Was expected with everyone on a weaker form.

Vuelta ciclista al Pais Vasco: Stage 2

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo544.jpg

The fifth stage in Pais Vasco is again hilly. Three harder hills halfway before a short bump in the last 5 kms that can be used to get away and stay away. We will definatly try something in a break today.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo545.jpg

A lot of breaks early on, including this 14 men strong group with names like Kolobnev (Katusha), Arashiro (Europcar) and Marcato (Vacansoleil). They could never create a decent gap though and would get caught right before the first hill.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo546.jpg

That was the sign for Kreuziger to attack. He went strong and immediately created a gap of over 1'. It couldn't be though as he had a flat tire and was caught again not much later.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo547.jpg

The bad luck didn't stop Kreuziger though as he attacked again and could create a good gap. He was leading the peloton with more than 3' 30 kms before the finish when disaster striked again. The rain made the roads very slippery and he crashed.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo548.jpg

It was impossible for him to recover again and he was caught by 3 men on the final categorised hill. Sanchez, Anton and Rodriguez attacked to him and all Kreuziger could do was try to follow them.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo549.jpg

They would stand no chance as Radioshack brought everything back together on the flatter part. This means that the stage will be decided over the final hill.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo550.jpg

Anton made another strong attack on the hill nobody could match. He takes another win and takes some more seconds on his opponents. Rodriguez tried to follow Anton and could also create a small gap to the others to finish 2nd.

How many bad luck can you have? Kreuziger was feeling very strong today and went on the attack. A flat tire and a crash made it impossible to get a win. Such a shame.

Vuelta ciclista al Pais Vasco: Stage 6

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo551.jpg

The Vuelta al Pais Vasco ends with a flat timetrial. We don't have anyone who still competes here so we can just watch the fight for the stage win.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo552.jpg

Norwegian champion Boasson Hagen put in a very strong time quite early. Let's see if it's enough to stay in the lead untill the end.
24'20
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo553.jpg

World Champion Tony Martin is ofcourse the big favourite for the win today. He doesn't dissapoint and betters Hagen's time with 24 seconds
23'56
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo554.jpg

Bradley Wiggins is probably the only remaining rider who can beat Martin. He does his best and goes faster as his teammate Hagen but is still clearly slower than the world champion
24'19
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo555.jpg

Sanchez has worked for his teammate Anton all week. He can go for himself today and can use the hills to beat the better timetrialers. He rides a strong time but can't beat the best today.
24'21
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo556.jpg

Igor Anton holds more than a minute lead over Schleck in the GC so doesn't have to fear anything today. He takes it rather easy but defends his overal lead.

Well, not the best race for us. But that was expected as the form was not great. We tried, especially yesterday but couldn't compete.

The Hell of the North is probably the toughest of all the classics. 60 kms of cobbles through the North of France finishing on the famous velodrome in Roubaix. Topfavourites are ofcourse Boonen and Cancellara who are probably the best cobblers. Nuyens should compete for a very good result and we will be very happy if he finishes better as his 7th place in the Ronde last week.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo559.jpg

The start of the race was really boring. Passing the most feared cobbled section of the whole race and everything is still together. 171 riders remaining in the peloton after the Trouee d'Arenberg is probably a record.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo560.jpg

45 kms to go and the pace is still very low. That is the sign for our team to try something so we put Kroon at the front of the race to up the pace in the pack.

It takes untill la carrefour de l'arbre untill something intresting happens. Tom Boonen attacks and starts the race! No immediate reaction from any other favourite.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo562.jpg

5 riders join him after the next cobbled section. The 6 men leading group with Boonen, Cancellara, Chavanel, Boom, Ballan and Flecha is caught again though by the rest of the favourites. The race has finally started though.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo563.jpg

A new attack by Boonen was immediately countered by Cancellara this time. They quickly create a gap to the others and it seems like this duo will fight eachother for the win here.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo564.jpg

Three riders are riding behind them. Flecha, Ballan and Chavanel form the next group. Ballan can take it easy as his teammate Hushovd is not far behind trying to come back. He can't come much closer though fighting alone against 2.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo565.jpg

The next group is much bigger. Nuyens leads the 12 men group wich includes all other favourites like Hausler, Boom, Breschel and Leukemans. They are not much behind Hushovd so still stand a chance to fight for a podium.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo566.jpg

Boonen attacked again over the last cobbled section when entering Roubaix and he holds a good advantage over Cancellara when entering the mythical Velodrome.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo567.jpg

So it's Tom Boonen who takes his 4th win in Roubaix. Just like in the Ronde, he is now record holder together with Monsieur Paris-Roubaix Roger de Vlaeminck.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo568.jpg

Chavanel wins the sprint agains Flecha and Ballan for the last podium spot. Great day for Quick-Step with two riders on the podium. Hushovd could never close the gap on this group and still has to fight for the 6th place.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo569.jpg

Unlucky for him but lucky for us, he loses that 6th place to a very strong finishing Nuyens. He still had a lot of energy left in the end and sprinted away from his companions past Hushovd to take 6th.

