February 18th: Tour of Oman
Stage 5: Wattayat - Sultan Qaboos Stadium, 139.5 kms
One more flat to go, finally!! (gotta say I’m tired of playing only flat stages that are all the same thing in route, landscape, etc)
Our stage breakaway features only 5 riders today, 2 of Seara/Vivo. Escuela was one of them, and he took advantage of the opportunity to get the 2 sprint checks, which cuts 12 seconds for him, putting him on a good GC for one day xD
The peloton never let the gap out of control, and, similar to yesterday’s stage, caught the break very early, with 27 km to go.
With the sprint about to start, Rogelin had a nice position on William Bonnet’s wheel.
Differently than stage 3, though, when Bonnet started sprinting Rogelin couldn’t follow. With 1.5 km left, Alexandre Usov was in the lead, but Bonnet was coming really fast!
After they passed the 1 km sign, Usov was still in front, but probably not for a long time. Greg Van Avermaet passed flying out of nowhere. Rogelin was 6th, and could very well give us a 3rd Top Ten in the race.
Bonnet can raise his hands to the air in celebration as he wins today’s stage! Usov passes 2nd and can celebrate too, as he win the points jersey! Greg Van Avermaet got closer to him in the end but had to stick with 3rd. Rogelin got us a nice 8th.

Another good stage, a 3rd Top Ten in Tour of Oman! Great sprint for him, he had a good position (in the wheel of the winner xD). And finally the flat sprint stages are over!! Tomorrow's time trial offers something at least different, and probably exciting. Maybe Médici will get our 4th Top Ten? We hope so.
@all
Sure, it's being a very great Tour of Oman, much better than expected
Thanks for the comments =)
---- Just some news...
Astana has declared that Carlos Sastre will be their priority for next season. Cervélo also talked about next season, saying their main target will be Alessandro Petacchi.

February 19th: Tour of Oman
Stage 6: Al Jissah - Muscat Corniche, 26.4 kms
Oh yes! Finally the flat stages are over, now it’s the race against the truth! With a medium size time trial today (26 km) the winner should be decided today. The bonus second could make difference. All the pre-race favorites are 38” behind the yellow jersey but one. Jimmy Engoulvent got 2nd on stage 1 and added to that a 3rd in stage 2, getting 20 second bonus. Will this bonus decide the winner today?
I gotta tell you something: I am hoping for Hincapie to win! Come on George
Jose Antonio De Segovia was the first of the favorites to leave the start house. He surely got disappointed with himself - getting provisional 3rd with no good time trialists habing started yet. 38’25” for him (+24”).
Second favorite out was Sébastien Joly. He didn’t disappoint, and set the new best time - 37’32”.
Matías Médici, with his Argentina TT champion jersey, did a good time trial, getting provisional first on the middle check, in front of Joly. In the end, though, he got a bit tired, and finished provisional second - 37’56” (+24”).
Sebastian Lang didn’t ride a good time trial and finished provisional 4th, 38 seconds behind Joly - 38’10” (+38”).
Brent Bookwalter rode a good time trial, but not good enough; provisional 2nd two seconds in front of Médici - 37’54” (+22”).
Vitaliy Popkov rides a solid time trial, but can’t beat Joly - 37’46” (+14”).
Jérôme Coppel really didn’t ride a good time trial. In the provisional finish, he got 6th - 38’02” (+30”).
Leif Hoste even caught the rider in front of him, but couldn’t beat Joly’s time too - 37’50” for him (+18”).
Soonly after George Hincapie left it started raining. Maybe that was crucial, as he passed 37’32” - same time as Joly - but in second position (+0”).
37’52”(+20”) was what this man, Jimmy Engoulvent, needed to be leader of the race. 4th in GC, he was the last of the favorites to leave the start house. He passed 7th(+9”) in the middle check. And as he crosses the finish line, he can celebrate!! With a time of 37’37”(+5”) and a 3rd place, Jimmy Engoulvent wins the Tour of Oman 2010!!

