Nah, then the world would finish on 01/01/01 (assuming that you're making that our current Dec 21st?). Somehow some people discovered that the long count calendar starts on August 11th 3114 BC. The belief is that when the Mayan calendar reached it's 13th B'ak'tun, which corresponds to 144.000 days, there'd be a new creation, or the end of the world, or something like that, because that was the day that the last creation ended (according to the Mayas we're living in the 4th creation). And that day happens to be Dec 21st 2012. So it's not about the date (Dec 21st), it's about how many days have passed on the long count calendar.

If we are living in the 4th creation, there must have been 3 creations before. Apparently the world did not end at the end of either of these previous creations, so what exactly speaks against a fifth creation?

I find it quite funny that there are people all over the world currently investing in Fallout shelters (They're not particularly cheap, either.) due to the fear of the 21st of this month. Imagine when they emerge on the 22nd to find nothing has changed.
