Vuelta al Pais Vasco - Stage 1
Hondarribia - Hondarribia
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-1-1.jpg
This variant start with a short stage. The biggest difficulty is the climb on the last third. It`s actually harder than it looks because of the short distance it looks less steep than it is.
We might already see some of the possible favourites struggling today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-1-2.jpg
The first kilometers were incredibly fast. One reason might be that there are some prominent riders in todays group.
Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel), Kiserlovski (Skil) and Rujano (Farnese) are the most famous. This is a strange move by Euskaltel sending their top favourite into a group on day 1 but maybe Anton feels very strong and will lead the team.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-1-3.jpg
When the peloton calmed down Garmin took the control. Meyer, Löw and Rowe were taking care of the group. With 60km the advance was at 3min and melting.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-1-4.jpg
45km to the finish line the next attack. Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), Vanendert (Omega) and Hermans (Shack) this time. All of them aren`t top favourites but still good for some nice results. So they are definitely dangerous.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-1-5.jpg
Unfortunately it took quite long until Astana supported us in doing the pace and so Rodriguez and Vanendert are still leading the race with 90s on top of the climb.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-1-6.jpg
All attacks on the climb weren`t successful. Especially Luis Leon Sanchez rode very strong and caught several riders up- and downhill. Unfortunately all his helpers felt back quite early and so he had to do the work alone.
Most attacking riders were F.Schleck, Lövkvist, Roche, Moreno, Cobo Acebo, Kirchen, Gesink and Vaugrenard.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-1-7.jpg
After doing lots of pace on the downhill section Sanchez was still fit enough to attack on the last 3 flat km. He creates a small gap but this won`T be enough for a time bonus.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-1-8.jpg
Vanendert wins the sprint against Rodriguez. Together they gained 50s on the favourite group, which melted onto 40 riders.

Biggest disappointment were the Basques from Euskaltel and RadioShack. None of the Basques were in this group and just Hermans didn`t lose time. Sanchez lost +1'40 and arrived together with other favourites like Sagan or Coppel. Anton even lost 4'51 today.
But also Ricco, Martens, Kolobnev (+2'37), Brajkovic, Gerrans and Leipheimer (+3'06) can`t be happy.

As you said, climb is tougher than it looks like. Lots of favorites struggling... although some are probably simply out of form. After all, was LLS attack succesfull? Because there were about 20 riders in front of him coming after the winners.

baia
Not much time lost...still enought race to melt that time difference..

Thanks all.

On the attacking screenshot the two leaders are on the corner in the background. I hoped to reach them and wanted to try it. Unfortunately I was over sprinted by half of the group afterwards. So no time win or lose.

Vuelta al Pais Vasco - Stage 2
Hondarribia - Balmaseda
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-2-1.jpg
With several steep hills and a long distance this is the queen`s stage. Hopefully Sanchez can show some more great performance today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-2-2.jpg
~12 riders in the break but already on the first mountains there is a selection. Igor Anton (Euskaltel) is the strongest. But after yesterdays stage he lost several minutes and is not in top form. With Moerenhout (Rabobank), Kump (Liquigas) and Ignatiev (Katusha) there are more good riders in this group.
But none of them is better than +3'07.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-2-3.jpg
Astana for Frank Schleck, Movistar for Cobo Acebo and Omega for Lövkvist are doing the pace. Behind them LL Sanchez is very concentrated to avoid any kind of surprises.

