Stage 5 Pisa - Piombino
I apologize I skipped to quickly to the results and could not take any screenshots for this stage ! Luckily it was only a sprint stage, shouldn't happen again ...
I captured the results however:
As you can see Oscar Freire was able to take down a uneventful stage, all the GC contedners finished at the same time, no changes.
Because of the mishap I also bring you Stage 6 of the Giro !
Stage 6 Portoferraio - Portoferraio
T-Mobile Stage Plan
It's a really hilly and challenging route today as the route takes us around the island where of Portoferraio lies on, it's a beautiful place. Many of these hilly stages favour Paolo and so once again we are looking to gain time before the 8 big mountain stages. We will try and defend the pink jersey and put some pressure on the last two downhills of the stage.
The Stage
Marzoli, Zabriskie and Vannoti formed the break today but alas it was a futile attempt, they could not keep up with the action as things kicked up with 60km remaining.
Frank Vandenbroucke, Oscar Camezind (former WC) and Igor Astarloa (current WC) attacked on the cima del monte ! The warning alarms come on for T-Mobile as VDB is in 7th place on the GC, so it was a very dangerous move. All of them are fantasic classic riders (80+ hills) ...
Camenzind catching up ...
We reacted by placing one of our own classics specailists on the front, Kessler, to keep the gap from going out too far. They still had a good 2 minute gap by the top of the Poggio however and things in the peleton was splitting up !
Bartoli had put the hammer down for Basso. Cunego, Di Luca, Rebellin, Bettini, Garzelli and Kessler could match the pace, but where was Savoldelli !
He'd been distanced on the climb, Nardello and Sella were with him so we wasn't on his own but he was going to have to descend well to catch the front group before the final climb.
I'm pleased to say he made it ! Di Luca, Bettini and Rebellin attacked from the group and Paolo feeling better followed them.
They caught VDB, Camenzind and Astarloa at the top ... 7 riders now to fight it out. Bettini attacks on the descent, only Camenzind can match him ...
Has Savoldelli recovered from his previous efforts ? He increases the pace.
Il Falco drops like a stone passing Bettini and Camenzind to steal his first stage victory of the 2004 Giro d'Italia !
The reduced bunch finishes 37" behind.

Stage 7 Grosseto - Monte Cetona
T-Mobile Stage Plan
A tough hilly stage that finishes at the town of Cetona, this will be for the classics riders and not the climbers. We don't aim to do much today, maybe help out with a bit of work. Ideally though we'll just wait for the last climb and follow the dangers.
The Stage
Zabriskie, Marzoli and Vannoti formed the breakaway today. Zabriskie is high up in the mountains classement so is looking to take that over from Van Petegem, he had lots of support too ...
Saeco were pushing a very fast pace up the big climb of the day, Monte Amiata, reducing the peleton to about 90 riders. CSC as always were doing a ton of work so we joined in to on the Salita di Montieri as it begun to really strech out going over the top ...
The Peleton hit the climb up to Cetona as one big group however (having caught the break), though slightly more tired. Davide Rebellin launched the first move, closely marked by Paolo of course !
Shortly afterwards attacks came from Bettini, Di Luca, Cunego, Basso, Boogerd. Cunego flying in white ...
Rebellin had now broken clear from the Maglia Rosa with only 3km remaining to the summit. Savoldelli had also been passed by Bettini and Di Luca who are probably the only ones strong enough to catch Rebellin right now. Savoldelli has to hang on to Basso and Cunego. Here is the situation:
Boogerd, Scarponi and Casagrande were not that far behind either ...
No one could catch Davide Rebellin though and he takes a stage win at Cetona !
What a season it's been for him as only this year he became the first rider ever to do the ardennes triple !
Bettini finishes 20 seconds behind and Di Luca a further 10 seconds behind. Savoldelli bests his companions Basso and Cunego to take 4th ...