Well, Nuyens finished behind guys who are all better as him so we can't be disappointed though. He might even have had the strength to follow the trio in front of him but we can be happy with 6th.

Amstel Gold Race

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo571_zps542c1dd3.jpg

The Amstel Gold Race is the first of 3 hilly classics in one week. Called the Ardennes Classsics, this race is held in Holland but not far of Liege. The finish is up the Cauberg, a famous hill. Topfavourites are Rodriguez and Gilbert. They look to become top favourites for the WC, which is also held here.l We hope for a top 156 with either Kreuziger or Nuyens.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo572_zps8ef284c9.jpg

The race starts with an early break of 8. Zabriskie (Garmin), Rubiano (Androni), Gazvoda (AG2R), Masciarelli (Acqua e Sapone), Weening (Orica), Gretsch (Argos), Moreno (Movistar) and Vorganov (Katusha) are all good riders but should pose no threat for the win here.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo573_zpsd90fc1b8.jpg

130 kms to go and Devolder (Vacansoleil), Wegmann (Garmin) and Nuyens (Saxo Bank) go in the attack. The gap to the breakaway is only 3' so it doesn't look like a bad move.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo574_zpsa49ef036.jpg

They close the gap to the breakaway in no time but the favourites feel like Nuyens, Devolder and Wegmann are too dangerous and everything is brought back together.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo575_zps391cd9b7.jpg

5 new riders try their luck in an attack. Casar (FdJ), Flecha (Sky), Albasini (GreenEdge), Pineau (Quick-Step) and Lastras (Movistar) are all very smart, experienced riders so it's not very smart to not have one rider in here.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo576_zps3ec730fc.jpg

They start creating a gap and it keeps on growing untill 70 kms to go. Radioshack starts chasing cause the 5 are now more than 6 minutes in front of the peloton.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo577_zpsf49728e7.jpg

20 kms to go and Gilbert is the first favourite to put in a dig. Rodriguez and Cunego jump on his wheel and this trio gets clear of the others. They are still more than 2' behind the leaders though.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo578_zps5f9c0477.jpg

Leaders? One guy is now alone in front. Flecha rode away from the 4 others and sets off alone hoping to do what he couldn't on the cobbles, win a big race.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo579_zpsf8718004.jpg

Gilbert rode away from Cunego and Rodriguez and these two are now back in a bigger group. Menchov (Katusha), Schleck (Radioshack), Tsschop (BMC), Sagan (Liquigas) and Vanendert (Lotto) are the others.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo580_zpsb619e8c3.jpg

Kreuziger couldn't follow these strong men and is in the next group along with Leukemans (Vacansoleil), Anton (Euskaltel), Langeveld (GreenEdge) and some others.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo581_zps87bf2002.jpg

Going over the penultimate hill and everything clears up. Flecha is in front with Gilbert alone behind him chasing. Cunego, Vanendert, Sagan and Rodriguez attack away from their group past the remainings of the break where Albasini finds the powers to follow.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo582_zpscd6383ce.jpg

Starting the Cauberg and Flecha still is in front of Gilbert. The Belgian champion is 25" behind. Can Flecha hold on to take the win or will he finish on the podium once again?
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo583_zps256e0ed9.jpg

It was not enough for Flecha as Gilbert joined him immediately and left him behind not much later. Nice win for Gilbert, he is becoming the King of the Cauberg.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo584_zpsa59a6539.jpg

Flecha still lost much to Gilbert but can just hold off Cunego and Rodriguez to take a well deserved 2nd place after such a great attack. Kreuziger crosses the line in 21th.

Not the greatest race for our team. Nuyens tried it in an attack but was brought back. Kreuziger never had the power to follow the best.

Miguel98
I think the poor form from Kreuziger kinda ruin the race.

nice ride from nuyens! shame about kreuziger

The Fleche Wallone is another hilly top classic. The route isn't that hard but the hills are longer as in the Gold Race and the finish today lays atop the dreaded Mur de Huy. Kreuziger is currently riding in Trentino so we have no goal but to attack.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo587_zps3bdd8c32.jpg

60 kms to go and 3 riders are in front. Roux (FdJ), Boasson Hagen (Sky) and Horner (Radioshack) are strong riders, especially the last two.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo588_zps46987e76.jpg

They are chased by six others. Paulinho, Nuyens (Saxo Bank), Keldermann (Rabobank), Gautier (Europcar), Gasparotto (Astana), Goris (Accent) and Larsson (Vacansoleil). Paulinho is working hard to close the gap to the 3 leaders.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo589_zps8ad5d600.jpg

30 kms to go. Gasparotto and Nuyens have dropped their companions over some hills and join the 3 early escapees to form a very strong breakaway group. The pack is still over 3 minutes behind.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo590_zps6950f546.jpg

Uran, followed by Vanendert, Sanchez, Cunego, Sagan and Schleck start the attacks from the favourites with less than 10 km to go. They will come too late though as the leading 5 are still more than 2' in front.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo591_zpsbb077e5d.jpg

Horner used a small bump to get away from his companions. He starts the final Mur de Huy with a small gap over his opponents. Nuyens only goal is to keep his top 5 position as he is already totally empty.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo592_zps231f719f.jpg

It looked like Horner's attack was timed perfectly but he lost all his speed with 500 metres to go. Boasson Hagen and Gasparotto easily caught up with him and the latter was just a bit stronger to take a nice win.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo593_zps4aba8a6f.jpg

Nuyens had to give everything he had untill the finish line cause Sanchez rode a very strong Mur and only crossed the finish line centimetres after him. Great effort by him.