Good stage for us. Médici makes it our 4th Top Ten, in a race we expected/wanted 1 Top Ten. The stage would have been better if Hincapie had won the GC though Solid ride by Médici, beating some riders better than him without a good preparation - his fitness would be better if he had taken part in Qatar, but we hadn't thought in that.
Our next race is Giro di Sardegna, a short stage race held in Italy. It can be a short race, but it’s not a small race. Looking at its history, we see great names: Eddy Merckx holds the record for most wins, 4, and the most recent winner is Daniele Bennati. The race was created in 1958 but had only 27 editions so far due to several years without the race.
This year’s route is quite though. Starting in Olbia and finishing in Cagliari, it offers 5 stages, 3 being hilly and 2, flat. There are no time trials, so Stage 2 mountain top finish has a good chance to decide the winner, as stage 1 and 4 aren’t so difficult. The flat stages are no easy either: I believe some sprinters won’t be able to survive the hills in stage 3. Our last stage is the easiest, although we still have some small hills near the end. Profiles:
The GC Contenders
We have this rider here, Damiano Cunego, anybody knows him? xD He is the main favorite, but is facing some serious competition in Joaquim Rodríguez and Vincenzo Nibali. In the early season their fitness shouldn't be good, though, so other contenders might have a good chance, like Androni's Francesco Ginanni and Miche's Przemyslaw Niemic (I remember this guy from Giro della Calabria, so he might have a good fitness).
The Sprinters
Main names here are Francesco Chicchi, Alessandro Petacchi and Daniele Bennati. We have a lot of other names, though, such as Robbie McEwen and Robert Hunter. Even with only 2 flat stages, the sprinters decided to come in a mass number. The 2 sprint stages should be a great battle.
Rio es Carnival/Seara/Vivo
Team Goals:
- Get mountain jersey (Médici)
Again, we have a very weak team here. Our best guy in hills is Matías Médici(HIL 65). So we have no chances in anything. That's why we can only aim in the mountain jersey. It will be a very difficult goal, as in the break there will surely be riders better in hill than Médici. We have nothing more to try though.
@baia
thanks! we're not hoping for anything really good though =/
February 23rd: Giro di Sardegna
Stage 1: Olbia – Bornova, 144.1 kms
To start the race, a quite difficult but short hilly stage. The main climb is 31 km away from the finish, so I think we’ll have a maybe small size group arriving first. The finish is uphill, so it can be a great sprint. Or not. As to what interests our squad, there are 2 KOM checkpoints, the first one giving 6 points and the second 16. We’ll try to get the first check, and if the break is still in front as we pass the last check, try to score some points, but very probably Médici won’t have energy enough to do that.
The Break of the Day featured 12 riders. We had Médici among those.
BotD: Marco Corti, Artem Ovechkin, Fabio Taborre, Christian Méier, Vladislav Borisov, Vladimir Miholjevic, Marco Cattaneo, Leonardo Pinizzotto, Matías Médici, Michele Gaia, Davide Torosantucci, Aristide Ratti.
About 13 km before the first KOM check, Ratti attacked his break companions. When he was 5 km from the summit, he had a 1’12” gap to his companions.
He was a serious danger to our points which should be secured, so shortly after the start of the climb, Médici accelerated.
After an great effort, Médici can be happy as he wins the KOM sprint!! He reached Ratti 1.5 km from the check, and 600 meters later, all riders were together again, but Médici still managed to pass first.
Our rider struggled to keep with the break, but was managing to do it thanks to the descents. As the group started the main climb, they still had a 2’44” advantage to the peloton.
The pack was gaining no ground to the break, and, towards the middle of the pack, 5 riders broke away from the pack.
