Great ride by Scarponi to nearly catch Conta. But why were the commentators constantly mentioning what turned out to be about 50 metres of gravel?

Yes. Less so, because sprinting is such a short, sharp event, rather than an attack followed by minutes of nothing on a mountain, but still fairly boring.
