The topic of discussion is this, outside of the big five - Contador, Nibali, Froome, Nairo and Aru - who will be the next Grand Tour champion?
nobody then, if you keep adding them to the elite group immediatly
I explained what I'd meant in reply to TMM in a previous post. I implied that these 5 will be called favourites in all GTs going ahead. Just trying to figure out the sentiment about who can get on top of the podium besides them 5.

Which team do you think he should shift to and who would be an ideal domestique to help him succeed?
I wrote it more as a hope than a belief, because I am worried that since Saxo made him a domestique, and the UCI case leading in his performance decline, his days as a GT leader are over. To the team, I would favor Etixx - as he wants family team + Specialized, and he would have GT leading possibility, which is even most probable destination imo. I don't know about domestiques, he never had any team built around him. |

Majka, Zakarin and Kreuziger. Kreuziger? Wait... WHAT?
Constant top 10 material. Maybe someday if everyone drops out ahead of him
Constant? He's finished in the top 10 in 4 of his 13 GT appearances, with the last top 10 in 2013 and the closest he's finished is 5th over 7 minutes down. I could be wrong but I'm failing to see it
Point taken. I'm still learning...

He's a very good bet to win the Vuelta this year if you ask me. TDF will be tougher given the TTs.

How is Zakarin always there? He's 26 and he has ridden 2 GTs his entire career. He withdrew from one and finished 44th in the other.
In fairness to Zakarin he was sitting in 5th and looking good in the Giro but withdrew because of a horrible crash and in last years Giro he wasn't there riding for GC, also don't just look at age as the benchmark of up and coming GT rider, look at career progression and you'll see Zakarin is on the rise going from winning the Tour d'Azerbaïdjan in 2014 to winning Romandie and a Giro stage in 2015, Paris-Nice stage and close to a final podium in the Giro in 2016. Anyway 26 is young for a GT GC contender

Yes I know who Poulidor is but I don't think it will apply to Quintana as he will win a Tour

Give him two Alpe d'Huez stages and he'd have won last year itself.

Yes and give Greipel 20 more Champs-Élysées stages and he have won last year itself.
But in the real world won Froome TDF with historical little ITT KM, give him more ITT and he wins bigger, although he obviously win no matter how little or much that is |

"My next big objective from now is mainly the Rio Olympics. We will go to the Tour in order to support Nairo Quintana. I want to make it clear, from this very moment, that I will be losing time on the first week and take things easier so I can help Nairo out and give my best in the mountains. Also, if it's possible and it doesn't compromise the team's goals, I'd like to chase some stage wins or make it into the break and help the team from there. Our motto for the Tour remains the #SueñoAmarillo, winning the Tour with Nairo at last, and then, the Rio Games."
He has all the support he needs. I can't see why he would change teams
The next champion, as in dominating GT's, the next winner of a GT or a somewhat underdog stepping up? I don't quite understand the question, but I don't think the Tour will throw any huge surprises up. I could see Porte and Barguil do very well, but neither of them as GT-dominator potential at all.
The Vuelta is a different story. Im inclined to take a long shot on Izagirre. Landa and Chaves are obvious, but I don't see anyone of them winning the Tour at any point of their career - seems to me they are Vuelta/Giro-riders.
I guess Jungels is my best best. I had a very good eye to him, GT-wise, before the Giro and even more now. Typical TDF-winners potential, but that takes at least 80 km ITT. |
