Put it another way: He caught a top form Purito in a short steep climb.
Gilbert is back. At least for a day.

He has been looking like he's become better and better the last two months. And as isso pointed out for you, he just catched Rodriguez on a climb that was perfect for him. Gilbert is back.
Also, since yesterday's stage was already week 2, a thought: I've lost count of the times I've seen Valverde do that, accelerate in the last half a kilometer and pass a bunch of people. Most famously in 2003 and 2006 at Vuelta stages of course, but he does it so often.
It takes both an incredible anaerobic punch and an amazing intelligence for the exact moment to go.
Think it was a Vuelta mountain stage in 2006 or 2007 when Vinokourov had created a 45" gap over Valverde before he started his sprint with 1km to go and took the stage win with 10" over Vono.
The WC is the only thing Gilbert hasn't won yet. He's won every single Ardennes classic, the Belgian NC RR and ITT and the UCI World Tour. Now he wants to be the world champion.

That's my theory. =)
I'd like to add something to that theory:
If Gilbert wants something really bad, and he's in a decent shape: you better watch out

He's also not won the two races he announced as his two big goals for the season: MSR and RVV

Yeah, when is Moncoutie going to start riding?
There, most likely :
He's not targeting anything G.C.-wise, most likely targeting either the KOM jersey, either a stage win.
As he can't win against top G.C. favourites, he must choose his stages wisely.

Thats what spanish are good at, just following the whole climb and then sprinting in the last few hundred meters. They're not climbers, just very strong sprinters.
