Thanks Alakagon
@AndySchleck
Summary of April
Lots of races for Garmin in this months, some with nice some with less nice results.
Of course Cancellara with the award winning The Ronde and Paris Roubaix.
Kritskiy with the 2nd youth award this season after winning the prologue in the Romandie Tour.
Rankings
Pro Tour
Tony Martin leading with just 1 point ahead of Cancellara. But the first GT might mix this ranking a lot. Haussler as 11th just outside the top10.
Continental
Sicard leading with a quite comfortable advance and so also his Europcar team is first in the team ranking.
CQ
Europcar and Saxobank would join Pro Tour at the moment followed by NetApp. But with that many races left, it`s too early for a forecast.
March schedule
Just 3 races in May, but nevertheless we will ride all over the months with almost two squads at the same time.
Martin, Stetina and Farrar are our riders for the Giro, where our sponsor wants the overall win. But hopefully he is happy with a top5 and the sprinter jersey, too.
Sanchez and Goss will lead us in California although there is a big question mark about their fitness level after a longer race break.
Fuglsang and Rojas will go for stage and overall wins in Bayern.
Next coming a big Giro presentation. I can promise you a very strong startlist. |

The Giro d`Italia is the first GT in the cycling season. It`s held in May over 3 weeks. The first Giro d'Italia started on May 13, 1909 at Milan. It`S the second most famous cycling stage race next to the Tour de France. As in other GT`s the Giro has stages for sprinters, timetrial specialists, breakaways and climbers. But actually most Giros have lots of hard and spectacular mountain stages, so it can be won by pure climbers "easier" than the Tour, where you also should be a great timetrialist.
3 riders were able to win the Giro 5 times: Alfredo Binda, Fausto Coppi and Eddy Merckx. An incredibly number of 42 stage wins were won by Mario Cippollini and so he leads this statistic. Another great record are Petacchi`s 9 victories in one Giro or Nibali`s 10 in the last year, where he took the overall, mountain and sprint ranking in a very dominant way.
Result in 2011
1 | Vincenzo Nibali | Liquigas-Doimo | 2 | Michele Scarponi | Androni Giocattoli - Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni | 3 | Ivan Basso | Lampre-Farnese Vini | 4 | Tejay Van Garderen | Team HTC - Columbia | 5 | Domenico Pozzovivo | Colnago - CSF Inox | 6 | Vladimir Efimkin | Ag2r La Mondiale | 7 | Christophe Le Mével | FDJ | 8 | Daniel Martin | Garmin - Transitions | 9 | Bauke Mollema | Colnago - CSF Inox | 10 | Cadel Evans | Team Katusha |
Although we missed a stage win we had a nice Giro with Martin and Hunter. Unfortunately Martin was injured for one day and so he missed the chance for a better result.
The closest fight was between Scarponi and Basso. They changed their positions a few times. But also Le Mevel and Martin had nice duels in the last week, where the French improved a lot.
Route in 2012
A very big thanks to Pellizotti for his Giro variant. I haven`t played it yet, but it looked very good and realistic in the stage viewer. I am quite sure, that I will enjoy it.
Only change is, that his 2nd long flat time trial is now a mountain time trial. This was necessary as I planned the season with another variant including a mountain time trial but not the nicest stages.
Garmin squad in 2012
Martin and Stetina improved a lot after the last year. (Comparison on page 16 of this story). So we are aiming for a top 5 with Martin, what will be very difficult and the Youth jersey with Stetina.
Farrar will try to win the points jersey the 2nd time after 2010.
With Pate, Felline, Peterson, Boom and Bobridge we should be prepared for this race.
For Dao it`s his first GT and so he has to learn of course.

