Probably win stage 20? Lulz. That means he would have to finish alone which wont happen |

If he's not too tired, he could win the sprint to the line.

Odds are pretty high that Valv would finish with him if he comes to the line in 5-10 man group or something like that |

I have to admit that i had my doubts about Dumoulin, but after today, i think Aru is the one who needs to pull the miracle, if he wants to win this Vuelta. While Dumoulin is probably very confident . |

A couple of observations:
1/ What was Astana thinking today? They should never ever ride at the front. When Purito went why go after him. Let Giant/Dumoulin do the work
2/ Astana team didn't look strong at all today. Landa should be in the first group, Sanchez no where to be seen...
3/ Tomorrow's stage is made for Dumoulin, cobbles up a hill where you need weight and watts. He should attack...
4/ Aru didn't look that strong today, he could not sustain long attacks. It was not just Dumoulin, he couldn't put real distance to many other rides, which he will need to do to drop Dumoulin. On some of the mountain stages he fizzled at the end as well.
5/ Dumoulin did not blink at all, all the time directly on the wheel of Aru. Don't underestimate the power of the red jersey...
6/ What I like most about Dumoulin is that he starts acting like a boss. The only thing missing was a pat on the back of Aru saying "good effort son". This must be utterly demoralizing. |

1. Astana knows that Giant can't do it. So they have to do it, trying to win the Vuelta. They / AR have to win (favourites), Dumoulin not as he was the outsider.
2. Thought about it that there are riders in that team that don't want Aru to win (Landa, probably LSS)?
3. And when Dumoulin does, please let the others look at Aru, not trying to close the gap for the Italian.
4. Correct, But that doesn't mean Aru can't do that in the last stages. Remember the Giro, with a bad stage and a great the day after (almost pulling a Landis, but of course, Aru is clean...).
5. He's strong, very strong.
6. A boss, not an arrogant prick. 2 different things

Avila tomorrow. It's been way way too long the Vuelta has gone there. 6 years.. Should never be more than 3. So much tradition.

Great photo Spilak from the good old days when riders didn't have to wear silly helmets unless they wanted to and it also added greater character to the sport. |

totally agree. The days without helmets were much better. Especially on mtf's

Yeah. Great photo, where the riders showed little kids, that riding without a helmet is just way cooler.
No, seriously now. I wear a helmet, even when I ride to my grandma(500m). Its great that helmets are forced now. Some aero helmets look stupid to me as well, but there are still good looking helmets out there. Riding without one is a no-go for me. Doesn't matter if your on a race bike, a MTB, a CX, a damn fixie, a BMX or a simple commuter. Bike helmets probably saved me from death at least once and from simple headaches more than 50 times already. I get this nostalgia thing, but bike helmets have their place in bike races. They made racing much safer.

Besides the actual mountain finish, every other mountain you go up, you have to come down.

You realise bike races have descents too? Do you remember why helmets became mandatory?

Way too much stupid-looking, wind-formed hair. They all look like straight out of a wind tunnel. Thank god for helmets.

Yeah but if they are going to wear them for the rest of the race was there really a point taking them off for an MTF?
Also teams have helmet sponsors who I am sure would be much happier having rider wear there products on the biggest stages.

Agree, a good death or career ending injury really gives you the excited warm fuzzies doesn't it?
Spoiler Sorry, that sounded less dark in my head

15/08/22 - SotD said "Your [jandal's] humour is overrated"
11/06/24 - knockout said "Winning is fine I guess. Truth be told this felt completely unimportant."
