Two more stages to go, with the last one being only 100 km long and probably not very spectacular. This could be different today, where we will take the route from El Vandrell to Barcelona, where we will finish on one of this nasty hills after a local round. But since the stage is quite flat we can take it easy and enjoy this nice spring day a bit.
Kreuziger is currently leader in the GC, but he has the same time as Sagan. Both of them must be in good shape after what they showed the last days, and it will promise a fast finish.
I - on the other side - struggled recently towards the finish, and have to take care to keep up with the front. There are still about 30 riders who could make it in the top-10 without winning with a large margin. And a Top-10 for me would sure be nice to take home..
In the meantime a breakaway of 11 formed and established an 8-minutes lead before Rabobank increased the pace in the peloton.
Rabobank? They were probably hoping for a nice finish by Barredo. With only 23 seconds back in the GC, he could even go for the overall lead.
The breakaway (containing Kump from our team) broke apart and got reeled in about 10 km from the finish, after we took the final hill for the first time. When we came back to finish the race with the final climb of about 2.5 km, Valls came to set me out of the wind and to the front of the group. For a short time we were even in the first row, but there was still a long way to go.
We were passed by Kreuziger, who was followed by Barredo, Sagan a few places behind. Barredo quickly overtook Kreuziger and went ahead, unbeatable, and took the stage win. Kreuziger was overtaken by Albasini, and next was Sagan. But Kreuziger was safe before Sagan fully reached him, and gained four valuable seconds by taking 3rd place.
There were small gaps between all riders in front, but the organisation decided to give the same time to a group of six riders, and +18" to the remaining pack. Me included, unfortunately.
I lost two places in the GC, now standing 8th. As said before, Kreuziger has now a 4-seconds lead to Sagan, but there is a pure sprint finish tomorrow, which could work in favour of Sagan.
Barredo took a nice victory and rewarded his team mates for their hard work, and I, once again, had a great supporter in Rafael Valls. He took a nice top-10 (as 10th) today, while I finished 11th.

nice to see the weather change over timeEdited by manindemaan on 09-04-2011 02:17
The final stage will bring us, not far from Barcelona, over 109 km from Sant Cugat del Valles to Montmelo. Kreuziger leads over Sagan with 4 seconds, and we expect Kreuziger's Astana Team to let a break go away, while Sagan, if he thinks he can win from the pure sprinters, could try to finish in a mass sprint.
In the beginning it looked like a break could make it, when 7 riders got away and quickly had an advantage of four minutes.
But in the back several teams were not too happy with the breakaway, and Quick-Step, RadioShack, Movistar, Vacansoleil, and Liquigas sent some people to the front to set a higher pace. They catched the breakaway, and with less than 2 km from the finish even caused a split of the peloton, with 70 cyclists falling behind.
The sprint opened with Vaitkus (Astana), Bozic (Vacansoleil) and Dumoulin (Cofidis). In second line, Hondo, Perez and our Florencio tried to stay in touch.
Bozic was fastest and took the stage win in front of Vaitkus and Dumoulin. Florencio took a nice 5th place, just behind Perez. The two large groups united again on time, and all got the same time.
With neither Kreuziger nor Sagan gaining bonus seconds on this stage, Kreuziger wins 2011's Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, just 4 seconds ahead of Sagan. Linus Gerdemann (Leopard) finished 3rd, and I took the 8th place overall.
A few days later we received the news that we will take part in the Giro d'Italia. The team will be announced in a couple of days. Our managers invited me to talk about my near future, especially whether or not I will participate in the Giro.
We agreed that I won't take part in the Giro. I was confident with this decision, especially since this would mean I can prepare for the Tour in my own rhythm. This also means I can relax for a couple of weeks, in which I will head back home to Russia, and meet a young talent our scout spotted.
The team participated in the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco, where Fabio Falline got us a stage win on the second day. Marko Kump won at Klasika Primavera, and Carlos Sastre finished 2nd in Vuelta a Castilla y Leon, about 2 minutes behind Samuel Sanchez. A few more preparatory races later the team was ready to head to Turin, Italy, where the Giro will start. We will take part with the following riders:
Carlos Sastre (36)
Carlos will try to fight for rank 3, behind the - on paper - unbeatable duo Basso and Nibali.
Fabio Duarte (24)
Fabio will be the alternative in case Sastre has to give up, and final helper if necessary.
David Blanco (36) and Giampaolo Cheula (32)
They will support the leader when the pack's size gets reduced
Matthias Braendle (21) and Dimitry Kozontchuk (27)
Both are here to keep our leaders out of the wind
Marco Corti (25) and Daniele Colli
Not able to follow in high mountains, they can get water and put their luck on proof in a sprint.
David Gutierrez Gutierrez (24)
He's here to go for an early break win.
In the first week, characterized by short mountain and long hilly stages, Danielo di Luca (Katusha) dominated the GC, but he was soon to be replaced by Michele Scarponi (Lampre). Those two, and Carlos Sastre, got a distance in GC to the remaining favourites. Nibali and Basso lost a lot of time in the first mountain stages, without falling, without mechanial problems. The Giro became definitely more interesting than expected!
After the first series of mountain stages Carlos Sastre finally attacked in stage 17, where the pack crosses a mountain first, and some hills in the last quarter of the stage. He gained a minute on the group of favourites, a stage win, and the lead in the GC.
Scarponi and Di Luca, however, were still within a minute.
Sastre winning in Sondrio after 244km and taking the lead in GC
After that, there were two more hard mountain finishes, and a long time trial. Scarponi won both stages after creating small gaps on the finishing meters. Di Luca fell in a downhill, lost some minutes, but the third place wasn't in danger. Sastre lost the mountain stages, and when it came to the final time trial he couldn't gain time on Scarponi. A bit sad after he wore the leaders jersey already, but still a great 2nd place in the overall.
This all wouldn't have been possible without the great support of Duarte and Blanco, who kept Sastre out of the wind most of the time, and brought a lot of damage to other riders. Colli had to give up halfway during the race, Corti stepped off the bike after the final flat stage.

56 riders did not finish
This performance also brought us the wild card for 2011's Tour de France. We will prepare for the Tour in Slovenia (GP Kranj, Tour of Slovenie), Italy (Memorial Marco Pantani) and Switzerland (GP du canton d'Argovie, Tour de Suisse), and show ourselves at our national championships.
The team for the Tour will probably consist of Cobo, Ardila, Wyss, Valls, De la Fuente, Duran, Florencio and Pelucchi - and me. Without strong sprinters in our team it's obvious that we will go for the overall.
Impressive that Sastre was able to get 2nd, and even more amazing is that he was only 50 seconds back. At 36 years old, Grand Tour Podiums are hard to come by. Unless you happen to be Lance Armstrong.

That was just one of the points I liked about this Giro. It's not just Sastre:
