It might be ok of they take Qatar/Oman and Omloop in as well, so there's no 2 month gap.
They want to make the calendar smaller, not bigger though.

As much as the TDU is a good event it doesn't fit into the WT calendar at all. If it dropped to .HC or .1 level i think it coud still do very well as a race providing another early season option as well as being able to invite actual domestc teams to race. Losing WT status wouldn't be easy but there's no reason why it would have to make it any worse of a race, especially if Cadel keeps his event close by and popular.

I wish that I could agree, if it loses it's WT status I bet within a couple of years the event would be dead.

But if they drop TDU, all that makes it World Tour instead of Europe Tour are two Canadian classics no one gives a shit about.
In my opinion, they should expand, add San Luis, Gabon, one of those desert races, Japan Cup or some other Asian race, California or USAPCC. Add new point categories so the important races keep their status, but if they cut TDU, their globalisation policy has failed.

I don't think it's a good idea to add more crap races around the globe for the specific reason of being diverse, and end up with a bunch of Tour of Beijing situations. It's a big reason why everyone hated McQuaid.

Agree there too, to expand my opinion, I think it would be great as a .HC race AS WELL but I think adding a Middle East race, Omloop, an asian and an american (Gabon maybe) would be better, but as bbl said, make sure they are going to be successful.

Well they have to add Strade Bianche before anything else. No idea why no one has mentioned that in their expansion races. |

Two more years of sponsorship and certainty secured for the team and a rather good cause, 'nuff said.

I agree. And also, if you add California for example, all those smaller American teams couldn't compete in it anymore.
Gabon and San Luis are just not organised well enough to be WT. Japan Cup is... just not big enough by far
Strade Bianchi could be a nice option, though. Doesn't fit in everyone's "globalisation" plan but I don't really care too much about that. Riders travel enough by plane as it is, don't want to send them all around the globe 5 times in 1 season |

Strade is perfect as it is. No need to add WT points and race radios to it, it'll only dumb down that exceptional race.

That's a valid point.
Actually, abolish all WT races. Those points and race radios make for so boring races constantly

Thing is, Strade really doesn't need WT status. When you look at the list of winners, the starting lineup and the general racing, you see how much it is admired for its beauty and uniqueness and how much people want to win it. Down Under, Catalunya, Romandie or the Canadian Classics & Plouay need WT status to attract a solid field. Strade does not.

WT Status is important to get the WT teams to such a race. They are commited to race in WT races, not in normal HC races. In all it's the money that rules (as in everything else), and yes Strade is a huge race and don't need WT status.
It's already World Class in everyones mind.
Cycling got these official classes, and then the "moral" ones. Spring Classics, Monuments and so. Not easy for UCI to make it all profitable for all teams.
Amgen Tour of California (as US Pro) are big, perhaps bigger than Quebec and Montreal, but needs the US based Cont- teams. So it's hard to upgrade those to WT.
I forgot that not only money, but politics rules UCI's decisions as well
