As expected: great start Malaysia for Lampre, another double victory! It seems Petacchi will have an easy time there =)

@lluuiiggii and Pelizotti2: Thanks again for your comments. Really appreciate them. As you will see, Petacchi's domination isn't finished yet...

Tour de Langkawi: Stage 2
Another mass sprint today. Hopefully.
We tried to repeat our tactics from yesterday, sending Gavazzi in the break. But again, the others had no interest in working with him. So they got caught soon.
Again, Cunego went for the mountain points, challenging his legs. This time, he climbed up first, what means he'll wear the jersey tomorrow.
In contrary to yesterday, the pack didn't remain calm after the first break got caught. 9 men tried their luck, again among them Roberto De Patre, plus slovakian champion Jakub Novak. They did well and with 20km to go, they had more than two and a half minutes of advance.
Although some of the escapees tried their luck with solo attacks, they were caught with 5km to go. Again, Hondo – in his green points jersey - led Petacchi out very well, while CCC Polsat and Bank BGZ, who were the only two teams who helped us catching the escapees, sent their sprint captain, Tomasz Smolen and Kryzstof Jezowski, respectively, at his wheel.
Just as yesterday (when he placed 4th), Jezowski performed really well. But Petacchi simply wasn't touchable. Although he was in the wind for about 2kms, he finished first with a comfortable advance.
Stage result
1 | Alessandro Petacchi | Lampre - ISD | 3h44'33 | 2 | Krzysztof Jezowski | Bank BGZ | s.t. | 3 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | s.t. | 4 | Grégory Rast | Team RadioShack | s.t. | 5 | Brett Lancaster | Team Garmin - Cervelo | s.t. | 6 | Tomasz Smolen | CCC Polsat Polkowice | s.t. | 7 | Danilo Hondo | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | 8 | Joachim Tolles | Team NSP | s.t. | 9 | Stéphane Bonsergent | Bretagne - Schuller | s.t. | 10 | Jesús Del Nero | Team NetApp | s.t. |
General Classification
1 | Alessandro Petacchi | Lampre - ISD | 6h53'07 | 2 | Roberto De Patre | Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli | + 11 | 3 | Krzysztof Jezowski | Bank BGZ | + 14 | 4 | Danilo Hondo | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | 5 | Tomasz Smolen | CCC Polsat Polkowice | + 16 | 6 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | s.t. | 7 | Stanislav Kozúbek | PSK Whirlpool - Author | s.t. | 8 | Sébastien Rosseler | Team RadioShack | + 17 | 9 | Jakub Novak | Amore & Vita | s.t. | 10 | Andrea Guardini | Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli | + 18 |
Although Hondo couldn't repeat his strong second from yesterday, he did his job perfectly well. Second victory in a row for us, and nothing seem to be able to stop us, respectively Petacchi.

@Freitas: Welcome to the story
@all: Great to know that I have a couple of constant readers who like the story. Keeps the motivation high (although at the moment, it's pretty high anyway, as the story is still relatively young).

Tour de Langkawi: Stage 3
Business as usual. Another flat stage.
Unfortunatly, the game crashed after the stage, therefore I have no screenshots.
The stage ran as the last two stages. A large break of 19 riders came free. Although we tried to bring them back relatively early, they still had a minute advance entering the last 5 kilometres. I allready abandoned the third stage win, but Cunego and Hondo put an extraordinary effort leading Petacchi towards the finish. When the sprint began, the main group was caught, but four riders were still in front. Then, Petacchi showed what kind of a sprinter he is. He rode like a rocket and indeed, he reached them early enough to celebrate his third win in a row. Almost more surprising was Hondo, who was able to hold on to Petacchi's wheel after his great effort, scoring his second podium.
Stage result
1 | Alessandro Petacchi | Lampre – ISD | 4h18'04 | 2 | Danilo Hondo | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | 3 | Jesùs del Nero | Team NetApp | s.t. | 4 | Tomasz Smolen | CCC Polsat Polkowice | s.t. | 5 | Grégory Rast | Team RadioShack | s.t. | 6 | Jack Bobridge | Team Garmin - Cervelo | s.t. | 7 | Krzyzstof Jezowski | Bank BGZ | s.t. | 8 | Stéphane Borsengent | Bretagne – Schuller | s.t. | 9 | Brett Lancaster | Team Garmin – Cervelo | 10 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | s.t. |
General classification
1 | Alessandro Petacchi | Lampre - ISD | 11h11'01 | 2 | Danilo Hondo | Lampre – ISD | +18 | 3 | Roberto De Patre | Farnese Vini – Neri Sottoli | +21 | 4 | Stanislav Kozúbek | PSK Whirlpool – Author | +23 | 5 | Krzyzstof Jezowski | Bank BGZ | +24 | 6 | Tomasz Smolen | CCC Polsat Polkowice | +26 | 7 | Jesùs del Nero | Team Netapp | s.t. | 8 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | s.t. | 9 | Sébastien Rosseler | Team RadioShack | +27 | 10 | James Perry | MTN – Qhubeka | s.t. |
Wow. Petacchi really impressed me. But I think I will try to participate in the break the next time. This was too close for my nerves to happen more often.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I'm pretty successful, but the concurrence isn't too high, so I don't think it's unrealistic. And at the latest when Paris-Nice starts, I'm sure that I won't dominate at all. But until then...

