Once again great by Abal, only two mountainsstages left you can do it! Just stay with Lecuisinier Blikra in break is goood aswell, hope he can defend his top 30 GC place.
Dombo is on fire, will be fun to follow on those two stages.
As said before thanks for brilliant reporting! |

Argh! Mixed feelings after this read:
Haig finally with a succesful move. It looked good for quite a while, but the big players made it look so easy to pull him back. No notable stage result out of a breakaway hurts a bit, but at least he further improved in the GC today. Ofc due to some luck as well, but his attack surely helped him to finish not too far behind the big guns. Repeat this stuff!
Moving up to 3rd in the U25 ranking is cool. But Olivier and Vose remain possible threats ofc. It's mainly about who will get the lucky break.
Shame about Canty crashing in another GC. No big deal, but he was about to finish somewhere in the Top-50 here. But that is all gone now Lowe did well though.

Don`t do too much.
His loss is still okay and can be explained with his attacks. Just was surprised by how big it is in first hand. |

I was expecting to see more of a fight at the end there, but suddenly the stage was over. Obviously not ideal to be outsprinted by Dombrowski there but this was the stamina stage, so 8 seconds can be accepted. And it was good to see that Schleck instigated the attack - that's exactly what I want him to be doing.
A good day for Goos and Konig too, moving forward and showing that the Top 20 may still be possible. And of course, helpful for the teams classification too.
I thought Haig has found a way clear there, but not to be. Surely bigger names will attack the early breakaway in the next stage?

Seeing that Abal once again was better in the mountains than Lecuisinier I guess I can only be happy that there wasnt any Big gaps, so we can live to fight another day. 7th on the stage is OK, yet again nothing interesting...
A small gap to Velits and a bigger gap to Galta is good, and I guess it is somewhat good that Haig didn't re-open the fight for White by making a Big win here, but can't feel happy about that. I would have loved to see him win.
Jakub Novak clearly still injured, but atleast he looks able to make the top 100 with the form he is in. So as it stands we will only have 2 riders outside the top 100, and hopefully they can all survive the race.

Nope no crash, he was sitting too low then Goos gave it a last push to reel in Haig (10 km left for Olivier)

Thanks Tamijo.
Showing his fail here. Unlucky he couldn`t accelerate to limit the loss.
Hence expectations of another breakaway are big now. |

I thought that Schleck had this sealed from early on, but my, oh, my what a race Dombrowski is having! Wow, what a fight we're having here, super excited for the decisive stage now!

No surprise to see Lecuisinier pass Abal...
Bad stage for him, after Brambilla even if he was infront of him with 2km left, loosing almost 40 sec on him last 2 kms.
Monsalve with a great ride coming scary close to Abal in the GC, just one stage left if he can hold on to his 8th its a very good Vuelta.
And woops Dombrowski in the lead, can Pendleton's handle the pressure on the last mountain stage? |

Wow. Dombro really turned things around! S20 should become a real thriller.
Not good to see Olivier once again picking the perfect breakaway stage. I doubt Haig will counter this move on S20, but hopefully he will defend a still good Top-15 in the GC.

Olivier annoys me for years already.
Mager tried, Arndt tried when he shouldn't have. Too much false flat after the last descent, and he lost a lot late in the final climb.
Still, bar any major mistakes he's set to finish 14th, maybe Olivier will finally not attack and pay for his efforts, but then again this is Aegon.
Didn't think it could get this exciting up front, and even less that a 84mo rider would be Schleck's toughest challenger. Rooting for Andy tomorrow, Dombo has enough years left.

Dombrowski! I can't believe he's going to go away with the win against three 85's

Well I don't know what has happened to Dombrowski, as he has been overperforming again and again in this race, and now with a killer blow. The TT result will remain the most frustrating of all, if he does now win the race. If you don't lead the attacks you lose out, and that was Schleck today - finishing the stage faster, but with too much to make up. That should have been Schleck's best stage of the 3, and now can only hope the race lead loss changes behaviour, as gaining time on a downhill finish becomes much harder. Losing the KoM lead too is unfortunate, but a return to form on the final mountain stage can bring both jerseys back.
Goos into 19th and Konig also closing quickly on 20th place are the only positives I can take from the stage.

For stage 18, that looks like the nail in the coffin considering the teams classification. No good performance from Galta, and some overperformances from Schleck's domestiques makes it at best very difficult to challenge on the final two mountain stages.
The pressure on Galta isn't becoming less, seeing the gap up to 9th place and better just grow bigger, while Monsalve keeps the distance, only being 26 seconds behind. Must admit that no rider top 10 overall will hurt considering we've got both Galta and Guldhammer here.
Also, can't say enough thank you for such reports, Tamijo! Another very entertaining and top quality one, which I must admit I'm getting all used to by now.
For stage 19, what a ride again from Dombrowski! Suddenly it's all on Schleck for that epic stage 20. Looking a lot forward to see how that one plays out.
On the other hand, what a disaster of a stage that was for us Galta with another very bad day, dropping not just behind Monsalve, but even behind Keizer is a huge disappointment. And if we get a proper breakaway on stage 20, even Arndt or Oliver, or even both, could pass him as well. It's a great pity seeing the very few points we suddenly seem to score from the overall, after the race started in a very nice way for especially Galta.
Still one chance to get something from this race in the mountains, but again no intentions from Guldhammer or Nesset to try their breakaway luck, which makes it impossible to get anywhere on the mountain stages. And now with Stake Laengen also staying passive, I'd say it's all the more reason for Nesset/Guldhammer to try.
But that's enough whining! Eventhough it was a bad stage for us, I can't help but look a lot forward to that stage 20, simply because of the fight we should see for the overall win. Schleck must still be the favourite, seeing his early dominance in this race, but Dombrowski is really proving everyone wrong, kind of always punching above his weight in the mountains. |
