 km @ 8,2 % : 8,2² x 13,8 = 928. No debate here. |

I've climbed a couple of cat. 1 and HC, and I've done Alpe d'Huez. It's not so hard overall, but the first 2 or 3 km are among the toughest ones you could think of. They shatter the field, and as any ascent had always been a mountain finish, it really deserved a HC.
Now, that being said, bar the bottom and 1 km that's located more or less from 4 to 3 km to the finish, it's not really that hard. All in all, it's probably close to the border between cat. 1 and HC. Rather low HC though.
Agreed. I've been a little bored recently (probably something to do with someone doing rather well in a bike race somewhere? ) and I've been doing a little research into GT routes and the like, which made me frequently pass by the climbbybike index. Alpe d'Huez is listed at 124, significantly lower than Ventoux (171), Madeleine (167) etc. (and actually lower than the Val Martello climb that was meant to be used in the Giro )
Although the climbbybike index thing definitely has flaws (fe I think it takes into account the altitude of the climb proportionately more than it should etc... resulting in the Angliru only scoring 162) it gives a good measure of roughly where a climb sits in difficulty ratings and this is clearly illustrated by the Alpe's relatively low value

Well I was speaking comparatively of course
I think Great Dun Fell is the highest road in Britain at an astonishing 848m - now that's what you call hors categorie

Rolland seems like a nice guy.

"Taking the jersey in Corsica made me euphoric but it also made me race differently to how I'd wanted to. I was going to ride cautiously but I used up a lot of energy. My coach (Jean Philippe Robert) didn't agree with my choice because we'd been working for the GC all year. But another reason not to go for the overall was that I'd have to ask the guys to ride for me every day even if they weren't sure if they'd keep their jobs. Fortunately that doubt has gone now because Europcar will stay on two more years."

25%? That's scary. Demanding a PCM stage finishing on that hill. |

1 full kilometer at 25%? Insane. You should tell the ToB organization asap.

That's the claim made by the people who organise a running race up it. Personally I'd say maybe 800m at 19%, if that.
And of course, when stage 2 of the Tour passes through my town next year, they're using the easiest climb of the 4 or 5 available. In reverse, so its even easier. |

Pathetic. If this happens, Pescheux has to go.
Pretty sure it is Pescheux's last year anyway!

Really? I didn't hear anything about that. I guess it's good news, can't get much worse than him.
Unless they get Olano to design the Tour route as well, of course.

Contador is taking bigger risks since the rest day. Still, Froome should handle him well.
I see the race splintering ito all tyes of small groups after the 1st time up Alpe-d' Huez. I really dont feel Froome will win here. I think SKY will wait till stage 19
https://www.letour...ge-19.html
Look at the profile. The 2 HC climbs will splinter the race. Then, SKY can use the method they have been (unless someoe dangerous attacks on an early HC) to get Froome either more time or just not lose any.
Stage 20 will be protect Froome day.
I see an unknown rider winning 18 (or atleast a rider in 15 or lower place), with Contador and Froome shadowing ach other about 4-5min behind the winner.

Matrix, Froome will want his name on a corner. He will get close to Pantani on full retard mode. |

Fuck, tomorrow I won't be able to see the stage, but I'll leave it recorded. Now I have to spend more time wondering about the stage's alterations or not. |

Yep, he's retiring. I was at the Paris-Nice in Nemours (his home town) and they did a whole ceremony on the podium for him.