Thanks guys !
Stage 8 Arezzo - Misano Adriatico
T-Mobile Stage Plan
Recovery stage ! Well I mean sprint stage, should be an easy day for us. Still notice how a 'easy' Giro stage is 232 km and still contains a bunch of climbs. We hope the pace is slow today as Savoldelli is only on 'Very Good' and everyone else is even worse !
The Stage
The usual teams formed the break again today with Mason, Girodani, Mazzanti, Zberg, Gutierrez Cataluna, Mori and White. Big teams like Saeco and CSC are always saving their riders for later on in the Giro, clever.
As has happened on all the previous sprint stages Fassa Bortolo stepped up to take on the challenge of bringing the break back ...
Sure enough with 15km remaining the break had been neutralized and so it would come down to a drage race. Unfortunatly for us at 10km to go Serguei Ivanov crashed in some weird accident as he was the only noe to go down, he got up but really struggled to the end. Could be a problem for future stages ...
Up front the srpint had begun with Pettachi leading the charge !
It was not to be once again for him as Freire stole the show with a fast acceleration !
The former world champion seems on fine form this Giro ...
Bonus Picture !

Firstly sorry for not updating in a while I've had some serious issues which have taken up my time since, however the story will still go on so I bring you the next stage.
Stage 9 Rimini - Forlì
T-Mobile Stage Plan
Transitional stage today before the big mountains, I don't expect anyone to try anything, either a day for the likes of Friere or the break. So we'll just try and treat this as another recovery stage so we're fully prepared for the mountains.
The Stage
Many of the riders new today was a great oppotunity for a stage win so the break was pretty packed ...
It contained Lunghi, Sinkewitz, Garate, Gil, Zulle, Montgomery, Vannoti, Dominguez, Horrach, Bertagnoli, Faresin & Sgambelluri. They had broken away on the big climb of the day the Fumaiolo ... and it seemed no one was prepared to chase.
Due to the rain there was a few crashes including Garzelli.
He was not injured however and made it back fairly easily as the advantage for the break grew to over 10 minutes. As the stage progressed it kept going up and up as all the favourites wanted to take it easy before the next stages. Having noticed many of these favourites lounging at the back we attempted to split the group ...
Our little plan didn't work though and it was just a wasted effort by Nardello. The break was now comming to 10km to go with over 20 minutes ! None of them could challenge for the jersey however. Horrach made a brave attack ...
But he was not the strongest today ! He was caught and passed by none other than Alex Zulle. Zulle making it look easy ...
Millar led the peleton home approximately 20 minutes behind the winner today. While the pink jersey was safe, some of the break crept into the top 10 on GC.

Stage 10 Imola - Monte Abetone
T-Mobile Stage Plan
Here we go then, the first big mountain stage of the 2004 Giro ! It's going to be a tough one at 210km not to mention the Monte Cimone is unpaved, it's followed by a technical descent then the finish up the Abetone. We're just going to let the other teams dictate today, CSC and Saeco should be happy to do so. Giuseppe Guerini and Santiago Botero will hopefully be with Savoldelli over the Cimone as our 2 climbers.
The Stage
The brave souls who formed the break today were Lanfranchi(74), Codol(77), Karpets(79), Zberg(74) & Pena(72). (Mountains skill). The closest in the GC was Karpets at 27".
They quickly got 10-11 minutes as the peleton idled along. So on the Passo del Radici a few more climbers attacked ! Moncoutie(78), Dufaux(78) and Belli(78).
I guess the teams of favourites were looking for T-Mobile to work as they didn't want to either. Our standoff allowed the initail break to accumulate 20 minutes ! The trio of Belli,Moncoutie&Dufaux were slowly closing in on them though.
Now on the thin, unpaved roads of the Monte Cimone, Michael Rasumussen was the first big name to break the ceasefire.
Finally Saeco and CSC reacted holding the gap at about 40 seconds as the peleton rapidly diminished. Then the monster attacked !
This got a response from nearly all the big names including Cunego, Heras, Mancebo, Piepoli, Simoni and Garzelli. Paolo was not amongst them, he was not on super form and we knew we had the descent comming up so we waitied. A risky game.
Cresting the summit the group of Basso had 1"10 on the Savoldelli group. Guerini was still him. Time to go !
Paolo dragges the small peleton back to most of the attacks except for Basso and Garzelli who still had a small advantage.
Up ahead Codol had broken away from his companions but Dufaux and Belli were catching fast. This is what the chasing group behind Basso & Garzelli looked like ... (being led by Simoni and Cunego)
Climbers like Honchar(81), Periero(80), Cioni(81), Sella(79), Sevilla(79), Nozal(80) were in trouble and in a group just behind.
Due to the incredibly fast pace Basso and Garzelli were caught, Paolo is thankful for Saeco ! It was not without more victims ... Pellizotti(80), Osa(79) and Azevedo(81) were now in trouble ...
Savoldelli could follow no longer as Cunego rode away and everyone split up into 1's and 2's. Basso waited a long time, he seemed to be marking us but eventually he didn't want to let Cunego get to far ahead.
Up ahead Massimo Codol held of a charging Dufaux by just 25 seconds !
Meanwhile Savoldelli was trying to limit his losses ! He only conceded just under a minute to Cunego.
While we lost some time to a few rivals, we also gained some time on the likes of Mancebo, Heras, Piepoli and more !

