This is going to be a good finale! If he wins, will he go for the Giro next year? And will he ever switch teams? |

I don't know his calendar for next year yet, it will depend on wildcards. He still has a contract with Colombia. I will try to switch teams at the end of this season, to test if it works (and switch back).
If it works, he will definitely switch teams. If not, I will try to build Team Colombia around him (making it a Colombian-Spanish team) |

I think teams like Euskaltel or Movistar would be good. Maybe AG2R or FDJ as well |

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep it in mind. But I'll wait for other transfers because by then it'll be 2014 |

Vuelta à España 2012 - Stage 20
His smartest race yet!
- Roberto Velásquez' coach 08/09/2012
The final uphill finish. It was a matter of holding on.
The team was immensely protective of the jersey and allowed not a single breakaway.
Roberto may have been a shy person, but he definitely made up in his ambitiousness and his inexhaustible lust for glory. He made an attack on Sanchez' KoM jersey in the final mountain stage!
At the final climb, the battle began.
Roberto raced very maturely, racing his own pace.
Contador seemed to have gone to still make something of his Vuelta.
Sanchez and Roberto followed, fighting a battle of their own.
Cobo and Rodriguez were even further behind.
Some die-hard fans were supporting Sanchez.
Contador took the win!
A battle for the KoM Jersey. For Sanchez it was about saving his Vuelta, getting a jersey. For Roberto it was something else, it was the fourth jersey!
What a performance of young Roberto Velásquez. The already two last in the classification finished together, 46 minutes behind Contador.

Vuelta à España 2012 - Stage 21
We did it!
- Roberto Velásquez 09/09/2012 -
The profile of the final stage and the result of 2011.
We take you back one day. The evening of September the 8th, 2012. André Greipel's room. A knock on the door. "Come in," said Greipel.
A shy young man entered the room. It was Roberto Velásquez.
Greipel asked him what he wanted. The shy man answered he was pretty sure that Greipel would win the final stage. Greipel was flattered, but didn't see the point in Roberto coming to tell him. But Roberto wanted to choreograph his greatest achievement yet, and Greipel was very eager to help him with it. The result: a mythical picture!

Young Classification
Winner of the Team Classification
Movistar Team!
This performance reminded the world of Eddy Merckx. He had stunned the world at his first TDF, winning all three classifications. Roberto won all three classifications in his first Grand Tour, maybe even a greater achievement. In the Vuelta, only Jalabert and Rominger had done it before. So the world was warned. Not all Roberto's Grand Tours would go so smoothly, he had the element of surprise. But this promised to be one hell of a rider:
Cannibal 2.0
This concludes our story of Roberto's first Grand Tour. In the next chapter we will discuss his first experience of a World Championship. He also became a star, and had to get used to that!
Hope you'll stay tuned for the rest of his incredible story!

The following is for those who don't mind quite a read, for those who do, I will summarize in the spoiler down below.
Interview September 2012
This interview was probably more important to the journalist than to Roberto himself. Why? Because it was the first important task of young reporter Ian Butler, indeed, my first task! This was the first time I interviewed someone like him. And I was even luckier, as Roberto was a shy person, he had a select group of reporters he talked to. I was one of them, I would interview him many times over the years.
Ian Butler: Roberto Velásquez, first of all, thanks for being with us today.
Roberto Velásquez: Thank you for making time to welcome me.
Ian Butler: It's been a few days since your overall victory at the Vuelta à España. Tell me, has it sunk in yet?
Roberto Velásquez: Well, it's starting to, yet I'm afraid it never really will. It's all been like a strange dream, all of it. I prepared well for it and expected a good race, but this? Never.
Ian Butler: You stunned the world by taking on talents like Contador, Rodriguez, Wiggins...
Roberto Velásquez: I hear that a lot, but I keep saying: they weren't in their best form. Anyway, I thought it was a great battle and I really enjoyed it. It was my first Grand Tour and it was extremely hard, but immensely satisfying at the same time.
Ian Butler: You wrote history, by taking 4 jerseys. You really left no crumbs for the competition, did you?
Roberto Velásquez: I just gave everything I can. I was very lucky at times, like that really off-day from Contador. I hadn't won the Vuelta if it weren't for days like those.
Ian Butler: How's your relationship with your coach? We heard it has been a mixed story so far, since you joined the team.
Roberto Velásquez: There were some misunderstandings at first, that's true. I'm still not very used to riding in a professional peloton. I'm still learning all the rules. But winning that Vuelta, it made the whole team shine, coaches, riders, technicians...
Ian Butler: Your effort will most likely guarantee the team a place in the Pro Tour. Does the team have plans for promotion?
Roberto Velásquez: You should better ask the management that, but I think they are. We've been attracting some young talent but also some Spanish riders like Nieve. I think we're ready. Of course, for me it would mean a lot, I could enter a lot of races I'd like to ride.
Ian Butler: Tour de France?
Roberto Velásquez: It's best if I don't answer that right now. (smiles)
Ian Butler: Speaking of which, say the team reaches Pro Tour level, what races do you ride? I imagine a lot of race organizers would like to have you at their race. After all, you're a new-found celebrity at the moment.
Roberto Velásquez: That's all flash, of course. I hope establish my fame by keep performing at top level. But to answer your question, I'd like to return to the Vuelta, it's been very kind to me. I'd also love to ride the hilly classics, and the Tour Down Under. But of course, that's all speculation. First we need that promotion, then I need to sit down with the management and the coach(es).
Ian Butler: Can you tell our readers something about your personal life?
Roberto Velásquez: Listen, Ian, is it? I'll make you a deal
Ian Butler: I'm listening.
Roberto Velásquez: You never ask me about my private life, and I guarantee you an exclusive interview if I ever win Tour De France.
Ian Butler: That's a deal! Permit me one last question: you sound very ambitious.
Roberto Velásquez: I'm sorry, is that the question? (laughs) Well, I guess I am. I'm out for all I can take, and I'll do everything in my power to reach my goals. I hope I can still progress and become an even better rider.
Ian Butler: The Cannibal 2.0
Roberto Velásquez: (laughs)
Ian Butler: Thanks for this interview, latest Vuelta winner and promising talent, Roberto Velásquez.
Roberto Velásquez: Thank you.
For those who don't like long texts
Spoiler This was just an interview with Roberto. He's saying he's glad with the win, that he's out for anything he can get and that Team Colombia will most likely get a promotion, allowing him to make a nice calendar in 2013. |
