Stage 16 [IMG-r]https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/profil16.png[/IMG-r]
Orthez - Gourette-Col d'Aubisque
218.5 km
Wednesday 25 July
After the well-earned final rest day in Pau and with five days still to go to Paris, the riders were not yet done with the Pyrenees, or rather, the Pyrenees were not yet done with the Tour riders. Stage 16 had four difficult climbs on the program, including the hors catégorie Port de Larrau, a steep 14.5-kilometre monster that lead the Tour for a short visit into Spain, then a finish atop the hors catégorie Col d'Aubisque. Today's finish was last seen two years ago, when Cadel Evans was first across.
The stage started with 13 riders launching themselves off the front. By the time the race had reached the top of the first climb, the breakaway had shrinked to seven, and surviving until the foot of the final climb to the Col d'Aubisque was only one man: Dmitri Fofonov of Crédit Agricole.
A hot day in the saddle for the breakaway.
The lone leader Fofonov had five minutes' advantage on the peloton as he begun his battle with the Aubisque. Behind him, Discovery Channel and Rabobank, the teams of Alberto Contador and Michael Rasmussen, respectively, were drilling the pace as they approached the final climb. This was their last chance to break the race leader, Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana).
Discovery Channel and Rabobank with some serious intentions. Was Vinokourov feeling the pressure?
If Rasmussen and Contador were to have any chance against Vinokourov in the final time trial, the attacks had to start early as they needed a lot of time over the race leader. And as expected, we didn't have to wait long for it to kick off.
Just like three days ago, on the climb to Plateau de Beille, Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank) and Carlos Sastre (Team CSC) opened the hostilities!
Sastre couldn't hang onto Rasmussen for long, as the Dane settled into a ferocious rhythm. He had 10 kilometres in which to shatter Vinokourov's yellow dream.
Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank) blowing past the one remaining rider from this morning's breakaway, Dmitri Fofonov (Crédit Agricole).
Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel), second overall, tried to go after Rasmussen, but couldn't get away from the slightly panicking yellow jersey group. The pace was lifted in response to the Chicken's daring attack, and a lot of riders were put into trouble. Including...
...the yellow jersey! Alexandre Vinokourov was struggling at the back of the group!
When seeing the race leader in severe pain, Contador sensed an opportunity and kicked again!
The young Spaniard firing another bullet at Vino's group.
This was the final straw for Alexandre Vinokourov, who let go of the favourites' group. He had finally cracked!
The race radio went ballistic as the previously impregnable Kazakh was losing time.
Meanwhile up the road, the determined Rasmussen was pulling out a huge advantage! His gap down to Contador and the others was approaching two minutes as the summit drew closer.
Could a yellow jersey be waiting at the top of the Aubisque?
The Astana team held back Andrey Kashechkin to pace the yellow jersey, while Andreas Klöden was given a free rein for once.
Vinokourov had to gather all the strength he could find to defend the Maillot Jaune.
In his pursuit of Rasmussen, Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel) was leaving a lot of road between himself and the other team leaders, and an even bigger gap down to Vinokourov.
The Spanish climber had a chance to pass Vinokourov in the overall standings.
But the rider gaining the most at the summit of the Col d'Aubisque was Denmark's Michael Rasmussen. The lanky Rabobank climber never slowed down, and was way out of reach for everybody else as he claimed a memorable double victory: the stage and the yellow jersey!
An astonishing performance by the Chicken!
The sparkling Contador also had a great day, and stayed ahead of the rest to take second place. Despite his great showing, he still came in two minutes behind Rasmussen.
Rounding out the stage podium was Germany's Andreas Klöden, who had his best day in the Tour so far. Klöden's Astana team leader Alexandre Vinokourov finished more than four minutes down on Rasmussen. He has lost his yellow jersey and, who knows, maybe the race overall.
The Col d'Aubisque proved too hard for the Maillot Jaune.
The new race leader Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank) showed incredible panache today, attacking with 10 kilometres left to climb, and leaving everybody else for dead. He has been threatening to do something like this ever since he outclimbed the favourites on the way up to Tignes on stage 8, and today he showed what he really can do in the high mountains.
Best of the rest was Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel), who is rewarded with the polkadot jersey to go with his white one.
Alexandre Vinokourov is down to 3rd overall, 3'48 behind the lead, and could have a hard task overturning Rasmussen in the final time trial. But history has shown that one must never discount the Kazakh.