Stage 11 Venezia - Monte Zoncolan
T-Mobile Stage Plan
Zoncolan ! We're very thankful the run up to the Zoncolan is fairly mundane with just the short climb up to Orton, slightly scared of the pure climbers here. Also no oppotunity to gain back time on a descent so this will probably not be our best stage, we have other options later on in the Giro so it shouldn't be a problem. We'll try and use Guerini to reel in any early attacks and see how it goes from there !
The Stage
Huge break today ... seems everyone wants to win on this prestigious stage.
Leipheimer(78), Paolini(61), Ferrara(73), Zampieri(75), Gonzalez de Galdeano(77), Noccentini(73), Merckx(71), Perez Cuapio(78), Trentin(75) Gentili(74), Rincon Quintana(77), Jekker(78), Giordani(72), Garate(77)
As with the previous stage no one in the peleton wanted to take up the chase, I can only presume the other teams were looking at us to control the break but we refused ! Since none of the riders in the break were of super danger we had no reason to ride. As such the break built up a massive 20 minute advantage ... infact probably good news for us as this neutralises time bonuses at the end of the stage.
Completely out of the blue however, in the valley after Orton with still 9km before the base of the Zoncolan Ivan Basso, attacks ! He does not wait for mountains ...
Some contenders try to follow but decide against the pace being set by Basso and drop back to a now full-speed peleton driven by T-Mobile and Saeco. At the head of affairs Gonzalez de Galdeano attacks with Leipheimer and they ride away from thier companions.
Basso takes the first turn onto the Zoncolan, he now holds a full minute over the peleton.
Despite a strong pace by the mgalia rosa group he edges his lead out a further 20 seconds over the first section of the climb. The group of mortals chasing the machine ...
Roberto Heras now on his terrain makes a solid move in an attempt to catch Ivan.
Daminao Cunego, never one to miss out on an attack this Giro, seizes the oppotunity too.
Gonzalez de Galdeano and Leiphimer are now at the tunnels at the top of the climb (of which there are 2) and have 40 seconds over a bunch of chasers.
Then incredibly Juan Manuel Garate jumps across in the space of 500m setting the final up for a sprint ! And the winner is ...
Yes that's right a photo finish on the Monte Zoncolan, after a few minutes of convergence the commisars deemed the stage winner to be Garate. What a ride !
Basso now passes the 1km banner, you can see Savoldelli comming through the tunnels along with a select group of climbers. The gap is still going out and the pink jersey is in danger !
Bonus shot of Basso, monster climber.
It's going to be so very close, Savoldelli senses it and has the strength to follow Gilberto Simoni as he accellerates towards the line !
... the gap at the start of the day between Basso and Savoldelli was 2"06 ... and Paolo crosses the line down 2"28 ! We lose the jersey Big dissapointment as Paolo climbed great today.

Out of pink then, looking optomistically though I think a podium place is very realistic and should be achievable. Basso looks imovable but you never know, a good attack by a contender without a concerted chase could put him in trouble. He only has 2 mountain domestiques Jackshe(78) and Luttennburger(77) who have already done a ton of work this Giro so his team isn't the best. For reference our mountain goats are Guerini(79) and Botero(77) and then Aerts(73). |