E1 - (11 riders);
+1’01” E2 - Médici;
+51” E3 - Kolobnev, Gadret, Scarponi, Riblon, Rodriguez;
+36” E4 - Solari;
+40” P - (104 riders - Cunego, Nibali, Ginanni, Niemic)
The high pace in the break split it in smaller groups. The pack was only losing ground to Rodriguez group. They had already reached Médici and were close to the biggest break split group.
E1 - (3 riders);
+37” E2 - (8 riders);
+1’01” E3 - (6 riders - Rodriguez group + Médici);
+56” E4 - Solari;
+1’09” P (103 riders - Cunego, Nibali, Ginanni, Niemic).
As crossing the KOM check, Médici was in the third lead group with 10 riders. Scarponi awesomely made his way to the first group, while Rodriguez, Riblon and Gadret were chasing in the descent.
E1 - (4 riders - Scarponi);
+49” E2 - Rodriguez, Riblon, Gadret
+1’01” E3 - (10 riders – Kolobnev);
+45” E4 - Solari;
+1’08” E5 - Niemic;
...
+2’11” P - (54 riders - Nibali, Ginanni).
Riblon and Gadret drop Rodriguez and make their way up the leading group.
E1 - (6 riders - Riblon, Gadret, Scarponi);
+1’32” E2 - (12 riders - Kolobnev, Rodriguez, Médici);
+36” E3 - (4 riders - Lorenzetto, Feillu);
+1’21” E4 - Niemic;
...
+1’58” E7 - (11 riders - Ginanni, Bennati);
…
+2’49” A2 - (36 riders - Nibali).
Rodriguez caught the front group, and together with the other 3 important riders starts to sprint for the victory. The 3 escapees survivors just got dropped on the finish hill. A chasing group of 14 riders containing Kolobnev and Lorenzetto is getting closer. Médici was dropped and is 2’23” behind the leaders.
1 km to go - Gadret and Scarponi are creating a new group! Gadret leading.
But Scarponi passes him in the final km and raises his hands in celebration! Second group lost 26” in the sprint. Médici crossed 25th, 4’21” behind stage winner Michele Scarponi.

Well... it was a good stage as we got the first KOM check, but it would be better if we were able to maybe score some points in the second KOM sprint. We knew that would be very difficult since the beggining though and just finishing the climb stil away from the pack was already a surprise, so... as for the favorites performance, I can just quote myself:

February 24th: Giro di Sardegna
Stage 2: Macomer - Nuoro, 169.3 kms
Today’s mountain top finish might see a big chance in GC. Small gaps are separating the first 4 places in the classification.. The stage will start very tough, with lots of hills and a mountain sprint giving 10 points that we hope to collect with Médici, then a small easy downhill and flat section before the riders start the main climb of the day, Monte Oristano(10.5 km 5.6%) which will give 16 mountain points for the winner.
A small group of 7 riders was formed in the early km of the stage, containing Médici. The pack rode a hard tempo from the beginning, though, and they never got a gap bigger than 2 minutes. The pack was in the lead with 5 km to the first KOM check. It would be a small but steep hill, with sections of 19.4%.
Médici attacked for the points and had a small gap but probably enough with 1.4 km to the check. The problem was that Niemic decided to accelerate in the peloton(he has no mountain points). Please Niemic, don’t ruin our plans!
Yes, he ruined our plans. Médici still holds 2nd place saving some important 8 points for the KOM competition.
The pack rode a high tempo from the beginning, so no breakaway managed to build a gap in any moment. The peloton started Monte Oristano with Androni Giocattoli, Lampre and AG2R setting a very high pace.
2nd in GC John Gadret attacked quite in the beggining of the climb. Scarponi followed.
The leader couldn’t stick to Gadret’s wheel, and after they stopped attacking, a small gap was on (13”).
Scarponi reached Gadret later, but on the invisible 2 km mark, Gadret opened the gap again.
The difference is now Gadret building up his gap, getting it to 22” with 500 meters to go!
The magic of PCM joined them in the last 200 meters, but there was no time enough for Scarponi to pass Gadret! He wins the stage and the leader jersey with the time bonifications!
