Peter Sagan: The Quest For History
Mresuperstar
Giro d'Italia - Stage 3

Race Review

It is still early but Peter Sagan needs to pick up his game pretty soon
or else he will have a huge whole to dig out of once the mountains hit.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%203/1.jpg

No chance for the sprinters at the checkpoint today,
as a breakaway of 6 take all the points today.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%203/2.jpg

But they weren't going to spoil the finish as FDJ, Garmin, GreenEdge
do all the work to bring it all back with 8kms to go.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%203/3.jpg

Two major trains control the front with Garmin on the left and FDJ on the right. Sagan goes with the scouting reports and quickly takes Farrar wheel, but on the other side of the road the wearing the red points jersey on loan Francisco Ventoso goes with his gut and takes Hutarovich wheel.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%203/4.jpg

Then all of a sudden a third train rips up the far leftside of the road powered by GreenEdge carring their man Goss to the front, on his wheel is Gerald Ciolek.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%203/5.jpg

Goss gets a perfect leadout and Ventoso sees it. This quickly leads to him jumping off the FDJ train to catch Goss. And now behind riders without a train mixing into the action. Despite the movement around Farrar keeps to his leadout and kicks with 600 meters to go, Sagan tries to hold on for the ride.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%203/6.jpg

But it wasn't enough as Goss had a picture perfect sprint to the line. Ventoso with a nice scramble to take 2nd and take full ownership of the red points jersey. 3rd to Tyler Farrar, and 4th Danilo Napolitano who did everything by himself today without the help of a leadout. Peter Sagan grabs a top 5 but surely needs to do better as he sits 20 points behind Ventoso for the red jersey.

5th place today for Peter, he's getting closer Wink

Peter will get some wins as his form improves, so no need to worry right now.Wink

Race Review

This flat stage is a little bit different with a small hilly coming with 20kms to go. Many suggest that it won't play that much of a difference
but we shall wait and see.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/1-1.jpg

To make things even more interesting rain is expected to fall throughout the entire day creating wet roads and wet riders.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/2.jpg

The sprint point will go unnoticed as the breakaway takes all the points.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/3.jpg

And the climb doesn't do much either as the peloton stays intact.
The breakaway hovers around a minute.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/4.jpg

Maarten Wynants gives a valiant effort but
today was always going to be a bunch sprint finish.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/5.jpg

The trains line up with GreenEdge on the left and Garmin on the right.
Sagan follows Goss instead of Farrar today. But more importantly is on the back of wheel of Francisco Ventoso, who he needs to keep close.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/6.jpg

And it looks like the right decision to take the GreenEdge train
as Garmin implodes on the right for no reason,
Farrar is quickly falling out of the points race.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/7.jpg

Goss makes a mess out of his leadout and allows Sacha Modolo, Francisco Ventoso, and Peter Sagan to fly by through the middle.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/8.jpg

Ventoso makes his move around Modolo with 400 meters to go.
Sagan is trying his best to keep on Ventoso's wheel.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/9.jpg

What a finish, Ventoso with a final burst of speed beats Modolo on the line.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/10.jpg

Sagan gets his best finish so far with a 3rd after a very tight battle.
So he will give in another 9 points to Ventoso
but should get some back with a tough hilly stage tomorrow.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%205/11.jpg

The sprint was so fast that a huge gap opened at the back of the peloton,
the biggest name losing time is Italian favourite Cunego.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 6

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/Profile.jpg

Race Review

Points are up for grabs as Sagan should be the only sprinter
to get over the climbs. But just how many points can he get back?

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/1.jpg

It's a small 6 man breakaway that gets clear today.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/2.jpg

Liquigas does some of the pace making as the peloton splits and
reconnects throughout the stage. Sagan is well placed at the front.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/3.jpg

The breakaway is held right around 5 minutes as they reach the first KoM.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/4.jpg

Liquigas are putting the pressure on early by sending
GC rider Nibali on the attack up the second KoM climb.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/5.jpg

Nibali catches the breakaway at the top,
the peloton doesn't seem worried as there is still half the stage to go.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/6.jpg

And Nibali evens leads them over the next climb a few kilometers later.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/7.jpg

The peloton is struggling to organize as it is down to 25 riders.
All the sprinters, expect for Sagan, have been dropped.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/8.jpg

Nibali rides away from the breakaway and at the sprint point has a huge lead! The remaining breakaway riders take the rest of the sprint points,
so Sagan will have to wait for the finish.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/9.jpg

7 minutes is Nibali's lead over the peloton at the last KoM!
He could be pulling on pink!

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/10.jpg

But the peloton does pick up the pace as they catch the orginal breakaway and it catches Sagan off guard. He gets dropped in 17th position, sprint points are only awarded for top 15 so Sagan has some work to do.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/11.jpg

Damiano Cunego and Thomas De Gendt
make their move with 25kms to go.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/12.jpg

But the chasers bring them back with 16kms to go.
Will they slow down to allow Sagan back on? Nibali is still 4'25" up the road.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/13.jpg

Sagan finds himself in the 2nd chase group
which best position would be 14th.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/14.jpg

Liquigas might be disappointed in Sagan's effort but it's cheers all around for Nibali, an outstanding solo victory! Will he get the Pink jersey as well?

