Oh, lovely news! Perfect reason to revisit the place where I lived for a year!

No. Giro should begin in Italy. Tour in France. Vuelta in Spain.

Not sure, although it should stay close to its borders I think, or be called something else.
Tour (or Giro or Vuelta) means "around", but doesn't indicate, at least in French, whether it means the in or outside of what it is around, so I'm fine with places across the borders.
Much less with Ireland or Denmark for Giro, or talks of New York or Gulf for Tour de France.

Still, I think that it's getting way too out of hand. The GTs won't even be in their home country at all in some years.

Technically, a start in British Cornwalls, then heading to Dover, crossing Belgium, Luxembourg, South-West Germany, Suisse, Italy, Monaco and Spain (and a last exhibit stage in Jersey) could still be a Tour de France, with a half decent course. |

What happened to Acquarone's promises of short transfers?

Well Acquarone only said that for 2013 I believe.
Here's a quote kinda saying that Acquarone wants Giro to be ''international'' : “I would like to touch all the European countries,” he said. “We would like to take the Giro show every two or three years to other countries and grow the Giro.”
Also I think the main point of reducing transfers when he said so, was to reduce the transfers in Italy a lot. With going to another country, you at least have a rest day in between.

These rest days in the Giro are placed quite stupid imo. It's a rest day, not a transfer day. Last year, the rest day was after a prologue and 2 flat stages. Totaly not necessary (except for the transfer ofcourse). Think it was 3 stages before the first stages, then 12 before the second and 6 stages after the second. Think it is way smarter to have rest days after about 7 days and after about 14 days. I know they can't have rest days during the weekend but they can be placed much better. Just for the comfort of the riders, stay in Italy or around it. Just make sure you don't need rest days after two flat stages and a prologue cause they don't really have any use then.

@Spilak The UCI have brought in a regulation now requiring at least 5 days of racing before a rest day. Interesting to see how the Giro gets around that with a start in Ireland!

Yep, there's no way Ireland will have 5 race days though.
A prologue in Belfast I guess. Belfast - Dundalk and Dundalk - Dublin. That's just rough idea where stage 2 will end. Either there'll be transfer day from Ireland to Italy without rest day or Acquarone asking for exception or something.

... And the UCI caving because they are spineless.
And as Spilak said, it is a rest day not a transfer day.

Yep, I am just saying there'll be possibly no rest day. So example, stage 3 ends in Ireland at 2pm, than riders go on flight at 4/5, get to Italy around 7. And prepare for next stage next morning. So no rest day, just time between one day and other to transfer to Italy.
That's quite unlikely though, and could come in effect only possibly if the UCI really stand to the 5 days of racing before a rest day though.

about the Giro etc.
Its great to spread the race, but not that far.
The Tour gets it right by rarely going outside a neighboring country.
But also the Vuelta goes too far the other way. It never seems to start outside Spain, and this does hurt is global appeal.

The Vuelta started in the Netherlands in 2009. But that was the first time since 1997 since it started out of Spain so yeah, they don't do it a lot.