Tour de Langkawi: Stage 4
The last stage before the decisive mountain finish tomorrow. Although we caught the escapees in time the last two stages, I'll try to send one of our riders in the break.
First, we again sent Gavazzi, but just like yesterday, none of the others cared to work with him and the peloton was interested in bringing them back imediately. In the very same moment when they were back in the pack, the next riders tried their luck. This time, Swiss David Loosli was our man. They established a lead of a couple of minutes, but they were kept on a short leash by the peloton, so the advantage never got too big to handle.
Loosli was by far the best climber in the break, and without too much effort, he came in first on both mountain sprints, which means that the mountain jersey exchanges from one Lampre rider to another.
This time, it wasn't close at all: All went together with still 20km to go, so everything was prepared for another Petacchi victory. Pietropolli lead out our men in the ranking jerseys: Petacchi following Hondo, Cunego blocking any possible sprinter who would want to follow Petacchi. The only ones who were able to hold on to us were the RadioShack riders Rosseler and Rast, followed by the South-African champion Van Heerden.
When the sprint began, Petacchi and Hondo flew away. As usual, they sprinted in another league. Behind them, Gregory Rast was trying to avoid the whole podium being occupied by Lampre.
After the last stages, Hondo and Petacchi were working on a synchronal victory celebration, and they got the chance to show it today. Malaysia is nothing but a Lampre show!
Stage result
1 | Alessandro Petacchi | Lampre - ISD | 5h29'18 | 2 | Danilo Hondo | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | 3 | Grégory Rast | Team RadioShack | s.t. | 4 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | 5 | Daniele Pietropolli | Lampre - ISD | s.t. | 6 | Christoff Van Heerden | MTN - Qhubeka | s.t. | 7 | Tomasz Smolen | CCC Polsat Polkowice | s.t. | 8 | Krzysztof Jezowski | Bank BGZ | s.t. | 9 | Francesco Failli | Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli | s.t. | 10 | Brett Lancaster | Team Garmin - Cervelo | s.t. |
General classification
1 | Alessandro Petacchi | Lampre - ISD | 16h40'09 | 2 | Danilo Hondo | Lampre - ISD | + 22 | 3 | Roberto De Patre | Farnese Vini - Neri Sottoli | + 31 | 4 | Stanislav Kozúbek | PSK Whirlpool - Author | + 33 | 5 | Krzysztof Jezowski | Bank BGZ | + 34 | 6 | Bjorn Selander | Team RadioShack | + 35 | 7 | Tomasz Smolen | CCC Polsat Polkowice | + 36 | 8 | Grégory Rast | Team RadioShack | s.t. | 9 | Jesús Del Nero | Team NetApp | s.t. | 10 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | s.t. |
By and by, it's getting too simple. When Pietropolli was pulling the train off, no one was able to follow (except RadioShack). Cunego on 4 speaks for itself. I'm almost hoping for some more serious concurrence in the mountains tomorrow.

I have to admit that I controlled the difficulty more than once myself, because it went so well. But I can assure you, it's hard