Great work by Nuyens. Strong performance also by Paulinho who worked very hard for his leader to bring them back to the trio. Nuyens didn't have any energy left but we can't be mad about that as he was with some very strong punchers.

Good 5th place. Forgets the poor performance in the Amstel Gold Race. Smile

The Giro del Trentino is a 4 day stage race. It's seen as the best preparation for next month's Giro d'Italia. The route is mountainous so Kreuziger should compete. He is still preparing though and is probably not ready to win.

Not a great race by the team but it is a preparation race so that's no problem.

La Doyenne is the oldest of the Monuments. The hilly parcours towards Liege favours the best puncheurs in the peloton. Gilbert is ofcourse the topfavourite around the region were he grew up. Our man Kreuziger should be in form to get us a top 10.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo605_zps230ff7bd.jpg

6 riders from the early break. Their names are Carrara (Vacansoleil), Ghyselinck (Cofidis), Verdugo (Euskaltel), Vaugrenard (FdJ), Santambrogio (BMC) and Ulissi (Lampre).
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo606_zps1f44cf1c.jpg

The chase in the peloton is organised by 1 or 2 riders from all teams with a favourite. They easily bring back the escapees as there were no other attacks from semi favourites.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo607_zps72fd587f.jpg

Simon Gerrans (GreenEdge) starts the fireworks with around 30 kms to go. He feels strong and attacks, immediately followed by the BMC duo Gilbert and Evans.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo608_zps732c14a1.jpg

Even though there are 2 teammates, the trio doesn't cooperate very well and are brought back in the pack on the next hill. Their day is certainly not over yet.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo609_zps9e23e7db.jpg

A big split occurs on the next hill and with 15 kms to go we have a leading group including 13 favourites. All big names are at the front. Unlucky for us, Kreuziger was badly placed and can't comeback alone.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo610_zpsdd0b231c.jpg

Going over the Saint-Nicolas, the most important climb on the course with only 5 km to go, and Samual Sanchez has created a decent gap. Only the small hill towards Ans remaing so it doesn't look bad for him.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo611_zpse8e80eec.jpg

Sanchez lost some time in the descent and 4 riders are closing in on him. Gilbert is almost in his wheel while Vanendert, Evans and Vinokourov have to give everything to stay in the wheel from the Belgian champion. It looks like the sprint between Gilbert and Sanchez will be decisive.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo612_zps75b79429.jpg

Gilbert had some energy left and, supported by the home crowd, passed Sanchez to take the win. Evans makes it a great day for the team taking third. Kreuziger finishes as 14th, showing he could have done better if he hadn't missed the split.

The Tour de Romandie is a 6 day stage race in the Romandie region in Switzerland. Held at the end of April, it is generally seen as a good preparation for the Giro. Our team is fully here to prepare next month's GT so we don't have any expecations.

Astana's Ukrainian Grivko is known for his prologues and sets a very good time early.

Decent results from Nuyens. And Kreuziger... with a fitness below 90, a top 10 is almost impossible in LBL.

Tour de Romandie: Stage 2

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo618_zps65417af4.jpg

The second stage in Romandie is over hilly terrain but it's probably more something for a breakaway than for the favourites.

i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo619_zpseb9340c7.jpg

A break of 14 got away early. The most important names at the front are Trentin (Omega Pharma), Meyer (GreenEdge), Txurruka (Euskaltel) and Paterski (Liquigas).
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo620_zpsefa668b4.jpg

Pires feels strong and uses the longer hill in the middle of the stage to get away from the pack and join the breakaway upfront. The same would be done not much later by Florencio (Katusha).
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo621_zps0af9c6ef.jpg

The chase in the pack was organised by Movistar and Lampre. They worked hard but still had to come up strong cause they were still 3' behind with 30 kms to go.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo622_zps51b9ecdf.jpg

The break would not succeed though as they were joined by Cunego, Vanendert, Boasson Hagen and Albasini after some attacks on the last hill on the route.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo623_zps0a3ae448.jpg

These 4 passed the breakaway and would decide in a sprint who would take the win. Albasini is in the worst position leading out the others. Should normally be a piece of cake for Hagen.
i1199.photobucket.com/albums/aa477/Spilak23/saxo624_zps40850d37.jpg

But suprise at the finish as Cunego jumped around Boasson Hagen in the last 500 metres and beats the leader in a straigt flat sprint. Hagen stays the leader though.
