Really like the picture of Schleck coming over the top of the climbSmile

Me, too Smile Nice job with Sprick staying in the leading group.

roturn
Sprick is having a nice ride there. Maybe a top 10 is still possible.

@lluuiigii: Thanks a lot for liking the reports. That's the nicest thing to hear as a storywriter. And what I mean with the intermediate sprint is that Curvers lost contact with his companions after not sprinting at it and wasn't able to close that gap. Very frustrating.
@tsmoha / sutty: Yeah, I got a good one there. Would have been even better if Schleck hadn't decided to not celebrate his win.
@roturn: That'd be awesome, but I think the timetrial might cause him to lose a lot of time. But we'll see.

Stage 4: Thierrens - Neuchâtel
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_4.png
After two harder stages we now have a shorter, flatter one. Still not a 100% sprinters stage though, as we have two categorized climbs in the second half of the stage. A late attack from Vinokourov surprised the sprinters irl, so maybe something similar here?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_4_1.jpg
Curvers in a big early breakaway today. They were given a huge gap and no teams seemed interested in closing it, so the escapees started the day's biggest climb with a gap of 7' to the peloton. With Curvers (+ 5'30 GC) in virtual yellow, he did most of the work in the group to keep the gap on that margin.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_4_2.jpg
At the top of the big climb the gap had decreased to around 6'. Curvers pulled all the climb by himself and collected maximum points on top of it, putting him in virtual KoM lead as well. Nice.

The group arrived to the finish together and in the sprint it was Sky's Jeremy Hunt who took the stage win ahead of Urtasun and Pichot. Curvers was too tired to challenge after all his work and finished second last in the group, 9th.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_4_4.jpg
Yesterday's big loser Nicolas Roche lead home the peloton three and a half minute later, which meant that Schleck easily kept yellow from Curvers. We still had a thing to celebrate though, as Sprick moved up to 10th overall after Contador lost big time today of unknown reason. Rumours says he crashed in the last descent, but nothing has been confirmed.

Nice to see Sprick in Top-10 Smile You hit the right breakaway, that's always a good thing.. Curvers did a lot of work and shouldn't be to disappointed about finishing 9th! The KoM-lead is more important.

sutty68
A podium place is not out of reach yetSad

Good stage from Curvers and good GC jump from Sprick...now just need to gain some time or try to hang on there..

Thanks. It was nice to catch the right break, just too bad the pack decided to start chasing. And I can tell you already now that our chances of a Top 10 overall are slim.

Stage 5: Aubonne - Signal-de-Bougy (ITT)
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_5.png
Stage five is an uphill timetrial, where the overall is expected to be pretty much decided. Schleck has got himself quite a nice gap to the other favourites, so unless he does a terrible timetrial he should be able to hold the leaders jersey. We'll do our best to keep Sprick in the Top 10.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_5_1.jpg
As expected Cancellara crushed all the earlier times, taking the best time to a new level. Was anyone even going to get close?

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_5_2.jpg
Yeah, Cancellara's time proved to be good, but not as unbeatable as usually. A so far disappointing Menchov rode well today, but just came short of taking the lead.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_5_3.jpg
A little while later, we got a new best time! Chris Froome with an excellent time, pushing down Cancellara by a quite large margin of 9 seconds.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_5_4.jpg
We didn't expect Sprick to ride on any good time today and his time was about as expected. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to stay in the Top 10. He's now 24th overall, 35 seconds from the 10.

Fränk Schleck has ridden brilliantly so far in this race and continued that trend today by taking on the course in a great time, easily keeping his jersey.

Pity you lost the Top 10 with Sprick. Are the next stages hard enough to get time in several riders? Good luck Smile

tsmoha
Well, it's hard to do better with a TT-skill of 67 Wink In such a close race, you immediately lose some placements.. let's hope for another succesful break or a chance for Curvers, to defend his KoM-lead.

sutty68
The ITT didn't do you any favours todaySad

Thanks all. The last stage is classified as hilly, but I highly doubt that we can gain back enough time in it.

Stage 6
Champagne - Genève
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_6.png
Looks pretty easy, doesn't it? Not if you ask the race organizers, who has decided to call this stage hilly, even though the climbs comes far out from the finish. The uphill sprint might be the reason, but it's at any percentage at all. Flat stage if you ask me.

Curvers again in the day's early breakaway, together with just one companion, Vicente Reynès (OmegaPharma). Fortunately he wasn't interested in the KoM sprints and handed the points to Curvers without a challenge. KoM jersey secured thanks to this.

Leopard took all the responsibility in the peloton, but allowed the two escapees a big advantage that even touched 10 minutes at one point. They apparently didn't see the two leaders as a threat.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_6_3.jpg
Some other teams eventually started chasing to close down the gap between them and the leaders. Curvers and Reynes cooperated very well though and still held a two minute lead under the 10km-to-go banner.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_6_5.jpg
Their advantage stabilized at around a minute and the two could battle it out for the stage win. Reynes kicked off the sprint as we entered the final kilometer with a tired Curvers waiting to pounce.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/rom_6_6.jpg
Curvers did all he could to jump around Reynes, but the uphill sprint totally emptied him. A strong Reynes profited from that to hold on for the stage win ahead of a disappointed Curvers. He might have missed the stage win, but he got the KoM jersey, which isn't bad at all.

A late team attack from Androni secured Serpa and Vicioso place three and four, plus a 15 second gap to the rest of the peloton, lead home by the strongest rider in this race, Frank Schleck. Sprick finished nicely in 7th place and moved up to 22nd overall.

roturn
So close to a prestigious stage win here. At least Curvers won the KoM ranking.
He and Sprick really rode a great Romandie.