Tour de Langkawi: Stage 5
As announced, today will be the stage were the overall winner will be crowned. The climb up to the Genting Highlands isn't too steep (what by the way should suit Cunego even more), but fairly long.
Again, the game crashed after the stage :/ so again, you have to make do with my written report
We weren't present in the break today, but Hondo, Gavazzi and Loosli did a good jop making the pace, so the advance never got bigger than two and a half minutes.
When the climb started, I sent Loosli to the front and he did great enforcing the speed, the peloton started to split. When he was done with about 10km to go, I made the mistake that eventually would cost us the overall win: Maybe overestimating him, I let Cunego attack.
He came free, but his advance didn't grow as I had expected/wished. By and by, he got tired, and when other riders like Machado attacked and reached him, they were fresher than him. A group of four riders reached the last kilometer together, but Johan Mombaerts (BigMat – Auber 93) and mentioned Tiago Machado pulled away and created a gap to Cunego and Tabriz' Markus Eibegger.
A bit surprisingly, Mombaerts, who usually is far from being competitive to the likes of Machado and Cunego, showed up to be the strongest, winning the stage and probably the whole tour.
Stage result
1 | Johan Mombaerts | Big Mat – Auber 93 | 2h56'11 | 2 | Tiage Machado | Team RadioShack | s.t. | 3 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre - ISD | + 29 | 4 | Markus Eibegger | Tabriz Petrochemical Cycling Team | + 34 | 5 | Andrea Noè | Farnese Vini – Neri Sottoli | + 1'18 | 6 | Markus Fothen | Team NSP | s.t. | 7 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | + 2'05 | 8 | Thomas Peterson | Team Garmin – Cervelo | s.t. | 9 | Daniele Pietropolli | Lampre - ISD | + 2'13 | 10 | Álex Ardila Cano | Colombia es Pasion – Cafe de Colombia | + 2'45 |
General classification
1 | Johan Mombaerts | Big Mat – Auber 93 | 19h36'50 | 2 | Tiage Machado | Team RadioShack | + 4 | 3 | Damiano Cunego | Lampre - ISD | + 35 | 4 | Markus Eibegger | Tabriz Petrochemical Cycling Team | + 44 | 5 | Markus Fothen | Team NSP | +1'28 | 6 | Andrea Noè | Farnese Vini – Neri Sottoli | s.t. | 7 | Yury Trofimov | Katusha Team | + 2'11 | 8 | Thomas Peterson | Team Garmin – Cervelo | + 2'15 | 9 | Daniele Pietropolli | Lampre - ISD | + 2'23 | 10 | Álex Ardila Cano | Colombia es Pasion – Cafe de Colombia | + 2'55 |
I said I wanted some concurrence. I got some. Nevertheless, I think that Cunego could have won the stage if I wouldn't have let him attack that early, and instead e.g. sent Pietropolli in front to continue the work Loosli began.
Too much if and would. A third place isn't that bad either, and as I'm expecting Petacchi to win the next two flat stages, we will probably be leaving Malaysia with six stage wins and a third overall rank, which is still quite successful.

Excellent report!
For this short stage races, when there are few mountain finish... the best is to attack near the finish and secure the victory... because you will not have more options to gain time. So bonus time is gold.
3 weeks races are differents... and you could go to make difference for the GC.
Good luck in the next stages... hope sprint victories! |

Doing some catch up here, what an amazing race for Lampre! Petacchi and Hondo are destroying everybody in the sprints! Only Cunego win missed, but still 3rd is great, and you gotta give the other teams a small chance

Thanks ricotero and lluuiiggii.
I often tend to make that mistake (although one could think that I would learn from it...). My error in reasoning is the following: Cunego is the best climber and in decent form -> when he climbs, no one should be able to follow, because no one has his climbing skills -> the earlier I attack, the more impressing will be his advance. I simply disavow that a pack is stronger that a single rider
And of course, ricotero, it would have been more than enough to just attack shortly in front of the finish, but I was so dominant the stages before, I guess that I wanted to continue like that in the mountain. Although it obviously wasn't possible. I hope that I'll keep that it mind for future races.
Next stage is coming up tommorow (I allready wrote it down, but I conserve some posts for the next week, where I'm on holiday and I don't think that I'll play much )

Tour de Langkawi: Stage 6
After the jaunt into the mountains yesterday, the peloton returns to the sprinter's domain for the last two stages. Or shall I say to Petacchi's domain?
Not surprising, there was a breakaway again. Four riders tried their best...
… but I have learned from the past flat stages and sent some of our riders to control the pace. Therefore, the advance never got bigger than three minutes and soon began to decrease. Again, everything was served for a mass sprint finish.
Maybe Pietropolli and Hondo were too tired after yesterday's climb, because for some reason, our lead-out didn't work as it was used to. Petacchi had to follow another train and his position wasn't the best.
Although it was a bit closer today, it still remains fact that no one is even close to Petacchi when it comes to sprinting. Fifth sprint, fifth vicory for him. Jezowski proved to be the second best sprinter in the field.
Not until reading through the results, I noticed that something happened to Machado today. I don't know if he crashed, had a puncture or simply was whacked after yesterday's efforts. But he finished 3'50 behind the pack, lost his second place to Damiano Cunego and is now 18th in the GC.
