Well, there are plenty of riders that have more chance (In My Opinion) than Scarponi. Talansky, Westra, Quintana, Porte, Van Garderen and Gesink still have more chance.
Scarponi does have a chance, but it's not for sure that he wins it
Also, Schleck rides Tirreno.
Can't see Gesink gains 1 minute or more on guys like Talansky and Van Garederen in Lure stage...
With all the tricky stages in thenext Giro, I hope he'll be more careful than today
I don't know. Depends a bit on how the stage turns out.
I can see him winning some time on Talansky at the Col D'Eze TT too, maybe also a bit on Van Garderen, but not sure about that.
But I agree, Gesink isn't the main favourite anymore, maybe an outsider...

Why? Gesink is a better climber than him I think, and they might be equal at the flatter/less steeper parts of the climb. Gesink improved his TT in the winter too...

Talansky recovers better from a week of efforts, is massively better in the less steep stuff and there's not much hard climbing in that TT.
As for Gesink improving his TT, I'd love to know what in the world you're basing that on

You might be right about the less steep stuff thing, I don't have that much knowledge about Talansky
Well, Gesink said something about that he improved his TTing in the winter, I'm pretty sure of that.
I must admit that now I google it, I can't find it, so I probably mixed it up with another rider.
Still, I think Gesink can be faster than Talansky. We will see who's right soon, although I'm not 100% sure anymore

Isn't that what the Schlecks, Basso, Cunego and every other GT contender with a bad timetrial say every year?

Here's a time trial with two similar climbs, 2 months after Talansky's first race as a pro. He's improved massively since then. Compare Gesink and Talansky's times
https://www.cqrank...ceid=20073
Here's last year, a time trial that's similar to this one. Notice Talansky's result.
https://www.cqrank...ceid=22042
And of course the Vuelta TT last year with a climb in the middle, although that climb wasn't a lot like this one (it was harder)

Hmm, especially that Romandië TT was indeed strong. All those TTs were quite a lot longer than this one though. And the third link is a sprinters stage of the 'Ronde van België'
The Romandië TT seems to have to do a bit with form though, I don't think the Top-Tier GT riders peaked for that, while it looks that Talansky did.
But I admit, I'm impressed
Edit: And the avatar, it was just the first thing that I came up with.(Just typed Rabobank 2012 on Googla Images I think) I didn't pay any attention to it though. I'm not a huge Gesink fan, I like personalities of guys like Mollema better.

Wiggins certainly wasn't in bad form, and Talansky matched him on the stage that suited him the most.
No way Gesink will beat him up Col d'Eze. Tbh, I don't even consider Gesink a top 3 contender for that stage. Talansky, Van Garderen, Westra, Porte, Peraud and Velits are all names I'd pick over him for that stage.

It's interesting reading those TT results from isso with Porte also featuring pretty high on those lists as well as Talansky. I think we should get three days of aggressive racing now, hoping to see some tomorrow as I can watch it.

I'm not going to argue that Gesink will be faster than Talansky, because he won't. But you can't use those time trials as arguments.
In both of the time trials they both rode Gesink was pretty close. One thing they also have in common, is that they have both ups, downs and flat sections.
Col d'Èze has no downhill section, and as we all know Gesink sucks going downhill.
issoisso wrote:
Also, ruben to make his stereotypical post explaining that Gesink is not a bad descender in 3...2...1....
Put those factors together, and it could actually be close between Gesink and Talansky in the TT. |

Plus: I believe they all work on their timetrial in the winter but making much progress is very hard. So I can't really see Gesink improving much more in his timetrial.
Basso is the only one who made notable progress around 2005 influenced by two factors. Riis made him do long technical descents from mountains with his timetrial bike every week to improve his technique. And a certain doctor from Madrid.