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/15.jpg

He will! Damiano Cunego leads Giovanni Visconti, Rigoberto Uran,
and Thomas De Gendt to the line 2'06" after Nibali.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/16.jpg

The group Sagan missed out on takes the next 8 spots,
meaning Sagan will be sprinting for 14th and just 2 points.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%206/17.jpg

And he does get 14th by winning the sprint easily.
One can only wonder what would have happened if
he didn't get dropped from the first chase group.

Rapid Recap

Stage 7:

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage7-Profile.jpg

The mountains aren't usually the place to pick up sprint points if you're a sprinter and stage 7 proved that. Sagan tried his best to track down the breakaway before the sprint point but it was no use. In the end Peter was just out of luck. The finally climb saw Cunego ride away while it was a scramble behind not to lose time. Nibali stays close enough to keep Pink.

Stage 8:

Stage 8 saw a new tactic after sitting back on stage 7 didn't work. Peter Sagan jumped into the morning breakaway of 6 riders. And with Nibali in Pink Sagan had no right to help in the breakaway. And the breakaway did survive to the sprint point were Sagan rightfully picked up the 8 points. However Lampre did the pace making and brought back the breakaway before Sagan could contest for the finish. The climb to the finish saw another dominating performance from Cunego. This time even more convincing as he nearly beats his competitors by a minute. Nibali has a bad day and can't keep up with the first chase group and has to hand off the overall lead to Sky young rider Rigoberto Uran.

Race Review

So with Sagan picking up points yesterday,
but also putting further more energy then the other sprinters.
It will be interesting to see how that will effect him today.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%209/1.jpg

It's a wet rainy day as a morning breakaway of 4 gets away.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%209/2.jpg

They lead us through the sprint point so the sprint behind
in the peloton will only give out 2 points to the winner.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%209/3.jpg

Tyler Farrar is starting to find his sprinting legs as he beats Sagan and Petacchi for the 2 points. No sign of the points leader Ventoso during the sprint.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%209/4.jpg

Sagan tells the team he is feeling pretty good
so Liquigas takes control of the front.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%209/5.jpg

And the team does there job
and brings the breakaway back in time for the sprint.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%209/6.jpg

With no leadout trains Ventoso makes the first move.
Sagan is alert and takes his wheel.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%209/7.jpg

Ventoso runs out of gas with 700 meters to go
and takes a few seconds for Sagan to realize it.
His delayed decision to go around Ventoso
allows the others sprinters right back in the action.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%209/8.jpg

Tyler Farrar takes advantage as Sagan tried his best to recover
but has to settle for 2nd. His best finish so far but that isn't the best news. Ventoso slipped all the way back to 10th. Which moves the Terminator into 2nd in the points competition just 5 points behind Ventoso.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 10

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2010/Profile.jpg

Race Review

It's a tough hilly stage as the bookmakers have even left
Sagan off the odds sheets with a hard up kick at the finish.
So it remains a mystery on how Sagan will handle this stage.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2010/1.jpg

Peter Sagan surprises many by jumping into the morning breakaway.
And it is quite a strong break with Steve Chainel, Fabian Wegmann,
and Mauro Santambrogio joining him.

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2010/2.jpg

Struggling to come across to them is Ruggero Marzoli.
It is clear they have allowed Sagan and the rest of the breakaway to go free.
Will it turn out to be a huge mistake by the other teams?

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2010/3.jpg

The breakaway doesn't even bother getting Sagan angry
and they just let Peter have the 8 points at the sprint point.
But that isn't causing the biggest buzz on the race radio,
it is their time gap of 11 minutes!

i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc374/mresuperstar4/Peter%20Sagan%20QFH/Giro/Stage%2010/4.jpg

Sagan sits back through the only categorized climb today
because he has a bigger picture in his mind, the stage win.
They still hold a 10 minute lead with 40kms to go!

It's a rough day for Marzoli as he never caught a glimpse of the morning attackers he was chasing and in the end is brought back with 25kms to go.
But the peloton isn't done yet as the 4 leaders are still at 10 minutes!
It will take a miracle to catch them now.

As the breakaway hits the climb they start attack each other as they know now that one of them will win the stage. Mauro Santambrogio opens the biggest gap at 35 seconds but Sagan and Fabian Wegmann
put him back into his place with 3kms to go.

The sprint opens up and Santambrogio is drained from his earlier attack to pose a threat so Sagan and Wegmann duel it out for the stage!

And Peter Sagan strikes! His 1st stage win of hopefully many on his Quest For History. And a rather basic celebration for The Terminator today.

The peloton sees a few attacks up the climb but when it came down to it,
with a kilometer to go, everyone was in one big group
as Nibali lead them to the line.

Cunego wins the sprint for 5th, with the other climbers right on his tail.

A photo for the scrapbook!

Awesome win and now you're leading, great! Sprinters never get those jerseys in the Giro and Vuelta when I play, so very well done.

What a stage win, and the points should be easy to get now!
