If that were true, Eddy Merckx would be the major favorite for this Tour.
People get older. He's been at the top for 7 years, it's time to fade. The human body can't handle more.
Imagine that. All the talent still riding around, we'd have an amazing battle with Hinault, Merckx, Van Impe, Kübler, Bohamontes...
81 Hinault vs 69 Merckx vs 84 Fignon vs 51 Koblet vs 58 Gaul. Go.

Only if Sagan is wearing yellow.

Sorry, I really don't value 8 domestiques much over 7.
Loook at the lineup of this years Tour. It's not like they have a realstic chance at a podium. Don't forget that I am a Garmin fanboy as a whole. Unless they want KOM with Martin, going for team or something, they aren't winnning anything. Taking one less mediocre domestique for the ride isn't a big loss.
You might not value an extra domestique but when someone crashes and may be forced to retire which is likely at the Tour, Vaughters will be glad he brought an extra helper.
Even if Farrar was at his old form, I think the same decision might have been made. This is one of the biggest years for Garmin, because they have 3 potential Top 10 riders and Ryder is not getting any younger. He's got a good shot at doing something big this year and he might actually finish higher on some mountain stages than Farrar could even on the flats.
Lets also take that "mediocre domestique" thing back a bit. Imo, Garmin have one of the best teams in the race, on the whole and a lot of climbing talent as well. I'd go as far as saying each and every rider can ride mountains pretty well other than Bauer.

Exactly my point on your lasts sentence. I'm not talking about guys like Danielson, VandeVelde, Dennis. I'm talking about Bauer.
Also, I'm not sure where your "3 top 10" riders come from. Hesjedal is almost a shoe in. Maybe Martin. I find it hard to see Talansky making a top 10 in the Tour right now.
I'm just mad because now I have no one to root for in the sprints.

Navardauskas in Giro form will probably get the same results in sprints as Farrar would have anyway

You don't think Navardauskas can take multiple top 10 placings?
Or do you think that Farrar would have won multipe stages?

No, I do not think Navardauskus can top 10 on flat sprinter's stages in the Tour de France.

But 69 Merckx, before his accident on the track, is unbeatable I think |

Personally I think the most important thing for this Tour is right now in the first week. Corsica's roads are very dangerous. Will any contenders crash? I'm especially thinking of this guy as he's a very bad bike handler, but could happen to anyone

Let's say it like this:
You can easily lose the Tour in the first week.
You have to win the Tour in the last week.
Right? |

Froome looking more anorexic as ever on that pic. No doubt he's 'prepared' well. |

Actually that would make for an interesting race! Because Sky would then have to come out and do something. Froome would have to go on the attack, and that would be awesome to watch
@Ian
I recall Wiggins gaining yellow on stage 7 then never losing another second from then

I meant on this Tour's profile. You won't win the Tour in the first week, but in the last |

I thought riders health came first. I hope the medical examination will conclude he's anorexic and should go home eat something instead of taking in such an exhausting event as Tour de France.
Not gonna happen any day soon though... |

I agree with Aquarius. Every single Sky rider is so fuckin' skinny. I remember that picture from Wiggo from last season where his legs looked like bones and skin, nothing else. |