Favourites
Overall
Vincenzo Nibali is again the biggest favourite although he changed the teams and rides for Lampre now. He is the strongest climber here and also an average time trialist. Plus the best team by far.
Funnily the two biggest contenders are his team mates
Ivan Basso, also a former Liquigas rider, is still a great climber and might be the biggest "opponent".
The 2nd one is Damiano Cunego. He won the Giro in 2010 ahead of Ricco and no other rider had chances to beat these duo. With a similar form he could repeat this. He is also extra motivated as he wasn`t nominated to any GT in 2011 with Basso as GT leader.
Michele Scarponi rides for Quickstep now. But he might be the first, who can beat the Lampre trio. He also has some nice helpers in the hard mountains.
He is a big question mark. Riccardo Ricco isn`t riding in the biggest races since he was transfered to Skil-Shimano. But with Serpa he has a nice backup and maybe he can get a podium again as in 2010.
Janez Brajkovic might be the best time trialist of all favourites but therefore he is a bit worse in climbing. It will be interesting to see how he can perform.
***** Nibali
**** Basso, Scarponi
*** Cunego, Brajkovic, Ricco
** Soler, Monfort, Karpets, Martin
* Rogers, Rujano, V.Efimkin, Pozzovivo, Masciarelli
Sprints
Mark Cavendish could dominate every sprint here with a good fitness. He is just the best at the moment.
Sorry but had to take this picture
Bennati showed some great results so far and as Italian he should be extra motivated. He is also a better puncheur than most other big sprinters.
Tyler Farrar won the jersey in 2010 with just 1 stage win. Thsi is his big goal again plus maybe more than one win.
Napolitano is one of the fastest but therefore he has a lack in climbing.
Same for Hutarovich. On a flat course he could win but the smalles hill on the last third would bring him into troubles.
Sacha Modolo had some nice results in the last Giro. He is expected to be a top5 rider in several flat stages.
***** Cavendish
**** Bennati, Farrar
*** Napolitano, Hutarovich, Modolo
** Boasson Hagen, Gavazzi, Ventoso, McEwen
* Rasmussen, Bazayev, Gatto, Cardoso, Weylandt
It`s not necessarily the winner of the sprint jersey as also the overall riders will get many points. It`s just an overview for the flat stages,
U25
*** Merino
** Kruijswijk, Stetina
* Boasson Hagen, Gautier, Malacarne
Mountain is always hard to say as you never know who is going for the points. But probably it`s the overall winner. |

Giro d'Italia - Stage 1
San Remo prologue
We start with a short 6km prologue. The last 2,5km are always a bit uphill, so the GC contenders might show something today, even if they aren`t the biggest time trial specialists.
For us Farrar and Boom might be big favourites or at least they would on a totally flat prologue.
Damiano Cunego is on the road very early. Quite a good time for him.
10'57
Also the Italian time trial champion Ivan Basso earlier than most favourites. Same time than his team mate, although he is the better time trialist.
10'57
Dan Martin is the last Garmin rider. Bobridge with a great time and also Stetina did very well. Therefore Farrar and Boom with just average results.
The Irish isn`t losing too much but with his extremely lack of time trial skills this was the maximum.
11'08
Scarponi beats all earlier times and takes the lead. This was quite surprising actually. His form must be brilliant.
10'46
Also Janez Brajkovic can`t beat this time.
10'56
Maxime Monfort is definitely a top10 contender here but will he perform as good as Van Garderen in 2011?
10'55
Riccardo Ricco is also not known as a specialist. 1s slower than Martin.
11'09
Karpets is quite similar to Monfort actually. But his time isn`t that good today.
11'06
Soler is one of the best climbers here and so we will see him a lot in the mountains. Therefore he is the worst of all in time trials but today he had a good ride.
11'01
Nibali as last of all riders. He takes the 6th behind Jack Bobridge!!!
10'54

Nice result for Bobridge, and good to see that Martin managed to limit the losses. However, shouldn't Ricco have 11'09" (instead of 10'09" in the post), if he's 1s slower than Martin? |

Thanks.
Giro d'Italia - Stage 2
Ventimiglia - Acqui Terme
First real stage is a quiet flat one. Just a hill 40km to the line could annoy some sprinters. Hopefully Farrar can do well today. It`s a first sign, which sprinters are in a good form and which not.
A big break on the very first stage. These riders might regret it later in the 3 weeks.
Tomei (Farnese), Clarke (Sky), Valentin (FDJ), Kluge (NetApp), Bertolini (Androni), Houanard (Skil), Corti (Geox), Jørgensen (Leopard), Etxegibel (Euskaltel) and Lequatre (RadioShack).
Quickstep is doing the pace for Scarponi. 7 riders in the lead. Just Cataldo has a free role obviously next to their leader.
Nevertheless Jos Van Emden (Rabobank) attacks with 80km to go but no chance of course.
Tomei wins the mountain sprint and will be the first in the KoM jersey tomorrow.
Farrar was looking quite good with 15km to go but then the pace was just too fast for him. He couldn`t follow Cav`s wheel and felt back.
Just Bazayev and NApolitano were able to stay with him but not even thinking to overtake him.
Boom as 7th and Farrar as 10th ahead of several other sprinters with still a good result.
This sprint was definitely quite weird.

Yeah, even with Farrar having some problems, it was still a good stage, with 2 in the Top 10.
Unfortunately Cav has shown he is indeed in a great form. If he passes the mountains inside time limits, it will be much difficult to beat him on the points jersey.

Nice Top 10's but Farrar has to improve to fight for points jersey. Great prolgue
In PCM.Daily BB both Farrar and Cav has 66 in hills, but I think it was diffrent in ASO DB though.
