He's got good results for someone of his age and definitely has the potential to be a GT winner. However many riders have the potential but never do it.
He's probably a better bet than Chaves though at the moment.

I agree with Avin, I don't think I've ever seen him ride a good 3rd week.
(as long as 2016 TDF was Adam, I keep mixing them up  )

He will be 26 in two months, while 28 is too old in Chaves case...come on guys, Chaves had much GT better results when he was 26, so why write one of them off and say other one is GT winner potential? 
I see many guys 27 years old or younger with much brighter GT potential, which he had to beat to win one in next 5-6 years (Bardet, Dumoulin, Lopéz, Aru, Bernal, Soler, Carapaz, Oomen, Latour, Mas and his own brother Adam Yates, in which i see bigger GT winner potential).
Potential fighet for GT podium? Yep, but not much more in my books, but who knows, you can laught at me later when he wins one.

What do you don't understand about the phrase can win a GT but hasn't done so yet? He obviously proved that by wearing maglia for 2 weeks and annihilating the competition until the last two days. We know what happened then and how he faltered but that's stuff that he can do much better the next time around by gaining quality and experience, eg by riding more conservatively or by peaking later. It doesn't mean he will win a GT for sure but he surely is in the top badge of contenders by now who have a realistic shot at GT wins without having actually won one yet.

So i see actually like some 100-200 guys, who CAN win GT.

S. Yates can easily be in your list, I can't see him so lower beside them, and if Aru won a GT I think He can too

Simon is potential Gt rider. No worries there. This year he did peaked to early. Tour 200+ stages also did not help much. For example Sky "form arrived" just for 3 stages they needed. Magic.
Also Chaves hasn't done yet. If you read a little about cycling you should know from where he has come back after successful 2016 year. Family tragedy, crashed knee, what was close to be career killer. He is columbian with discipline (opposite to Bentacour).
P.s. Yates are british. How old was Wiggo, how old was Froome?
Also I hope that Porte will get great tour. For same reason.

Bora should focus for Bennet now on. Because Sagan fucked up badly Amgen tour. No result at all. He was GC winner at 2015 christ sake. |

And the young one, I forgot his name, that Sky apparantly will bring to Le Tour. 
I see Si Yates at a bit more versatile Purito, but Purito was better at steep stuff. I think he is better at winning stages and such than necessarily a GT, I reckon its about 50/50 if he wins one or not since he don't and never will have that marathon engine that many GT-riders have. But you don't need that in more easy GTs (the Giro was hard), take a look at the Vuelta with the short and steep stuff or the Tour which are bringing mountain stages down to 65 km, sigh. |

Speaking of potential GT winners, not declared by me but by the rider in question. Bahrain-Merida are, apparently, on the verge of signing Rohan Dennis as well as Sunweb riders Phil Bauhaus and Mike Teunissen for 2019. |

Also Jan Tratnik wow! Bahrain certainly making some big moves quite early on, and literally 4 riders with immense quality, adding to (probably) Nibali, Pozzo, Colbrelli.. It's looking a very bright 2019 and we're halfway 2018

Rigoberto is another rider confirming to ride the Tour of Slovenia adding to all of the other big names:
Majka, Formolo, Uran, Modolo, Roglic, Groenewegen, Ewan, Cavendish, Mohoric
Seems like it's becoming a bigger and better race all the time. Also a very good tune up race for the TdF. The profile is also more exciting as there are 3 potential GC deciding stages adding to the 2 sprint stages.
Eurosport is broadcasting again this year. Time to #fightforgreen