Through the whole climb no other rider attacked the peloton. In the sprint, though, splits occurred and the second group to arrive was an 8 rider group led by Cunego, 1’10” behind stage winner.

Ah, I can’t believe Niemic stole our points so close to the check =( I mean, he had no points in the KOM competition, why would he do that? With 14 points, Médici is still in the competition and is strong! But there’s something that got me almost as worried as this, and it was the ‘Scarponi-closes-gap’ ending! You can even check it in this gif, it’s a non-sense thing, it shouldn’t be in the game =(
You still have a chance in KOM class.,just need to get some good performances from Médici.
Yes,that close gap its annoying and he gets 4sec..i won a stage like this and had even more bigger gap to the 2nd rider and he got same time has me...but pcm10 is great(graphics),love to watch the stages landscapes.

Sure, the problem is that it isn't only that thing that annoys me. In sprints, AI rarely does sprint trains, sometimes they have a sprinter following let's say your train and you're in a speed 0f 54km/h, from nowhere some lead-outs pass by your train in a speed of 64km/h like just as the sprint is about to start! That's kinda stupid too. And more than one time I've seen my guy attacking in a group of, let's say, 15 riders, but he just moves backwards, like, if he stayed in 'maintain position' he would still be in front but then he burns out and go to the back of the group(and in a mountain this happened, with lance armstrong in 03 db =P)
So, in terms of gameplay, I think PCM 09 >> 10. In terms of graphics, sure PCM 10 >> 09.
February 25th: Giro di Sardegna
Stage 3: Nuoro - Oristano, 206.4 kms
Today should be a stage for the sprinters, but with a lot of hills in the beginning of it, we’ll have to see which sprinters will survive. Maybe the pack will go very slow, then it could be a day for the breakaway. Anyway, we have 1 KOM check giving 10 points today. Médici is trailing the leaders in the KOM competition by 6 points, so he wins that check, he wears the jersey tomorrow.
When the riders arrived the climb that had the only KOM sprint today, there was no breakaway formed. Incredibly, Seara/Vivo riders Médici and Camargo were making the pace, but unintentionally. What happened was I put Camargo protecting Médici on dot on a 45~50 effort and he simply took the peloton in his hands =P He didn’t break from the break nor they relayed in front of him.
That situation was good for us. The problem was that when Médici attacked, some other riders followed him. Not for the KOM points, but simply to create the BotD.
Even though he tried to attack more times, he simply didn’t pass the others in the steep hills and had to stick with 3rd on the check, which means he gets only 6 points. He won’t be wearing the jersey tomorrow, as he is tied with the other 2 riders in the competition with 20 points.
The other attackers finally formed the BotD. Médici got back to the pack as he needs to be fresh for tomorrow’s stage if he wants the Mountain jersey.
They were caught with 14 km to go. All Seara/Vivo riders struggled to keep with the pack in the moment, even in the flat part(I’ve no ideia why).
Daniele Bennati was the best positioned when the sprint started, with Petacchi and McEwen on his wheel…
And he won the stage ahead of Petacchi and Anza, without major problems. No Seara/Vivo rider finished with the 118 rider peloton, and that’s not the first time this happen(happened with Scott/Marcondes in PCM 09 - not in the story). And yes, Médici was protected all the time and didn’t finish with the pack either. And he has fitness 88. And no rider green bar got empty.

Oh no!! Médici had to get those points! But he failed! It's very strange, he attacks but doesn't pass the others we would be in a great position if we had gotten those 4 points, but we've missed them and will have to count with a lot of luck now. It's not over, it's just a lot more complicated. Oh, and I've no ideia why none of my riders finished in the pack.
Yes,pcm10 needs another gameplay patch...about your riders,wich level of effort they have when peloton reach the final kms?i have mine always on 99% when sprint trains are formed and they stay there,only the weaks loose ground.,but it´s really bad,when i am in botd,only my rider relays,if he doesn´t do it,the others go very slow or just attack and attack...