Unfortunately Cameron Meyer just crashed, but he will come back into the peloton without any injury.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-2-4.jpg
50km to go and the highest mountains are passed. Surprisingly it`s Löw, who stays with Sanchez, while Kreder, Lowe and Pate already struggled.
Most surprising as Löw was helping Kreder for a long time in the beginning.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-2-5.jpg
The break splitted more and more and now just the 4 mentioned riders there. Behind them the peloton is coming closer but it will be an close fight between these groups.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-2-6.jpg
With 28km to go another crash. Any yes. It`s Luis Leon Sanchez in the deciding race situation. Next to him also Seeldreeyers and Roche on the asphalt.
For some reason Roche stood up very quickly and found contact to the group again, while Sanchez had to fight alone with some minutes back.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/Pais-2-7.jpg
Cobo Acebo wins this stage. He attacked on the last climb and saved some seconds on the flat part. The Schleck brothers coming next and also gaining some time today. Nicolas Roche even finished in the top10 after his crash. Strange, why Sanchez wasn`t able to find contact again.

LL Sanchez did an amazing job behind getting rid of Seeldreyers (+1'30 to him, also not injured) and overtook several other good riders but in the end he also lost more than 4 minutes. A very bad day for our team. This might already be the dream of a good result. But now he might have a chance to attack on another stage.
At least he isn`t injured. Therefore Rowe felt out of the time limit as some other riders, too.

Thanks for the comments. Indeed very annoying. Boom in RVV, Meyer and Sanchez on this stage. Hopefully this was enough for this months now.
Luckily none of these 3 is injured at all.

I also thought about an attack. The next stage might be quite hard for that but maybe a mid stage attack on the 4th could work out.
Also the final ITT might bring him back a few places.

The Flanders Classics cycling race which starts in Antwerp and finishes in Schoten is a sprinters classic. It`s one 155km circuit around Antwerpen and 3 short circuits in Schoten, where the race will be decided in general. Record champion with 3 wins is Piet Oellibrandt (Bel).

Unfortunately Farrar was blocked in the end and so his lead out Maaskant was our best rider. Felline showed his talent and since then we wanted to sign him. Luckily this worked out at the end of last season.

Haussler and Maaskant will lead our team here. Also farrar could be a possible leader but his form is not that good. Vansummeren, Felline and Boom could also get nice results but depending on the race situation they might have to work for the team.

Favourites

*** Haussler
** Farrar, Boasson Hagen
* Bonnet, Traksel, Cavendish

Although the start list is weaker than expected there are some nice names. The biggest favourites are from our team and last years winner Boasson Hagen. But with a good form and a bit luck on the very few cobbled parts Cavendish is always a danger.
Riders like Boom, Maaskant, Vansummeren, Terpstra or Vanmarcke might have to attack to have best chances.

Antwerpen - Schoten
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/SP-1.jpg
216 long, windy and a bit cobbled kilometers. It will be an interesting race.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/SP-2.jpg
6 riders in the break of the day.
Caruso (Katusha), Livramento (Topsport), Samoilau (Quickstep), Losada (Movistar), Stortoni (Androni) and Pinotti (FDJ).

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/SP-3.jpg
Fischer did the pace for a long time in the beginning. But when he stopped no other team did anything. So the advance was at 7min with just 55km to go.
Vansummeren, Boom, Felline and Fischer had to work now. So Farrar, Haussler and Maaskant our men for today.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/SP-4.jpg
27km to go on the final circuit. Due to our heavy pace the peloton splitted and just 28 riders left. 1'30 later the big peloton was never able to find contact again. All Garmin riders in this group.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/SP-5.jpg
The last cobbled section and Vansummeren makes the pace again.
The group is already been caught and now we expect a sprint finish.
We also had good luck with the daily form today. Maaskant, Farrar (+5), Haussler (+2). But Farrar won`t win here as he already struggled on the pavement.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/SP-6.jpg
The sprint starts soon and Boom has still enough energy to do the leadout for Maaskant and Haussler. Good position for our riders. But also Bonnet, Capelle and Terpstra in good positions.

i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/04%20April/SP-7.jpg
Haussler wins the sprint easily ahead of his team mate Maaskant and Sieberg. Both are celebrating this double. But also the next 5 Garmin riders finished in the top30. Great result for us and nice to win again after some weeks off.
Now we are really looking forward to Paris Roubaix.