Yey
Well, that was quite a unexpected result with Vino cracking big time. Should bring some emotion to the TT. If Vino regains his strength there, judging by the results of the first TT, he should have enough to pass Contador, but I don't think so about Rasmussen. Though it's a considerably flatter TT, so anything could happen!
Btw, on the profile picture miniature, did you try converting the image to RGB before resizing? (if you have Photoshop, Image -> Mode -> RGB) It could help with the pixelation

Thanks for the comments!
After having very little time on my hands during the last few months, and some lacking motivation (it takes ages making one of these reports), I've finally gotten around to finishing the story. Sorry for the delay!

Stage 17 [IMG-r]https://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/tour07/profil17.png[/IMG-r]
Pau - Castelsarrasin
188.5 km
Thursday 26 July
The fighters, the sprinters and the teams with little success so far... Many riders were hoping for victory as they set out on the slightly hilly stage 17, favourable for attacks.
The stage began without Erik Zabel (Milram) and twelve others who abandoned on yesterday's mountain stage to Col d'Aubisque. The first hour saw the attacks fly right and left, and when a breakaway finally was established, it counted eleven riders.
The big break of the day heading north, away from the mountains.
Among those hunting for a stage win were Stuart O'Grady (Team CSC), José Luis Arrieta (Ag2r), Michael Albasini (Liquigas) and French national hero Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Télécom).
With the peloton having a day off after the Pyrenean hardships, Voeckler put all his strentgh into an attack on his breakaway companions on the last categorized climb, situated 19km from the finishing line in Castelsarrasin.
Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Télécom) made his move on the 4th category Côte de la Montagnère.
The popular Frenchman won the hearts of the nation by holding on to the Maillot Jaune for ten days back in 2004, but has yet to win a Tour de France stage. Now he had his great chance!
Caisse d'Epargne's strongman José Vicente Garica Acosta took off in pursuit of Voeckler. Latched on to his wheel was the youngest rider in the Tour, Welshman Geraint Thomas (Barloworld). This could hamper the Spaniard's efforts, as he would be concerned about the rider on his wheel as well as the rider in front of him.
José Vicente Garcia Acosta (Caisse d'Epargne) hunting his second ever Tour de France stage with Tour rookie Geraint Thomas (Barloworld) on his wheel.
Even though Thomas soon began taking turns with Garcia Acosta, the gap kept going out. Voeckler was just too strong!
Voeckler pulling further away from his breakaway companions.
In only a few kilometres, Voeckler had put more than a minute into the others. When entering the streets of Castelsarrasin, he could soak up the moment. He had won his first ever Tour de France stage!
A very emotional victory in Castelsarrasin.
As Thomas Voeckler stretched his arms in the air, the crowd went ballistic. This was the most popular stage winner in the 2007 Tour de France!
Voeckler's two chasers were brought back by the rest of the breakaway, which was led over the line by Stuart O'Grady (Team CSC). When the peloton finally arrived, Tom Boonen (Quickstep - Innergetic) edged a few points closer to Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole) in the green jersey competition, and is now only one single point behind. Maybe he'll finally get it back tomorrow?

The battle for the Top 5 will be tough, as Evans will likely move into about 4th after the TT, but Sastre and Valverde are both not known for their TT ability so that could be close.

It looks like the green jersey will only be settled after Paris. Go Boonen
Btw, great shot with the break passing by a castle

Aye, this is reminiscent of the Cooke/McEwen duel in 2003. It's nice to have a source for excitement before and after the time trial as well.
And thanks! A bit of a cliché background, though

I just noticed this has returned - for a while - but keep it going, four stages till the end, Rasmussen looking good.
