I'd say it's just a show for the media. It's the same as the crap Contador spouted about producing his "best numbers ever" in training just before the Tour. Nothing but excuses for declining.
He should be happy with a top 10 at the Vuelta. Most of the climbs favour riders who like stop-start racing - which is the exact opposite of how Basso rides.

Same goes for Evans who thought he could get a podium spot. |

EBH will likely recover in time for Vuelta.
He won't be in top shape in 1st week, but will be hoping to hit good form in last week or so. He'll have a free role in targeting stage wins, especially going into breaks. Could well get few stage wins, which should be very good for him, but who knows what shape he'll have.
Decided to quote this since its somewhat Sky related

I'm more interested in seeing how Boswell will do! I think he may catch a lot of people off guard as a mountain domestique here.
Boswell is not riding Vuelta, but USA Pro Cycling Challenge where he and Dombrowski will be likely the leaders, supported by Froome and Co.
It's a good thing in my eyes Sky decided against a GT for both of them this season, too early, and they already played part in biggest WT races.
Next year expect them to play bigger roles, in terms of results for sure.

Well then ProCycling Stats needs to update the startlists

Thats what lead me to believe he was riding.

If so it should be good for Ulissi then. Also if Scarponi rides he could do very good. |

Well I think we all know that Evans only manage to stay in the podium at Giro because one Mountain Stage was canceled otherwise he would have finished behind Scarponi and maybe behind Betancur but this in not gonna happend in Vuelta (i mean a Mountain Stage canceled because of bad weather). Basso should be really happy if he manage to stay in the top 10. I can see Valverde, Henao, Nieve, Pinot, Mollema, Ten Dam, Pozzovivo, Betancur, Scarponi, Majka, Kreuziger, Nibali and Rodriguez doing better than him so even a top 10 shouldnt be a piece of cake. |

Nieve will work for Samy,Kreuziger will go for stages win and riders like Pozzovivo,Ten Dam aren't really consistent.Imo Scarponi isn't better than Basso. Also Pinot still suffer from his throat infection.Mollema will come after TdF and probably he will be exhausted.
With a bit ok luck Basso can top 5.
ps: Sorry for my bad english...

Given Garmin's squad and the course as well as the fact he "quit" the last few stages and didn't exert himself fully at the Tour, I think he's still going for GC.

Vaughters has said multiple times Martin doesn't have the recovery to go for a good GC in a GT.
I suppose he's going to prepare the WC.

Well if any course suits him I think this one might, given the Ardennes. Although I expect him to fade. He already peaked for the Ardennes, and his Tour peak ran dry at the end.

Carlos Betancur will ride the Vuelta. I hope to see him doing top 10 at least. I think Pozzovivo will be the AG2R leader. |

Vuelta is even more suited to him than Giro was. Betancur can podium this one with bits of good luck on his side, he's better than Pozzovivo for sure, they would be mad if they were going for him, dual leadership at beginning and then which one is better becomes the leader I guess, although it will be Betancur.

Giro favored Pozzovivo more than the Vuelta does. TBH Pozzovivo lost leadership when he joined Ag2r
