Stage 17: 230 kilometres long from Feltre to Tirano, with the last 80km being difficult. First the Passo del Tonale (15.2km, 6.0%) wit the summit 64km from the finish, and finally the Aprica (15.4km, 3.1%). The summit of the Aprica is only 18.5km from the finish, with a 11km downhill. Looks like a stage for a breakaway to win (hey, it's been some stages ago since that happened!).
A 14-man group get away, and I'm not gonna bother you with all their names (I didn't feel like writing them all down). Francesco Masciarelli (Astana) wins the Intermediate sprint in front f Mauricio Ardila (Geox) and Guillaume Bonnafond (AG2R). The peloton is 9 minutes back.
The group stays together at the Passo del Tonale. It's Movistar's Marzio Bruseghin who takes the points, followed by Ardila and Sergey Lagutin (Vacansoleil).
The peloton reaches the summit with 4'39 back. Francis de Greef and Wilco Kelderman have done all the work and the group stays together.
Then a crash in the descend. GC's number 6 Peter Velits goes down hard and it takes some time for him to get on his bike again. A broken collarbone is feared, but luckily the Slowakian can finish the stage. He will loose 4'36 to the group of favourites, but stays in 6th position.
After a long descend, the peloton starts to climb the Aprica, a long climb but with no high gradients. But as soon as the climb as started, everybody starts to attack. It's Alexandre Vinokourov (yep, he's in this Giro, never seen him before :cool who tries to create a gap, and he's counterattacked by who else than Nicholas Roche (GC 5), and José Rujano (GC 2). So also Alberto Contador (GC 3) and Igor Antón (GC 4) try to folllow.
Rob Ruijgh and Jelle Vanendert set up a high pace and 7km later, they're all caught. Then Rujano and Contador try again with 23km to go.
Bruseghin, Lagutin and Rabo's Bauke Mollema are the only three eraly leaders that are still in front at the summit of the Aprica, with Mauro Santambrogio (BMC) '24 back. 18.5km to go.
1'22 behind the leaders we see Alberto Contador all alone at the summit. He has a 22 second gap to the group of favourites.
With 5km to go, the 4 leaders are still up front, but the advantage is only '40. Contador has been caught, thanks to the hard work of Jelle Vanendert.
Santambrogio has to let the 3 others go: cramp attack! Bruseghin has to fight against 2 riders from Dutch teams and knows he doesn't stand a chance. So he tries to surprise them with an early sprint. The chasing group won't catch them anymore.
It's an easy win for Bauke Mollema! A great ride by the young Dutch rider. Lagutin takes second for Vacansoleil and Bruseghin 3rd. The group of favourites follows at '36.

Word from the DS: Strange Latin (and Irish) cyclists.... Attack at every part of the road that goes slightly up. Oh well, another stage down, 4 to go.

You're right: best Italian in the GC is Pinotti in 11th. Basso is terrible out of form, although he has improved during this Giro. And the other good Italians (Garzelli, Pozzovivo, Scarponi, Nibali) don't participate for various reasons.
Think we'll see some Italians going for the win in the Vuelta!

Oh no, almost finished the report of stage 18......hit the wrong button. Don't feel like doing it again, so a short one:
A 12-man group gets away. While climbing the Passo di Ganda, Gesink creates a gap. Antón and Contador react a little later, and finally Rujano and Roche join them. After the summit, others come back. So when that group has reached the breakaways, 30 riders sprint for the win, and the picture says it all. Contador thinks he's gonna win, but Roche beats himon the line. Gesink finishes in 10th, Vanendert is also in this group.

Stage 19, 209km from Bergamo to Macugnana with 2 climbs: the Mottarone (1st category 13.8km, 6.2%) and the final climb to Macugnana (3rd category, 28.2km, 3.9%).
8 riders get away and have a maximum advantage of 5 minutes: Tankink (Rab), Spilak (Lam), Santambrogio (BMC), Ardila (Geo), Cataldo (QSt), Castroviejo (Eus), Feillu (Leo) and Bisolti (Far). They get ranked in the Intermediate sprint in that order.
The BOTD stays together in the ascend of the Mottarone. Bisolti gets the most points, followed by Santambrogio and Tankink. The gap is still 5 minutes.
The long climb to Macugnana has started. WIth 22km to go, Alberto Contador decides that the only way to win this Giro is to attack. The other favourites ride up the mountain with a high pace. The gap to the leading group is only 2'17.
With 15km to go, Contador has closed the gap to the leading group and immediately takes the lead of the group. He is followed by Luis Leon Sanchez (Rabo), the only rider who wanted to follow his jump. The chasing group is only '35 back.
11km remaining and the leading group has been caught.
LL Sanchez attacks with 10km to go. But he can't create a gap.
It's Contador again! 6600 metres to the finish and again no-one reacts.
Rujano, Gesink and Antón have found each other in the chase. The gap varies between 25 and 35 seconds.
Gesink leads the chase with 2.5km to go. However, he can't close it down.
With only 1km left, Contador knows he's gonna win the stage and some valuable seconds!
A great ride by El Pistolero, he looks much stronger than in the first two weeks of this Giro!
Robert Gesink wins the sprint for the 2nd place, in front of Rujano and Peter Velits. Vanendert finishes in 20th place, after doing some hard work catching Contador. But he jumps over Van den Broeck in the GC, who lost almost 6 minutes today!
Results: 1st stage win for Contador!

The winner:
Word from the DS: Those are 48 seconds we didn't want to loose. I think Gesink needs 2 minutes before the time trial to be sure of the win before the ITT, so he can't loose anymore time. I think we have to gain some time tomorrow. The Finestre suits Geisnk better than Macugnana!

I think 2'20'' is enough, so you have to watch Contador on the next stage Good luck!

Stage 20: The last mountain stage from Verbania to ski-resort Sestriere, a 242km long stage with the feared Colle delle Finestre in it. The ascend is 18.5km long with an average gradient of 9.2% and maximum gradient of 14%. The last 8km of the climb are unpaved with gravel roads!
After a short descend, the riders have to gain another 500 height metres to ski-resort Sestriere. The last climb of this Giro is 16.2km long with an average gradient of 3.8%.
We go straight away to the climbing of the Finestre. The 3 early leaders Johnny Hoogerland, Alessandro Bisolti and Maurizio Bruseghin have been caught and the peloton gets smaller and smaller.
With 6 climbing kilometres to go, the leading group is only 15 riders big!
Irish Nicholas Roche is the first to attack, 3km from the summit. No one can or wants to react.
The GC's number 5 gets the most KOTM-points.
29 seconds later, Robert Gesink wins the sprint for the points, followed by Igor Antón and José Rujano. Alberto Contador is struggling!
Igor Antón closes the gap to Roche in the descend.
The two have an advantage of 20 seconds to Rujano and Gesink. Contador follows at 57 seconds.
The first 4 riders have come together and they've started to work together to don't let Contador return in the leading group. With 5km to go, El Pistolero is 31 seconds back.
Roche has paid for his early attack and drops back a bit. COntador is 52 seconds back with 1km to go.
José Rujano takes his third stage win this Giro! He outsprints Antón and Gesink.
Contador finishes ´45 back in 6th place, behind Roche and the surprising Steven Kruijswijk. It looks like he has lost the Giro!

Word from the DS: YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only the last ITT left, so 31.5km that keeps Gesink from winning his and our first GT. No way he'll lose 1'51 to Rujano and 3'13 to Contador.
And besides the points and U25 jersey, he also wins the KOTM-rankings!
31.5km to go..........

Gesink will win! But it will be tough to keep Vanendert in the top ten with Kruiswijk riding very good to Sestriere.

