Some of his ex-teammates said that Freire was the strongest rider they have ever ridden together with in a TTT.
Individual timetrialing was the only thing Freire was not good at.
Training and automatisms are also very important. Something worth noting is that all trainings last week on Corsica by Sky were with their timetrial bikes while other teams were using their road bikes

The most brutal part is after you've buried yourself at the front, you slow down to let others by...and then you have to accelerate hard to grab the rear of the line. If, like Freire, you're explosive, that won't cost you as much.
Freire's insane acceleration seen from the side camera replay at the bunch sprint in Dax in 2006 is by far the most amazing one I've ever seen.
EDIT: Sorry, not the Dax stage where he won, it was some other stage that Tour

It's this stage I think. Left of the picture. Doesn't look nearly as impressive seen from the front because you don't realize how much slower he's going than the guys sprinting on the other side, and two pedal strokes later how much faster than them he's going

Freire was awesome. I miss see him race. As for tomorrow, I'm going to say Movistar. I have a feeling for them, if not, Garmin. |

Freire was unique. He didn't even got the max out of his career because of all his back troubles. He had that gift that he out of nowhere could be in top form with as good as no training

I'm still amazed he was selected for the 99 Worlds. Sure Spain had a ton of injuries, but he was a neo-pro with no real results.
And of course he won it.

Vandenbroucke's (who would have easily won hadn't he crashed) said his reaction when crossing the line was "Qui est ce mec la?" - Who is that guy?

Essentially Freire was Sagan with a better sprint...and very shy and friendly

I think after 2011 TDF, when BMC came a surprising 2nd, the form guide usually goes out the window somewhat with TTT's.
Orica, Garmin, Sky, OMQ and a couple of others definetly have a real shot in winning, and taking the yellow jersey. |

Porté and Froomé, will, I'm sure, be careful to eat properly and take all their vitamins before the TT tomorrow. I expect them to win by 42 minutes.
It was eleven more than necessary.

42 minutes?!
so they'll finish with a negative time?
Garmin for me
not overly convinced about Martin's recovery (who [you think] would do most of the effort for OPQS)
and Thomas looks a bit down
Movistar are the surprise packet, expecting a top 5
Top 5: Garmin, OPQS, Movistar, Sky, BMC (in that order)

Everyone is underestimating Radioshack, so I bet $3 on them, hey its win near $150 or lose $3

Sagan is also shy and friendly. Just a little bit childisch
And yes, Freire was awesome, my favourite rider ten years back.

Wasn't he a bit worse on the climbs, though?
I'm asking because most of his career was before I started watching cycling. I know that he has done well in races like the worlds and Amstel, but I haven't seen him following top climbers on f.e. the wall in Chieti, like Sagan.

Well, I agree but I believe Sagan (now, we'll see how development comes into this) is more talented. If Sagan keeps this up and doesn't burn out too soon, he's a kind of rider that only appears once in 40-50 years, I think. But of course that's a little early to say. After all, Freire has 3 World Championships and he's no poor sucker on a bike |

He was very good climber, but not Sagan level imo. And Sagan will maybe focus on this bit more in future instead of top speed, so these two will have probably quite different careers.

Was fourth on the Mur in Huy once. Would have probably won multiple Amstel Gold race's if he wasn't riding for Rabobank

So Freire to win the TTT then?
You have that feeling that Garmin will win today... but I cannot help think that if all their riders are okay Movistar could be dangerous and could win by five to ten seconds.
Certainly BMC, Garmin will be up in the top five for my money with Saxo not too far away either. I get the feeling that Omega Pharma will not really truly invest in this, though Cav does like to try in TTT's.
Sky... hard to say. Froome, Porte and Kirylenka have looked very good, Hagen looks okay also so they should be alright but I cannot see them firing for the win in this.
