Another official statement from Cyanide (Eyolfur, more specifically) https://www.cyanide-studio.com/forumPC...mp;t=13266:
---
We found that the variants system had quite a lot of problems in the release of the game. Unfortunately we did not pay enough attention to that side of the game, and it will not be fixed in the Patch #4. Here are the two main bugs we found (you might have already mentioned it before) :
-Mod/Stages folder does NOT work. You are supposed to paste your stages in MyDocuments/Mod folder, but it doesnt work during a 3D race loading. There is a problem in the code preventing it to work.
As a temporary workaround, you may put your variant stages in CM_stages, but when everything will be fixed, you'll have to use Mod/Stages folder.
-Classics variants are not activated in classic mode. The first variant is always taken, no matter the one you choose. In career mode, the variant seem to work fine.
The fixes on the variant system are supposed to be delivered with the 2nd part of July patch.

It mixes creating stages with putting it in folders with renaming them. Rather than just telling us what to do after downloading a stage.
Maybe someone could umb it down with examples ? |

If the text makes you understand the process, it's much easier than needing to follow a different step guide for each possible process What stage are you trying to add? Replace a fake one, add a completely new one (new race), add a variant.. ?

As I have now downloaded the PCMdaily expansion pack, how do I make the variants included in that pack playable in the single stage race mode.
thanks

They already are. Just click single race mode. Then go to the race. TdF for example.
Above you will see some choices now. 2012, variant_emmea etc. |

can anybody confirm my line of thinking here with regards to a career game ?
1) I downloaded a couple variants that end in "2013", does that mean they will only come in 2013 ?
2) If so, what do i have to do to make them available for the game every year ? Just change the ending of all the files into "v1" ?
3) Does it matter if a make it v1 or v2 ?
4) assuming i have "v1", "v2" and "v3" , does that mean that in any given year each of the 3 can be chosen by the game ? |

1) It means they'll surely come in 2013, and certainly not in 2014. But in all other years (that have no variant specified by the suffix), the game will go random between all variants available (and will never pick the same one in 2 consecutive years - unless it picks the 2015 variant randomly and its suffix is 2016, in which case it'll happen 2 consecutive years).
2) Answered above.
3) No, anything can go in the suffix. If a year, it'll guarantee the variant will appear in that year.
4) Actually only 2 of them 3 (assuming that one of them has been picked the last year).

I have a follow up question :
Could you theorethically choose stages from the CM/stages folder (and from downloaded stages) and rename them so that they are a new variant of an existing stage race ?
For example take a stage from the dauphinee, 1 from the Giro , 1 from the tour of utah (etc, etc) and build a new tour of california that way ?
dauphinee stage --> t0_california_01_2013 ( for the .cds and .zces files both of course)
tour stage --> t0_california_02_2013
and so on ?
Of course for your own realism |

not what i asked, but i suppose the principle stays the same ? (don´t want to create a new race, want to make a variant for an existing race out of stages from other races)
IF that works the way i described/asked about i´d think that would be infinitely easier than editing around in the DB, no ?

Yes, it's the same, you just skip the adding to the DB part and go directly to the "using stages from other races to make your own race (in this case variant)" part

You could also download a DB which includes variants, such as the PCMDaily DB.
