Three in a row would have been too awesome. So 2nd is yet another nice stage result by Gomez "3rd Week" Marchante.
18th in the GC now and pretty secured KoM is nice.
Feel sorry for Wikipedia with that crash/injury. |

Incredible Giro for Jose Alarcon, finishing with Cunego he shows that he really does have the legs to go with the very best climbers in the world.
No stage wins means my goal is down the drain but I have to be satisfied with an amazing GC 4th place. Eager to see Jose's competition in the Vuelta a Espana - that course will suit him better. I am thinking Tenorio but not sure who else will be there.
Really enjoyed this race - reignited a lot of passion for the ManGame - GTours do that to you I think.. Always a tour de force for the reporter I have been there and this was great work as always.
Last stage TT's tend to be for GC men - Cunego has been known to win them not this year but surely he has done enough to win yet another Giro - amazing from the veteran.

I think the Giro is now Cunegos, knowing that he can't lose 2 minutes on the TT and he can't really crash, but phew when Pluchkin went.

Antón with a nice performance there, can't ask for more at all. Shame to see Denifl crash out from the top 10.
And well done to Cunego, surely he can't lose more than two minutes in a 29 kilometers long TT.
Thanks for another entertaining report, SN, they've been great through the whole Giro. |

Gomez Marchante has been all over this race!
It looks like the GC is set for the most part (aside from Trofimov maybe bumping up). I have to say I'm very disappointed in Nibali. He was getting dropped the whole race, never went on the attack, and didn't finish even close to the top-5 like I had expected. Overall it was a pretty anonymous race for us. Anyway, looks like another one for Cunego!

I am really happy with the 3rd week from Rujano. 8th place is great after his problems in the first mountain stage of the race. Nice to see I was lucky enough seeing him avoid all crashes unlike some of his rivals as well as him accomplishing my race goal of achieving top 10 overall here.
Big congrats to Rin and rjc, they are clear and deserved winners of this race. And lastly once again big thanks to SN for fast-paced and entertaining reports. Now I will enjoy that last stage, hopefully nothing special will happen.

That sucks to see Denifl go like that. I was looking forward to the time trial duel between him and VDB. So my hope now is that he can gain the 90 seconds or whatever it is to overtake Rujano. Our rider was brilliant in the precious TT so I have hopes that he can give it a real go.

^ Is that more or less what you expected from this Count?
Very interesting to follow this different VDB season approach.

I expected a top 10 or at least top 12. I was going to go with the same week long stage race approach as you did last season but this course really suited him with the number of TT kilometres and less climbing than some courses. Not only that but I had VDHH who can perform much the same role and is in fact better on some of the week long courses. So I thought I'd take a gamble on a GT because quite frankly I need the points and won't be getting too many points in the other 2 gts.

Great report as always. Congrats to Tinkoff boys, nice Giro for them too. And Gomez Marchante is on the spree! From Metinvest point of view, Popovych is slightly underperforming in mountains, but top 20 is sure and that is still great for our first GT, especially with aging leader.
Fingers crossed for good form of Ignatiev in last stage, but i think recovery will play vital role, so top10 would be nice.

It could be close, but Rujano needs to have a really bad day, as well as van den Broeck a really great one, to give it a real go. If nothing special happen, Rujano should win that duel easily overall, 71 TT vs 75 TT isn't that big gap for that type of distance to make it happen.

All in all, a good Giro for Vesuvio. It didn't help that all my young GC hopes crashed and injured themselves early on, but at least Shikai and Kirsch made it into mountain breakaways.
And breakaways is where the team really stepped up, particularly the puncheurs Paterski and Gastauer. Both taking a 2nd place on a stage, Top 50 in GC, and for Paterski a brief lead and 3rd overall in the KoM competiton.
Couldn't really ask for any more given my line up. Nice to see 3 Jaguar loanees complete the race too! Teklehaimanot, Anguilet and Reguigui. The first injured, the second on the best classified team, and the third a rare Rothaus finisher.

Brambilla in 14th is ok considering how things went down in the mountains. That and a few stage podiums make for a decent Giro in the end.
Thanks for the great pace of the reports!

Well thank you SN for the great reporting throughout. I guess it was an exciting race, I didn't expect Cunego to win afterall. I'm still disappointed though as we were anonymous through the entire race, and Nibali had a pretty poor showing. Oh well.

And you were right, though I thought it would be closer than that.
Overall a satisfying GT debut for us with VDB finishing inside the top 10 and Zingle having some decent stage results. Wellens in the top 40 and 4th in the young rider classification is a bonus too. This result means that rather than just trying to avoid losing points on the other relegation contenders, we might on fact gain a little bit of room over some of them.

Thanks fo all the reports SN and for a chance to compete in the GT, it was a huge honour for Metinvest in a tough season. I think we were worthy part of it, with opening stage win and Popovych in top20 GC. Sorry for the Ignatiev crashes, he somehow forgot how to ride in such a stuffed pack of stars.
Congrats to succesful teams!
