Il Bimbo d'bronzo | Giro d'Italia 2015
OZrocker
Just caught up on this story, great effort! Like others have said it's very well written and also provides some interesting plotlines outside of the racing action too. Fuglsang looks like a good addition too, with team-mates like Arredondo and Kiserlovski he should get better when his main goals come around.

Oh, and hopefully not all us Aussies are as evil as Bayung or as dangerous as Richie Wink

Nicholas might just get lucky this Tour. Pfft

@The Schleck Fan
Sky has like 4 riders who could go for GC here so there is still a lot of work to be done.
I don't think Andy is developing anymore. He has 78MO/HIL. It's his END/STA/REC that are crap.

@OZrocker
Glad to know you enjoyed reading up!
Fuglsang so far hasn't been great, but in theory he should be the best climber we got now.

And don't worry I quite like Richie. I got less hope for Bayung though. Wink

Stage 3 | Prilly › Granges, 190.3 km
www.procyclingstats.com/races/profilesmaps/2013-04/Tour-de-Romandie-Stage-2-1365766543.jpg

With Marcel Kittel falling early in the race, today’s stage had all the signs of becoming another hectic one. Reason enough to place myself at the front of the peloton for the entire day, making sure to draft behind the guys of Sky as my legs weren’t feeling great today.

i.imgur.com/apYvTgy.jpg

It was on the final climb of the day that the action really started with an attack by Rolland. The acceleration immediately returned in kind by Peter Sagan and half of Team Sky including their leader Porte. The entire chain of events put tremendous strain on the peloton as the group stretched out. Luck would have it that I was the fortunate owner of one of the first places.

i.imgur.com/zXvaBQH.jpg

A place which would proof to be worth all the effort I had put into the entire day as without even attacking I slipped out in front of the peloton. My cadence surprisingly smooth as I worked my way through the final 5km to the top which I would cross solo with a good 15 seconds on Michal Kwiatkowski who in turn was 20 seconds ahead of the peloton.

i.imgur.com/oDFLhQQ.jpg

Knowing there was no way to survive the final 17km on my own I loosened up my legs a bit waiting to get caught back by the peloton. Kwiatkowski had other plants though as he flew past me, throwing himself into the descent. Having to set up all sails to get back into his wheel, I barely managed to follow the Polish champion. Whether he had something for breakfast, or someone at Tissot HQ was transferring over some Swiss Francs to a bank account in Warshaw. The Pole pedaled as a man possessed.

i.imgur.com/zWpb7Pi.jpg

It then dawned on me that Kwiatkowski was riding for the lead in the GC! It didn’t take a lot of sweet words (none actually) to agree to a deal. With the quartet behind us slowly closing in on us, we decided we would both ride our lungs out. Kwiatkowski getting the leaders jersey and I getting the stage win.

i.imgur.com/UG5eFBr.jpg

Together we managed to gain and hold a lead of almost a minute on the peloton as I added another win to my palmares. Acting my best to seem surprise as I crossed the finish line a new friend richer and a sponsor happier. Maybe I could even convince my new friend Michal to lay down onto a nice patch of grass tomorrow and hand me the leader jersey hmm?

Stage 4 | Payerne › Payerne, 181km
www.procyclingstats.com/races/profilesmaps/2013-04/Tour-de-Romandie-Stage-3-1365766554.jpg

The entire team was in good spirits during breakfast after my win of the previous day. A win I had blown up into an epic man against man battle to keep up appearances. One man his appearance was not too friendly though. You guessed it; Bayung Grimshaw made sure to shoot me dirty glances between every bite of pasta he took. I had gotten used to his little theatrics though and shrugged them off.