Feliz Ano Novo!
Edited by baia on 31-12-2010 12:12
@baia
Feliz Ano Novo too
And they always stay in 50 effort, just like for the almost whole stage. And a lot of times some 2 or 3 riders of my team can't finish with the peloton, but that is because they probably are really bad(FL<60) and have been protecting other rider all day, But always about at least 4 riders finish with the peloton.
About the break thing happened to me once in this career.. but it never had happened before.
February 26th: Giro di Sardegna
Stage 4: Carbonia - Iglesias, 178.3 kms
This is the stage for us. Two mountain checks, very few hills, 26 points to be battled. First check worth 10, second check, 16. I believe that the peloton will be in front on the second check climb, so Scarponi, who was 20 points, could guarantee the KOM jersey naturally. We’ll hope for the break to stay clear until the end of that climb. These will be the last stage with mountain checks. After poor performances by Médici a good amount of points, he has to do well today if he wants that jersey
14 riders formed the break of the day. Seara/Vivo successfully put 2 riders in it, Médici and his main helper Camargo. No rider but Médici had points in the KOM competition, so that was good for us.
BotD: Armando Camargo, Matías Médici, Alberto Ongarato, Manuel Cardoso, Cristiano Benenati, Vladimir Miholjevic, Reto Hollenstein, Laurent Beuret, Alessandro Vanotti, Damjan Stankovic, Leonardo Pinizzotto, Cameron Meyer, Diego Caccia, Volodymyr Kogut.
As we reached the foot of the first kom climb, the break had a 5’52” gap to the peloton. The situation was really good: big break, good gap(2nd check in 40 km) and one team mate to protect Médici through the climbs.
Médici tried to attack with the check in sight!
But he is weak again and passes 5th, getting only 2 points, almost no points. He was in the moment virtual KOM winner, though, with 22 points.
The break arrive in the second KOM climb. They are 3’26” ahead of the pack and the climb is 10 km long, so very probably the break will arrive first.
Oh no! Médici loses contact to the group! He burns almost all his energy trying to attack but gains almost no ground through that crazy weird slopes(going to 0% and 10% all the time)!
Médici was caught by the pack who has almost reached the rest of the break with 1.5 km left before the check when Laurent Beuret attacks!! He won the 10 points in the first check, if he gets more than 12 points, there goes our whole plans for the KOM jersey!
For this image, only one word, taken from a famous movie(in slow mo) - “Luke, I am your father!”
“NOOOO!!!”
Oh, I can’t believe it!! He started the day with no KOM points, and now, Laurent Beuret is the winner of the KOM jersey. Those silly points cost Médici the jersey. Anyway, it’s just the kom jersey in Giro di Sardegna, so no really big deal. But it could have been the first time we see a rider of Seara/Vivo in the game podium(only 1st place). That’s sad =(
Congrats to Beuret, he deserved it.
Back to the stage, Beuret was caught in the descent by the peloton of 35 riders. 3rd in overall Rodriguez decided to attack on the descent of the small hill after the KOM climb. He was 2’20” behind overall leader so was no very big threat. He was eventually caught on the next climb.
In the next and last hill, Scarponi attacked. He quickly opened a gap of 26” to the chasing 23 rider group.
5 km left for him, and the gap was on 23”. Could he get to wear the leader jersey again in the race?
Probably not, as Pozzovivo pulled the group in an amazing speed to reel Scarponi in with 3 km to go. Sprint time!
It’s an uphill sprint and under the 1 km banner and Emanuele Vona is leading, Scarponi second, Longo Borghini third!
Paolo Longo Borghini wins! He never sprinted at all and was the lead-out for Vona, so really a strange win. He also didn’t celebrate. Scarponi is second, so he is leader of Giro di Sardegna again with bonus seconds. Vona is 3rd. Leader John Gadret did not sprint and loses his jersey in the bonus seconds.
