+1 here, I forgot to mention it

Not necessary. He took avantatge of the situation, good for his results, he was 4th at the Tour.
I see him with 80 yrs telling his grandsons that thanks of a car that run over a collegue he made 4th at the Tour.
Besides of that, his performance in the Tour was incredible.
He didn't take any advantage. If anything, he lost time because of that. And his performance was indeed incredible, are you trying to suggest something?
Is it that difficult to understand that a person can do something good and something bad?
I think he (Voeckler) is the biggest fighter in the pack and an extremely persistent and tenacious rider. On the other hand he is unscrupulous and too theatrical. Two faces of the same coin, I coin I really like to watch on the road.

Of course someone can do something good and something bad. However, Voeckler didn't take any advantage of that situation, on the contrary, he lost two breakaway mates who would have helped him to make the gap with the peloton (and hence his GC lead) bigger.

The only one who has got a big advantage of that situation, was LL. Sanchez because he was rid of Flecha...
Guess who's back?
Lets see how many friens are still around...

LL. Sanchez was the only one who didnt want to ride after the crash. Voeckler saw the crash and got really lucky that he didnt crash also. Then he just accelarated at the point instead of just riding and looking what is going on. |

Yes, but Sanchez doesn't have to edge Flecha out in the sprint!

When a guy ends up stuck in barbed wire, and that you have only one hour to go or so, it's going to take him one minute to get off there, one or two minutes for him to come back (assuming he'll be a able to ride a bike again) if you wait for him, and no matter what, he'll then be of almost no use, as too injured.
What'd have been the point of waiting that day ? Did Hoogerland really stand a chance for anything that day, had they waited for him ? No. Simple as that. |

Best: Watching Contador slowly falling off Cadel's wheel on the Tour's queen stage. It felt like justice.
Worst (Apart from Weylandt and Tondo): In terms of racing - The absolute farce that was the Giro. That or the world championship. In terms of the riders then Hoogerland and the car.

That is nice and i absolutely understand Voeckler, but history of sport remembers the most the athletes who gave their own results away to help someone possibly injured or in need. So is Voeckler a villain? No - Is he a cycling gentleman?-Not really

Best:
- Ardennes-triple for Gilbert
- The stages to the Galibier and the Alpe d'Huez in the TdF
- Flanders Tour / Ronde van Vlaanderen: great cycling, very exciting with a lot of contenders for the win.
Worst:
- The death of Weylandt and Tondo
- The fear to attack in early GT-stages by the favourites
- Ricardo Ricco.....

I havent said anything of waiting for hoogerland. But accelarating when you see that a concurrent is in the barbed wired because of a car thats just awful. Totally agree with not a gentleman. And yes i still remembered that Ullrich waited with some other favourites for Armstrong when he was crashed because of a yellow thing. That''s sportmanship and Voeckler showed none. |

This is just the point I tried to explain at the beginning. Totally agree with Avin Wargunnson and Dymo.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I never saw Voeckler accelerate to take advantage of that situation. Clearly waiting for Flecha and Hoogerland in that situation would have been hugely costly. If you're talking about an immediate reaction, what I saw is Voeckler out of the saddle to build up speed that had been lost in slowing down to avoid the accident, whilst shaking his head - in fact, at that point it's not even clear that he's building much speed at all. If you're talking later about him continuing to press on, Flecha and Hoogerland were in too much pain to stay with the breakaway anyway, so the other 3 would have been told not to wait. I don't see what's wrong there, personally. For Voeckler, it would have been much more handy if Hoogerland and Flecha were there to pull the breakaway along further, since Voeckler showed later in the stage he was more interested in yellow than the stage itself (and Flecha and Hoogerland were no threat to him GC-wise).
EDIT: On second thoughts just read kumazan's post further up the page, which is put much better and more succinctly than mine

Best- Being an American, one of my favorites was when Horner and Leipheimer dropped Schleck in the Tour of California. Also Contador's bad tour filled with "steak" withdrawels.
Worst- Weylandt's and Tondo's deaths, and the crashes involving Soler, Flecha and Hoogerland. Also, Contador's dominance at the Giro (as he became a big carnivore in May ) was horrible. I've felt like killing him before...

Seen many documentaires about Contador and i know where he came from. A brother who can't even know that his brother is doing that because of handicap that's just awful. I think you can show a little more respect to him. I hope he didnt use anything because that would completely ruin pro cycling for me. |
