Gunman takes hostages in Sydney cafe
At least one gunman has taken several people hostage at a cafe in the Australian city of Sydney.
Pictures on Australian television show at least three people with their hands up against a window, and a black flag with Arabic writing.
Hundreds of armed police have sealed off Martin Place in Sydney's central business district.
New South Wales police have asked people to avoid the area.
An Australian Broadcasting Corporation reporter said that gunfire had been heard at the scene - but this has not been confirmed.
Major landmarks in the city such as the Sydney Opera House have been evacuated. |

Jesus.
Just terrible what happened in Paris today. Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine was the victim of extreme violence. Organised terrorism, actually.
I think 11 dead, more injured. Journalists, cartoonists and cops shot to death with Kalasjnikovs. The murderers were definitely extremists. Once again innocent lives have to suffer, and for what?
So to show my support to all the victims and their families:

Of course what happened is terrible, no justification.
But I have to say that I really dislike this magazine. Some things they do are -in my opinion- politically incorrect.

I am no particular fan of the magazine, myself. But when people get shot just for their words and their drawings, I don't care how politically incorrect they were In the end they're just human beings, and they have been shot like dogs. Freedom of speech with a bullet in it |

Yet another religious crime. You'd think that in this day and age people would know better.
I guess we can only dream of a future where pointless crimes such as these ones will no longer occur.

I feel this guy should have every right to publish politically incorrect material, but from a personal standpoint it is just stupid. Completely agree with sutty, at any point when you do something like this you are putting yourself at risk (and possibly others). It's important not to draw too much from these incidents though, is there anything that can be done to stop terrorist attacks? No way..
Unfortunately this is a problem for all modern-day western "sphere" countries, with multiculturalism and blah blah etc. There's only
a) Decrease sphere of military control (not going to happen), or
b) Decrease personal liberties
As you may well know from history this is all too common a trend

Everything needs to be possible to get ridiculed, no matter how touchy or controversial, without any repercussions. Feel insulted? So be it. You can ignore it or you can try to rebut it, maybe even draw a counter-cartoon yourself. But it may never be a justification for violence. Stating things like "they had it coming" or "it's the risk of the job" or "they went too far" is on the same level as blaming rape victims of dressing too sexy imo.

Yes it can happen, but the chance you're involved is very, very small. Do not give in to the fear, as it's the terrorist's strongest weapon.

No one justifies violence. So what? You can't deny the risk of things like this. And it's not like I would find a cartoon of ISIS beheading Muhammad funny anyway

I cant agree less here. This is not wearing sexy dress, this is like having a note "I bet you cant rape me with your little d*ck" on that dress. Or walking into Harlem with sign "I hate all niggas, hail the KKK ".
No one deserves to be shot (well, certainly not these people), but what makes you think that terrorists will feel to oblige our rules? These people believe that defamation (or even picturing) of their prophet is the biggest crime, punishable only by death. So is it wise (and right) to laugh in faces of these people?
Majority here knows what i think about religion. As i see it, both God and Muhhamad can go f*ck themselves. But at same point i know i would not say that to islamic extremist, or i would need to face the consequences.
Speaking about justice here is off in my eyes. There is no justice in our world anyway, so why search for one in situation where it cant be. I am a realist and what i see here is rather physics law, law of action and reaction.

Problem with this is, if you decide to tone down personal liberties etc, you let them win.
Everyone should post these cartoons now, to show the rest of us stand united. If we'd be apologetic and say: "sorry terrorists, we won't do it anymore!" then they'd win.
It's the dumbest thing around that religion is some sort of untouchable topic. Why would a religion be free of criticism? It's just a theory like another, it shouldn't be free of any criticism and satire.
Of course, those extremists are just as much muslims as me. They're just murderers with beards and they think they're muslims, but they're not. Really not. |

I would say that offending someone for his believes in nationwide press is not a liberty, but stupidity and i am not sure if it should be protected and be viable in our society. I can and i am doing it on cycling internet forum, but that is hardly a comparable platform.
This is last "work" of killed head of the magazine, Stéphane Charbonnier, who was btw. big supporter of communism ideology, ideology that killed tenths of millions of people and this person dares to laugh on anoter ideology in this manner?

Absolutely agree, the only Muslim in NZ who supports Muslims terrorist publicly has been given a big-time cold shoulder about it, even from his wife. You are 100% right, Extremist aren't Muslims. And if Allah did exist, what would he think?
What the newspaper said wasn't good, but now, that doesn't matter. It doesn't matter of the guys supported communism, or were anti-Muslim. They got murdered. And what right do these people have, even in a savage world where you can murder with a reason, let's say. They probably aren't overly anti-communist probably, like they would set up an orginiazation or join one. And they aren't Muslims. No motive, they have the wrong end of the stick and that would be to understate monumentally. Even to attack the building they work in would be having the wrong end of the stick. Many French people in that area probably oppose what they are saying despite not being Muslim or anything. You don't see them attacking the newspaper and human beings.
Okay, rant over, though I have more to say I don't think you want a very angry essay.
