I arrived at the National Centre nice and early for the day that would ultimately decide my future. The Centre was only 7km from my flat, so I decided to arrive on my bike.
We were then seated for the briefing on the day, learnt a little more about how the Programme would work over the course of the year, if we were accepted and what the future would hold 'beyond the programme'.
The morning was orientated around the track, and I knew that it would be my weakness. The afternoon would see the group split up into their disciplines; Climbers, Time Trialist and Sprinters, and we would head into the Ribble Valley for further scrutiny.
After a countless number of tests on the rollers, hooked up to countless different machines, we were let loose on the boards.
I knew I would struggle, given my preference towards the hills and climbs, but I gave it my all. My power outage looked good, but my 11.824secs time in the 200m Time Trial was the slowest. I couldn't believe how nervous I was heading into the afternoon.
Ah, now this is where I am at home. Open roads, in a small group, with the route pointing skywards. It had hoped that we would have been joined by the Yates Brothers, Adam and Simon, but we were told that they were already accepted after riding on the Programme last year. The same was said about Owain Doull, who was meant to be part of the Sprinter's group.
After my disappointing time on the track in the morning, I went all out on the climbs. I set the pace on the front, and made sure I was seen by the coaches who drove in front watching every movement we made.
Attacking on the final circuit of the day, I knew that I had given all I could do. My future with the Development Team rested on this day, and in my own mind I felt like my entire future in cycling depending on my acceptance.

A few days after the Trial with the Great Britain Team, I received the call to come in and sit down with Shane Sutton and Dave Brailsford. This could only mean two things; I was about to told some good news or some bad news. Either way, the butterflies in my stomach were doing somersaults.
Thankfully, Dave and Shane got down to business straightaway. My perform on the Trail Day was more than what they were looking for, and I was offered a place on the Great Britain Development Team. However, there was a small issue...
Throughout my entire life, I have always seen myself as South African. It is where I was born and lived the first 11 years of my life. South Africa has been close to my heart, and something I am very proud of. Yes, I hold a Dual Nationality Passport, but I would never proclaim to be British. Even on my British Cycling Race Licence, it shows my Nationality as ZA.
However, in order to ride for the Development Team, I was told I would have be British in the eyes of the UCI, potentially giving up my South African Citizenship, and I was faced with a decision that could ultimately decide my future career in the Professional Peleton.
Dave and Shane knew that this was a big decision for me to make, and gladly let me have time to think about my answer. I know what I needed to do first; I needed to go home and talk this over with my parents.

@Martial: There will be no 'Marginal Gains' in this story
@Admir: It is going to be a tough decision. Will head overrule heart, or will heart be the stronger? And thanks a lot I will do my best to keep it up
@fernando: Thanks I am wondering whether to reveal what happens next now, or wait til tomorrow... decisions, decisions

If you want to progress in the World of cycling then you will have to pick Great Britain over South Africa i'm afraid, just hope your parents see it that way |