Everyone at the start today knew that even though a 160 men were starting today, Peter Sagan would be picking up the flowers at the end of the day.

i.imgur.com/yP9p63m.jpg

After a fast race we approached the final two climbs of the day with a 70 man sized peloton. Peter Sagan who had been riding on the front row all day, didn’t deem this enough though as he placed a sharp acceleration on the penultimate climb, Kwiatkowski right away following on his wheel. Cue for me to follow as did 20 others among which my teammates Francisco Bongiorno and Bob Jungels. Major names missing where Van den Broeck, Poels and Pozzovivo.

i.imgur.com/v7mFaJh.jpg

With Sky and Omega Pharma right away keeping up the pace in our group there was no hope for any of the chasers to return. Nor did my attack to get away from the group get any chance of succeeding.

i.imgur.com/kIAKTBc.jpg

Sagan who in his foolish attacking had used up too much energy ended up losing the final sprint. As it was my good friend Kwiatkowski who ran away with the flowers. I finished fourth, missing just out on the bonus seconds.

Stage 5 | Marly › Les Diablerets, 182km
i.imgur.com/SJ1YBht.jpg

It was hard to force a smile on my face as I looked at the route profile for today. With the 28km long Col de la Croix as the final climb today could be a very bad day for my GC hopes.

As expected nothing happened until we reached La Croix, the entire peloton anxious for the massive climb. Right at the bottom of the climb we caught up to the early breakaway in which young American Craddock secured the mountain jersey after finishing first on all three previous climbs.

i.imgur.com/kVDWqI4.jpg

It was after 3km of ascending that Kwiatkowski himself started the drama movie for the last hour of the day by launching an attack, straight away followed by Nibali, Rolland and Porte.

i.imgur.com/DhMVahs.jpg

When Froome, Van den Broeck, Kreuziger, Wellens and Aziz Kastell attacked there wasn’t much more I could do besides ride my own pace and hope for the best as I slowly made my way out of the peloton.

i.imgur.com/OayMcS5.jpg

To my surprise it didn’t take long before I caught up to Wellens, but more specifically Froome. The Brit completely focused on his STEM as I slowly made my way past him.

i.imgur.com/x8F7q8M.jpg

After 22km on the horrendous climb I got onto the less steeper section with long straights and was able to see the group Kastell ahead of me. The situation in the race being;

<Porte, Nibali, Rolland> 52” <Kwiatkowski, Kreuziger, Kastell, Van den Broeck> 41” <Arcier> 1’26” <Group Froome>

i.imgur.com/f9nyfpy.jpg

My morale got a tiny boost as I could see Kastell slowly being dropped out of the group ahead, but that didn’t mean I was getting any closer as by the time I crossed the top I was chasing Aziz by 1’20”. And with the long climb completely draining me I was unable to do much in the descent. Crossing the finish-line 3’30” after stage winner and new leader Richie Porte.

The loss on the mountain stage was kind of expected, though it would've been great if Nicholas could've beaten Aziz. Sad

Nicholas certainly enjoyed himself on stage 3 with that Great victory Grin, but stage 5 wasn't so kind with those time losses Sad

Stage 6 | Genève › Genève, 18.6km
www.procyclingstats.com/races/profilesmaps/2013-04/Tour-de-Romandie-Stage-5-ITT-1365766572.jpg

I threw my aero helmet against the side of the team bus. Three seconds. That darned Kastell had beaten me by three bloody seconds.

Where I had started the day expecting to make a good chance to overtake Aziz in the GC the almost pan flat 18km long time trial left me in fury. As Aziz who normally is the weaker of us on the flat beat me by three seconds.

“You better don’t start the Giro, you won’t fi-“ In a reflex in the middle of my emotions I planted my fist against the cheek of Bayung Grimshaw. And it felt great. Who cared what that height restricted ‘Aussie’ had to say.

Our DS Adrian with whom I was working for the first time and who also would be leading our team in the Giro was less supportive of my actions.

i.imgur.com/l7xJyDM.jpg

The Old Italian who had the appearance of a friendly uncle was unable to suppress his Italian temperament. Calling me everything bad under the sun. Not without its effect as he really made me feel miserable.

I ended up apologizing to that smug of a Bayung with the entire team present in the middle of the bus. Grimshaw who had a check as big as a baseball reluctantly hissed his acceptance of my excuse, the filthy snake. I really did not care about him anymore.

i.imgur.com/nmKDdiW.jpg

Aziz clearly had improved a lot and I had to do so as well if I wanted to beat him next month.

Yes, 28km is a bit too much for Arcier.