It's time trial time! The 21st and last stage, finishing near the famous Duomo at the historical Piazza Duomo. 31.5km long, almost flat.
To remind you all, these are the standings before the stage:
1 Robert Gesink Monster Energy - Ford 89h44'36 2 José Rujano Androni Giocattoli + 1'51 3 Alberto Contador Saxo Bank SunGard + 3'13
German Bert Grabsch is the first to set a great time: 47'43.
Joost Posthuma is '36 slower than the German HTC-rider, which means the 31st place in the stage rankings. With this time, he's the 2nd best Monster Energy-rider. And to be honest, all the others pretty muched f%&$^d it up, probably dead tired after defending the maglia rosa for 12 days.
Sky's Chris Froome sets a new best time: 46'43. With this time he just misses the stage podium.
Marco Pinotti was one of the favourites before the stage, and he fulfills the expectations. The Italian timetrial champion is 54 seconds faster than Froome and sets an astonishing 45'49!
Jelle Vanendert probably rides the worst ITT of his career, 5'02 slower than Pinotti. 127th place in the end. Because of this result, he drops from 10 to 12 in the GC.
Peter Velits shows some great form in the last week of the Giro, finishing in 2nd place and '42 behind Pinotti.
Nicholas Roche isn't a great timetrialler, but performs pretty well: 1'42 behind Pinotti (12th place). This means a 5th place in the GC for the Irish. His best achievement in a GT so far!
Igor Antón was assured of the 4th place in the GC. He finishes the ITT in 33rd place at 2'34.
Then the top 3 in the GC. Contador gives it all to pass Rujano in the GC. He needs 1'22 to do that. His first split time is 15'14 (2nd place).
José Rujano surprises everyone at the 1st split time: 15'40 (10th place) and '16 behind Contador.
Robert Gesink has seen his teammates explode in the 2nd part, so he starts pretty slowly: 15'49 (19th time). 9 seconds behind Rujano and '35 behind Contador. No danger for his Giro-win!
Then the times at the 2nd split time:
1. Pinotti 28'24, 2nd Contador at '13, 10th Rujano at 1'02 and 19th Gesink at 1'09. This means Contador has gained '49 at Rujano, still '33 to go.
El Pistolero rides a great ITT. He even passes Antón and finishes in 2nd place, only '18 behind Pinotto.
Androni's Rujano struggles a lot in the last third of the ITT, losing another 27 seconds to Contador (11th place in the stage). But he has got 6 seconds left and takes the 2nd place in the Giro!!
Gesink rides a great last third of the stage, and he even gains '5 back at Pinotto. He finishes in 6th place at 1'13. What a historic moment for the Dutch rider, 30 years after Joop Zoetemelk won a GT, Gesink does it for the Monster Energy - Ford team!

Word from the DS: something with Chianti and Brunello, mixed with Prosecco and birra. Sorry, can't speak to you right now, feeling a little bit funny. Come back when the room has stopped spinning!

@ spilak23 & baia:
Thanks a lot! Giro review is coming later tonight, just as a small report from the Ronde van België, and a summary of May.

Review!
When the riders started in Torino for the battle for the Trofeo Senza, Robert Gesink for sure was one of the favourites. But winning it, including 2 stages and all the other jerseys, was one thing the Condor from Varsseveld surely did not dreamt of. Well, he should have! He rode strong and was eager to gain some time in the first stages. He was superior in the first week. When the mountains arrived, he already had a nice lead to Contador, Antón and Rujano, so he could defend his lead there. All 3 of the opponents tried all they'd got and as a result all the cycling fans saw an exciting Giro D'Italia.
Positive:
Of course Robert Gesink, who showed the world he's a great GT-rider. His team was stronger then expected, especially Jelle Vanendert and Rob Ruijgh did a great job.
José Rujano from Venezuela has stolen the hearts of all the cycling fans in the world. The little climber (1'62m, 48kg) from the Androni team attacked a lot, resulting in some great stage wins at the Grossglockner, Rifugio Gardeccia and Sestriere. He even surprised in the last ITT, finishing in 11th, what brought him the 2nd place in the GC, only 6 seconds before Contador. Too bad for him he missed the KOTM-jersey with 1 point.
Tyler Farrar won 3 of the 5 mass sprints, and finished on the podium on the other 2. No doubt, he was the best sprinter.
Alberto Contador? Yes, Alberto Contador. Although he started the Giro as the biggest favourite , El Pistolero finished in 3th place. But with one stage win (Macugana) and a lot of attacks, he was a positive factor in this Giro.
Negative
Ivan Basso surprisingly showed up at the start, everybody tought that Vincenzo Nibali would ride as the Liquigas-leader. In the first week, Basso absolutely didn't show why he won the Giro last year, being dropped at every little climb. But it must be told, that in the last week, he really improved himself, and eventually finished in 13th place.
I really don't know why Daniel Martin was an outsider for the podium. He lost a lot of time in the first stages, then attacked a lot, but showed that he lacked some cycling intelligence. 25th place, that's pretty bad.
Yaroslav Popovych was the GC-leader for 6 days, untill he lost the Maglia Rosa to Gesink in the stage finishing on the Etna. The Radio Shack-leader lost 50 minutes in the remaining mountain stages and finished in 19th place.
Although there were 4 Italian stage wins (Santambrogio, Marcato, Gatto & Pinotti), no Italian rider finished in the top 10 in the GC in their own country! Pinotti was best placed in 11th. Really disappointing.

While riding the Giro, 8 of our riders showed up in Belgium for the Ronde van België / Tour de Belgique. For most of them, this 5-stage race is the start of the preparation to the Tour de France.
Last year's edition was won by Stijn Devolder.
I forgot to export the startlist, but the great names participating are Fabian Cancellara, André Greipel and Philippe Gilbert.