Also congrats for the Lantern Rouge. Wink

dienblad
Too bad Curvers couldn't outsprint Reynes, but is was a difficult task. And it's even more difficult to get the Lantern Rouge than to win a stage!

tsmoha
Close to a win here.. but you hit the right break again and secured the KoM. Nice Smile Also Sprick making it two in stage's Top-10 is very good!

Pellizotti2
@all: Thanks!
@roturn: Yeah, it was a very successful race for us. Much better than I had expected. And Lantern Rouge was actually a goal to keep once Ji got it. Wink
@dienblad: True. Reynes is a much better sprinter.
@tsmoha: Indeed a great race for us. KoM was a big success.

PCM decided to add a race day to this race and call it 5 Jours instead. Either way, the Dunkerque race is held in the north of France, just by the border to Belgium, which means one thing - flat stages. The overall winner is often not a sprinter though, since the race most times also includes one harder stage.

Skil squad:
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_1_1.png
We have no hopes at all for a good result here, since Timmer and Ji are the only riders in our squad with a fitness level of more than 80. The others are here to build up their currently terrible form for our very important goal races next month. So don't expect any results from us here!

Stage 1
Dunkerque - Orchies
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_1.png
The race begins with a flat stage that looks suspiciously similar to the opening one in Albert Achterhes Profronde van Drenthe. Hmm... what can the reason be...

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_1_2.jpg
The stage ended up in an expected mass sprint, where Cofidis managed to set up a perfect sprint train giving Dumoulin a position where he couldn't lose. His leadout man Gallopin even finished third, only passed by FDJ's Hutarovich.
Kittel had to begin the sprint from a bad position and didn't have the legs to advance. Therefore a disappointing 20th place for him here.
Good news for us was that crosswinds splitted the peloton in the end, giving only 26 riders the same time as Dumoulin. Among those were Kittel and Timmer, who both got a nice GC position thanks to this.

Stage 2
Douai - Iwuy
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_2.png
Guess what? Another flat stage! What a surprise!

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_2_1.jpg
A ten man breakaway stayed clear all the way, with Saxobank's Jaroslaw Marycz grabbing the stage win in the sprint ahead of Cheng Ji and Fabio Polazzi. The peloton arrived over 4'30 later, catapulting Ji into yellow! A sneaky attack from Timmer in the final kilometres allowed him to gain a few seconds on the peloton as well, moving him up to 5th overall. What a great day for us!

Stage 3
Caudry - Le Cateau-Cambrésis
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_3.png
As I said, this race often includes a harder stage or two as well as many flat ones. Stage number three might be classified as flat, but the stage is pretty much up and down all the time, ending with a steep uphill sprint. With a hill stat of 58, this is like Alpe d'Huez three times for Ji, who'll do his best to stay in yellow.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_3_1.jpg
As if his weak hill stat didn't cause us enough problems, Ji of course had to get a -4 daily form today. He struggled a lot in the final 10 kilometres and started to fall back a lot.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_3_2.jpg
In the uphill finish it was once again Dumoulin who was the fastest in a tight photofinish against Bakelants and Traksel. Timmer placed best of our riders in 19th, while Ji managed to stay in contact with the back end of the peloton to retain his jersey. Great fighting.

Stage 4
Hazebrouck - Cassel
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_4.png
If you can call this queen stage, then I'm gonna do it. Stage four takes place on a very hard hilly course, with one of the climbs on each lap being cobbled as well. If Mr 51 cobbles Cheng Ji survives this stage, then he truly deserves to keep his jersey.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_4_1.jpg
Unfortunately the stage was much too hard for Ji, who felt back quite early. This time he wasn't able to hang on to the back of the peloton either and was distanced big time. Such a shame after his strong performance yesterday.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_4_2.jpg
A mid-stage attack allowed Ian Stannard to sneak away with the stage win on one of the most messy stages I've ever played. Definitely not a favourite of mine. Stannard's escape companions Vandousselaere and Leezer completed the day's podium, with the latter one also taking the overall lead.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_4_3.jpg
A totally empty Ji arrived over 20 minutes later, losing his yellow jersey and dropping down to 77th in the overall standings. Well, it's hard to do well with a cobbled stat of 51.

Stage 5
Grande Synthe - Dunkerque
i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_5.png
The race ends as it began, with a flat stage looking like one from Albert Achterhes Profronde van Drenthe. With Ji out of yellow, our hopes were now on Kittel to give us a good end to this race.

i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h416/vNibali/skilshimano/5jd_5_1.jpg
A late attack from Francis De Greef and Sebastien Turgot caught the sprint teams with surprise and Turgot managed to just hold off Dumoulin, who caught De Greef and almost stole the stage win in the final metres after an incredible sprint. Race leader Tom Leezer finished in the peloton and secured overall glory, while Kittel once again disappointed in the sprint, finishing 18th.

A few good stages for Skil, at least Wink Mr 51 Cobble and 58 Hill had no chance in this hard stage number 4.. I love that first pic of stage 4 with the "village" in the back.. great fight, a couple of good results.. Kittel a bit disappointing, but at least a Top-15 in Final GC.

lluuiiggii
Nice efforts by Ji, but with medium fitness, 58 hill and 51 cob it's hard to expect anything indeed. A podium and the yellow jersey for 2 days are therefore great achievements to him. Given the team expected nothing in the beginning of the race, it turned out as a good race for Skil.
