American Pharoah won the Preakness! Its yet another year of an anxious wait to see if the triple crown can finally be experienced again. 3 more weeks! Belmont Stakes!
Isn't the jockey of this horse the same as the one that won Kentucky and Preakness last year? Not sure
Yeah, and he will be the same one going for the triple crown

Mates don't forget the Melbourne Cup !!
First tuesday in November....
3pm Down Under and I think I saw that Eurosport will broadcast it live, even in Europe.
All in the spirit of keeping the thread alive. It's not all Triple Crown racing in US, but this Melbourne Cup is HUGE. Started sometime in over 150 years ago.

Yep top horse very much the best horse since Frankel and best in America from a very long time favourite race he ran was the one he lost to get taken on like that by a horse like frosted and nearly winning still is an amazing effort I think he overtook Golden Horn as world champion as he reached 139 in the classic rating Golden Horn is on 137
With regards to the Melbourne Cup in the uk it's on both our racing channels
And I think another European Winner Max Dynamite is very unexposed on the flat and nearly won a big field hurdle despite jumping poor 2 starts ago so he 100 per cent stays and he won over 1 mile so has the speed , Bondi Beach the 2nd choice
And quest for more is a stupid price considering he beat trip to Paris and max dynamite already this year |

I'm going to be there today, I'm in Melbourne for the entire Spring carnival. In a nice marquee getting served free food and drinks all day - might almost forget about the racing
Max Dynamite does look good, but my personal favourite has always been Red Cadeaux and can't look past it pr Trip to Paris.

Horrible "sport" thought as a society we would of moved past animal cruelty as entertainment by now

Not quite sure where I sit on the "cruelty vs. entertainment" debate, but it's a huge day in Australian sport (even a public holiday here in Melbourne). Would be fantastic for Red Cadeaux to win after three second places, but I'm going with Criterion today.

It's entertaining but two horse deaths last year being shrugged off as worth it is not okay.
EDIT: Sorry for confusion meant at the Melbourne Cup

136 deaths on Australian racetracks last year which doesn't include stats of deaths on training tracks, paddock deaths and other deaths related to the racing industry including harness racing. I don't understand why we race horses as young as 2/3 years old, they are still developing and the stresses being put through their fragile bodies is massive, we have breed these horses to be massive majestic balls of muscle on very fragile legs which is very sad to see. I can accept horse racing if things changed but it's hard to see that happening considering the astronomical amounts of money that is gambled on it (that's a burden of all sports). I didn't always hold this view on the "sport" but as I've gotten older and been educated my views have changed, it's unfair what we do to horses for the sake of entertainment

Well this is sad, a horse mentioned by a couple of posters here in 11 year old Red Cadeaux broke down in today's Melbourne Cup, hopefully the poor horse can be saved and being a horse well liked I'm sure they will try and save it but it's unfortunate to think most that break down like that don't get the same treatment.

So true, as much as we all hope that Red Cadeaux is going to be ok it's shocking that this level of care isn't shown to the many other horses that pick up serious injuries.
On a more positive note, Prince of Penzance wins ahead of Max Dynamite and Criterion. Michelle Payne becomes the first female jockey to win a Melbourne Cup in only her second attempt. No doubt a fairytale finish for all involved with a first time winning trainer as well and at odds of 100-1. Mostly though, a real breakthrough for women jockeys who will now surely get the respect and opportunities they deserve.

It's because Cadeaux's injury isn't life threatening like lost tend to be, it should be fine.
My grandfather managed to pull in nearly thirty grand on the winner, no idea what possessed him to even consider it as it was at such long odds.

I agree with you guys that sometimes horse racing can be a cruel sport and it's truly sad on the horses.
Take the Grand National in England. That is just terrible. Seen it a couple of times on TV, but then I said No more.
I took a liking to the sport when my family moved to US in 1973
(yeah that-s how old I am )
That year Secretariat won the Triple Crown and everyone was following the races. Secretariat was truly one of the Greatest.
However 2-3 years later the shock in watching another great matchup the filly Ruffian broke down and had to be euthanized. A whole nation cried.
So I agree, too many sad moments darkens to good moments. However the Melbourne Cup is as big as they come and seing this year a Jockey Sheila winning for the first time makes you try and look on it on the good side. The whole festivity around the Cup is also something to experience and it's not strange the call the race "The race that stops a nation"
Lets hope everything ends well with that lovely Red Cadeaux. I had hoped he would have won after several runner-ups. Then it ends like this.
Fingers crossed.

Did anybody catch Justify winning the triple crown this weekend?
I tried my hand at real horse betting for the first time putting $20 on the 1-2 finish. I got Justify right at #1 but the horse I picked to get 2nd got 4th. Would have taken home almost $170 if I got it right

Actually run a horse racing tips site on the side, Justify was very impressive the horse that was 2nd though ran in England to start this season and was just above average so not sure what the form of that race was worth. He will probably take a world of beating in the BC Classic, and I think he has been sold to stud for 60 million so he probably doesn't have much longer left to race |
